  • LiDAR data processing steps include noise removal, filtering, classification, segmentation, shape recognition, modeling, and quality assessment. This paper focuses on modeling and accuracy evaluation of 3D objects with curved surfaces. The appropriate modeling functions were determined by analyzing surface patch shape. Existing methods for modeling curved surface features require linearization, initial approximation, and iteration of the non-linear functions. However, proposed method could directly estimate the unknown parameters of the modeling functions. The results demonstrate feasibility of the proposed method. The proposed method was applied to the simulated and real building data of hemi-spherical and semi-cylindrical surfaces. The parameters and accuracy of the modeling functions were estimated. It is expected that the proposed method would contribute to automatic modeling of various objects.

  • Demographic change is the best indicator to be able to show the rural change exactly and thus becomes the factor to be considered by all means in the setting-up process of the rural development policy. First of all, this paper is concerned with the two main themes, depopulation and aging process of Goryeong-gun(county), after a brief consideration of the demographic trends in rural areas of Korea. And then it will analyze the population structures of 8 administrative districts of Goryeong-gun(1 Eub, 7 Myeons) to reveal the areal differentiation of rural demographic change. Like other rural areas in Korea, Goryeong-gun experienced a sharp depopulation and aging during last several decades, and it represents typical rural backward areas in Korea. But within the same county, the process of population change differs from district to district. On the basis of several demographic indicators, 8 administrative districts(Eub and Myeons) in Goryeong-gun can be classified into 4 types of population change, namely 'type with stagnant population' like Goryeong-eub, 'type with increasing population' like Dasan-myeon, 'type with decreasing population' like Seongsan-myeon Gaejin-myeon Sangrim-myeon, 'type with rapidly decreasing population' like Deokgok-myeon Unsu-myeon Ugok-myeon. It highlights the need to develop differentiated rural policies according to relevant regional conditions.

  • Estimation of passive earth pressure is an important factor in anchor block, temporary retaining wall and support block of raker that resist lateral earth pressure. In practice, due to ease of use, it is common to estimate the earth pressure using the theory of Coulomb and Rankine, which assumes the failure plane as a straight line. However, the passive failure plane generated by friction between the wall surface and the soil forms a complex failure plane: a curve near the wall and a flat plane near the ground surface. In addition, the limit displacement where passive earth pressure is generated is larger compared to where the active earth pressure is generated. Thus, it is essential to calculate the passive earth pressure that occurs at the allowable displacement range in order to apply the passive earth pressure to the design for structural stability reasons. This study analyzed the mobilized passive earth pressured to various displacement ranges within the passive limit displacement range using the semi-empirical method considering the complex failure plane.

  • This thesis aims to create a new technique by applying traditional ceramics technique. As a matter of fact, on the toremi plate of the sieve-frame skein technique, the weld on which various patterns are squeezed, is attached to the cylinder made of clay on the spinning wheel. And it is the concept that maximizes aesthetic beauty by expressing distorted pattern and free dismantling of existing pattern by pushing it out from inside by the turn of electric spinning wheel for the first time. The main point of view of this aesthetic source is that most of the surface of the ceramics is a spherical curved surface and looks distorted like an indicator drawn on a globe. The researcher created a dynamic and humorous technique of expression through the free dismantling of the squashed shapes and the distorted patterns and called it the bating sealing weld outer wall extension technique.

  • This study investigates the effect of the mixing elements on the pressure loss and mixing performance in line mixer. The high density ozone water devices mixed with gas and liquid are used in various fields such as sterilizing of group feeding facilities and water quality management at a fish farm. Due to the decrease in rainfall due to climate change, pasteurization of drinking water from ground water and surface water is extremely important. Therefore, it is intended to develop a line-mixed gas liquid mixer with a small amount of space. In this study, the effects of the number of static mixers and the types and the number of the orifice used in line mixer on the volume fraction and the pressure loss were studied by CFD simulation. The pressure drops of line mixer with orifice which curved vanes were attached to were down to more than 50 percent of that of line mixer with static mixer whereas the mixing performance of the former was similar to that of the latter.

  • In recent years, there are some confusions related to the definition and existence of mountain ranges, which have been described in current geography text books. We contend that these confusions came from the lack of understanding on the geomorphological processes that form the mountain system in Korea. This research attempts to clarify the definition of mountain ranges and offer geological and geomorphological explanations about the formation of them. Based on the analyses of the social and cultural causes underlying the recent debates on the existence of mountain ranges, we tried to identify the relationships among the definition of mountain ranges, geological structure of Korea, and the forming processes of mountain ranges. The current and past mountain range maps were compared with geological structures, geological maps, surface curvature, and hill shade maps. The latter two maps were derived from a Digital Elevation Model of the Korean Peninsular. The results show that we are able to prove the existence of most mountain ranges, which provides a useful framework to understand the geological evolution of Korean peninsular and formation of mountainous landscape of Korea. In terms of their morphological continuity and genesis, however, we identified five different categories of mountain ranges: 1) Uplift mountain ranges(Hamkyeong Sanmaek, Nangrim Sanmaek, Taebaek Sanmaek), which were formed by the uplift processes of the Korean Peninsular during the Tertiary; 2) Falut mountain ranges(Macheonryeong Sanmaek, Sobaek Sanmaek, Buksubaek Sanmaek), whirh were directly related to the uplift processes of the Korean Peninsular during the Tertiary; 3) Trust mountain ranges(Jekyouryeong Sanmaek, Kwangju Sanmaek, Charyeong Sanmaek, Noryeong Sanmaek), which were formed by the intrusion of granite and consequent orogenic processes during the Mesozoic era; 4) Drainage divide type mountain ranges, which were formed by the erosion processes after the uplift of Korean Peninsular; 5) Cross-drainage basin type mountain ranges (Kangnam Sanmaek, Eunjin Sanmaek, Myelak sanmaek), which were also formed by the erosion processes, but the mountain ranges cross several drainage basins as connecting mountains laterally We believe that the current social confusions related to the existence of mountain ranges has partly been caused by the vague definition of mountain ranges and the diversity of the forming processes. In order to overcome theses confusions, it is necessary to characterize the types of them according the genesis, the purpose of usages and also the scale of maps which will explains the mountain systems. It is also necessary to provide appropriate educational materials to increase the general public's awareness and understanding of geomorphological processes.

  • GOCi (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) is one of the COMS payloads that KARI is currently developing and scheduled to be in operation from around 2008. Its primary objective is to monitor the Korean coastal water environmental condition. We report the current progress in development of the integrated optical model as one of the key analysis tools for the GOCI in-orbit performance verification. The model includes the Sun as the emitting light source. The curved Earth surface section of 2500 km x 2500 km includingthe Korean peninsular os defined as a Lambertian scattering surface consisted of land and sea surface. From its geostationary orbit, the GOCI optical system observes the reflected light from the surfaces with varying reflectance representing the changes in its environmental conditions. The optical ray tracing technique was used to demonstrate the GOCI in-orbit performances such as red tide detection. The computational concept, simulation results and its implications to the on-going development of GOCI are presented.

  • This research aims 1) to analyse the spatial occurrence of red soils, in Korea 2) to predict their spatial distribution using terrain analyses, and 3) to interpret results from the perspective of pedogeomorphological processes. Red soils (often called red-yellow soils) in Korea are frequently found on welldrained plains and gently sloping areas. These soils are widely believed paleo-soils that were formed under hot and humid climatic conditions in the past. The spatial distribution of red soils was derived from the soil map of Korea, and a DEM based soil prediction was developed, based on a continuity equation to depict water and material flows over the landscape. About 64.5% of the red soil occurrence can be explained by the prediction. Close examinations between surveyed and predicted red soil maps show few distinctive spatial features. Granitic erosional plains at the inland of Korea show comparatively low occurrence of red soils, which might indicate active geomorphological processes within the basins. The occurrence of red soils at limestone areas is more abundant than that of the predicted, indicating the influence of parent materials on the formation of red soils. At and around lava plateau at Cheulwon and Youncheon, the occurrence of red soils is underestimated, which might partly be explained by the existence of loess-like surface deposits. There are also distinctive difference of prediction results between northern and southern parts of Korea (divided by a line between Seosan and Pohang). The results of this research calls for more detailed field-based investigations to understand forming processes of red soils, focusing on the spatial heterogeneity of pedological processes, the influence of parent materials, and difference in uplift patterns of the Korean peninsula.
