  • In accordance with low carbon and green growth paradigm, a subway is one of major public transit systems for resolving traffic congestion and decreasing traffic accidents. In addition, as subway networks expand, passengers' travel pattern in the subway network change and consequently affect the urban structure. Generally, new subway route has been planned and developed, mainly considering a travel demand forecast. However, it is desired to conduct an empirical analysis on the forecast model regarding change of travel accessibility and passenger demand pattern according to new subway line. Therefore, in this paper, an alternative method, developed based upon a spatial syntax model, is proposed for evaluating new subway route in terms of passenger's mobility and network accessibility. In a case study, we constructed subway network data, mainly targeting the no 9 subway line opened in 2009. With an axial-map analysis, we calculated spatial characteristics to describe topological movement interface. We then analyzed actual modal shift and change on demand of passengers through the number of subway passenger between subway stations and the number of passenger according to comparative bus line from Smart Card to validate suggested methods. Results show that the proposed method provides quantitative means of visualizing passenger flow in subway route planning and of analyzing the time-space characteristics of network. Also, it is expected that the proposed method can be utilized for predicting a passengers' pattern and its impact on public transportation.

  • Although numerous studies have analyzed the relationship between subway travel demand (STD) and various characteristics of subway catchment area (SCA), a few studies examined the relationship between STD and the structure of pedestrian networks within each SCA. Hence, this study evaluates the structure of pedestrian networks within 79 SCAs in the city of Busan using Space syntax and investigates the relationship between STD and several characteristics of SCA including the spatial structure of pedestrian network. The analysis results show that the spatial integration of pedestrian networks within the SCAs, which represents the magnitudes of walking accessibility to subway station, is positively associated with STD among the three spatial indexes such as integration, connectivity, and intelligibility. In addition, the results show that STD significantly increases as the number of travel gathering facilities and the average floor area ratio within the SCAs increase. This study ultimately corroborates that designing the grid pedestrian network and assigning the travel gathering facilities to the compact buildings within SCAs are needed to ameliorate the spatial structure of SCA in the city of Busan as transit-oriented development system.

  • Subways are eco-friendly public transportation that can transport large numbers of passengers safely and quickly. It is necessary to predict the accurate number of passengers in order to increase public interest in subway. This study groups stations on Lines 1 to 9 of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway using clustering analysis. We propose one final prediction model for all stations and three optimal prediction models for each cluster. We found three groups of stations out of 294 total subway stations. The Group 1 area is industrial and commercial, the Group 2 ares is residential and commercial, and the Group 3 area is residential districts. Various data mining techniques were conducted for each group, as well as driving some influential factors on demand prediction. We use our model to predict the number of passengers for 8 new stations which are part of the 3rd extension plan of Seoul metro line 9 opened in October 2018. The estimated average number of passengers per hour is from 241 to 452 and the estimated maximum number of passengers per hour is from 969 to 1515. We believe our analysis can help improve the efficiency of public transportation policy.

  • In this study, the effects of weather conditions such as rainfall, discomfort index, snowfall, and sensible temperature on public transport demand in Seoul were analyzed using statistical data. The reasons were also derived from the survey. The data for the analysis were collected over the weekdays and weekends, and seasonal data of summer and winter were also gathered separately. Rainfall amount, discomfort index, and sensible temperature except snowfall amount, whose samples were insufficient, decreased the public transport demand by 2-7%. Rainfall amount and sensible temperature were statistically significant. Correlation analysis also showed that rainfall amount and sensible temperature are highly correlated with the demand. To find the reasons, the survey was conducted on citizens living in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. About 30% of the respondents wished to give up using bus when rainfall was heavy or temperature was low. On the contrary, auto and subway users increased by 10%. The results of this study could be used as the basic data when the public transportation planning or operation related policies according to the weather condition are concerned.

  • The subway is a necessary public transportation in big cities, which many citizens are using now. However, the demands for subway inner circumstance by citizens are growing recently. Among them, the noise problem is the hot issue to be solved. So, in this study we classified the characteristics of subway noise using the classification and regression trees (CART) based on noise level data in line No. 5 in Seoul. After that We developed the models for effect of subway noise and analyzed the characteristics through it. The result of this study is that we need to consider the type of geometry design and operational factors when the problem of subway noise improves, because the factors which weigh with subway noise are different by type of geometry and operational part.

  • Detour of metro (subway) in metropolitan area has been regarded as one of inherent elements that make entire metro system less competitive than passenger cars. However, factors affecting detour of metro line is not specified clearly when a new subway system is planned or an existing system is improved. Previous detour-related studies was reviewed for developing 'distance efficeincy evaluation model' for metro as well as its counterpart (i.e. road). Metro line 3 (orange line) of Seoul metropolitan area was applied as a case study. As a results, the most detoured OD segment is Daechi - Apgujeong and its detour factor is 1.93 which means that the distance of the metro is 1.93 times longer distance compared to the distance of the road. The metro line 3 has averagely 20% longer distance compared to road for the identical O/D pairs.
