  • An integrated system of GIS and water quality model was suggested including the pollutant loads from the watershed. The developed system consists of two parts. First part is the GIS module. The geographic information system of the study area was built to provide the information on landuse and several surface factors concerning the overland flow processes of water and pollutants. Second part is the modeling modules which include storm event pollutant load model(SEPLM)., non-storm event pollutant load model(NSPLM), and river water quality simulation model(RWQSM). Models can calculate the pollutant load from the study area. The databases and models are linked through the interface modules resided in the overall system, which incorporate the graphical display modules and the operating scheme for the optimal use of the system. The developed system was applied to the Chungju multi-purpose reservoir to estimate the pollutant load during the four selected rainfall events between 1991 and 1993,. based upon monthly basis and seasonal basis in drought flow, low flow, normal flow and wet flow.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze fish fauna and species compositions along with trophic guilds, tolerance indicators, and fish community conditions before weir construction (BWC) and after weir construction (AWC) in the Yeongsan River watershed. Total 45 and 44 fish species were sampled in BWC and AWC, respectively without any distinct differences through weir constructions. Fish fauna analysis revealed that the dominant species was the same, Zacco platypus with 24.3% and 20.8% in BWC and AWC, respectively. However, the subdominant species were Carassius auratus with 8.9% in BWC but Opsarichthys uncirostris amurensis with 20.3%, almost identical that of the dominant species AWC. This phenomenon showed the distinct modification of species composition in the watershed. We sampled the $1^{st}$ class endangered species, Liobagrus obesus in tributary stream as previously reported. Also Culter brevicauda was sampled in the mainstream of Yeongsan River watershed and this was the first sampled record in this watershed. One of the most important features were an increase of exotic species, such as Micropterus salmoides and Lepomis macrochirus, with 3.2% BWC vs. 10.2% AWC as well as the increase in tolerant species with 49.2% BWC vs. 73.7% AWC, indicating ecological degradation through weir construction. Overall, our results indicated that fish fauna and composition analyses showed distinct ecological degradations related to increases of exotic and tolerant species AWC. Further long-term studies of fish monitoring should be conducted in the future to configure existent status of river conditions and to provide key information in order to conserve the healthy ecosystem.

  • Geochemical data of the Han river water, including four tributary water samples in the main Han river are presented in this paper. The concentration of dissolved ions in the North Han river water decreases in order of Ca>Na>K>Mg and HCO$_3$>NO$_3$>SO$_4$>Cl, which it mainly affected by the chemical weathering of granite and gneiss in the drainage basin. Meanwhile, the South Han river water shows a decreasing order of Ca>Mg>Na>K and HCO$_3$>SO$_4$>NO$_3$>Cl, which is controlled by the bed rock geology of carbornate rooks and the inflow of acid mine drainage from the metal and coal mines in the Taebaegsan and Hwanggangri areas. The main Han river waters are characterized by unusually high concentration of Na, Cl and SO$_4$ (Ca>Na>K>Mg and HCO$_3$>SO$_4$>CI>NO), indicating a significant anthropogenic pollution by human activities in the metropolitan Seoul city. The geochemical data of the Han river waters from 1981 through 1996 to 1999 records a significant increase in SO$_4$ and NO$_3$, which responsible for the increasing arid mane drainage and municipal anthropogenic pollution.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze long-term temporal trends of water chemistry and spatial heterogeneity for 7 sampling sites of the Hyeongsan River watershed using water quality dataset during 1999 to 2008 (obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea). The water quality, based on eight physical and chemical parameters, varied largely depending on the years, seasons and sampling sites. Seasonal and annual means of conductivity, used as a key indicator for a ionic dilution declined during the monsoon season and TN, based on overall mean of all sites, showed marked declines during the monsoon, compared to those of the premonsoon. In the mean time, BOD and COD had no significant relations with a precipitation, in spite of some differences in the sampling sites. In contrast, major input of SS occurred during the period of summer monsoon season. Spatial trend analyses of all parameters, except for DO and temperatures, showed that gyeongju city acted as a point source, and thus, water quality at the location of Site 4 declined abruptly, compared to locations of Site 1~2. Based on overall dataset, efficient water quality management in the point source tributary streams is required for better water quality of the main Hyeongsan River.

  • The quality of stormwater runoff has been a major concern in water quality preservation. Characteristics of heavy metals and conventional pollutants in surface runoff from industrial complex, during the first flush, were not completely understood, Generally, separated sewer system is known for their water quality with untreated wastewater during storm events. In this study, the quality and characteristics of surface runoff from the industrial complex were investigated. The target area in the industrial complex catchment was divided 4 sub-areas, and the quality of stormwater runoff from the selected drainage areas was investigated using a grab sampling method. The petro-chemical industry and the junkyard discharged relatively high concentration of conventional pollutants, such as BOD, COD, SS, and TN through the first flush runoff samples. On the other hand, a higher level of heavy metals was found in the first flush runoff from the metal-mechanical industry and the scrap storage yard. For metals, Fe, Zn and Cu were the most prevalent species found in the first flush runoff from all sites for every surface runoff samples, while Pb, As, Cd, Cr and Ni were the least prevalent species and Hg was not found in any sample at any site. These results suggest that the nature of pollutants in surface runoff from the industrial complex was related to the type of industry, and the concentration of pollutants was determinated by the degree of exposed pollutant sources and the characteristic of rainfall events at the sites.

  • The TMDL, the watershed-oriented water quality management policy, was introduced to inhibit the total amount of pollutant loading generation, and to develop the region environmentally friendly. However, despite the implementation of TMDL, the water quality of Nam river downstream has worsened continuously since 2005. Diverse pollution sources such as cities and industrial zone are scattered around the Nam river. Eutrophication are caused due to deterioration of water quality by low velocity. BOD concentrations in the eutrophic waters affected by the incoming BOD and the autochthonous BOD by the production of phytoplankton. In this study, the quantitative relation of incoming BOD and autochthonous BOD was analyzed for water quality management. The influence of autochthonous BOD was analyzed using QUALKO2 and QUAL2E. Considering the effects of Chl.a, BOD concentration from QUALKO2 model simulations is higher than BOD concentration from QUAL2E model. The results of QUALKO2 showed higher correlation with the measured data. Autochthonous BOD needs to be managed to solve the water pollution problem of Nam river downstream, which is looking for ways to reduce Chl.a by using the increase of the dam outflow and the improvement of the water quality from WWTP.

  • This study was initiated from question raised on existing study achievement that purpose for Wolji construction simply was to build gardens. In this research, after raising a question on existing theory about the Wolji construction, another purpose of Wolji construction is investigated. Study result is as follows. First, two questions raised on Wolji construction are "Was Wolji constructed as a garden from the beginning?" and "Was Wolji region available land as now at time of creation?" However, it was verified that the purpose of Wolji construction was to use not as a garden but as a detention pond, and the land of such region was unserviceable at time of Wolji construction. Second, in terms of locations and Topography, it was confirmed that Wolji has a favorable condition for undercurrent function as it is positioned at the end point of flow path formed by gushout water spurting from the water flooded from Bukcheon, or low and wetland. Third, from hydraulic point of view, Bukcheon always has a possibility of flooding occurrence before completing river bank build up, and such flooding damage was curved at Guhwangdongwonji, and at Wolji once again in order to prevent the damage spread into the center of Wanggyeong. Fourth, from urban planning point of view, it was confirmed that urban functions were not established in Wolji region before Wolji construction, and urban planning was completed through the opening of roads and others, after Wolji construction. Fifth, it was confirmed that inflow and outflow device of Wolji, and vertical stone platform at western side of Wolji were the facilities to provide sufficient functions as detention ponds.

  • An effective analytical method has been developed for the determination of β-blockers(atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol) and 6 β-lactams(amoxicillin, penicillin G, cefaclor, cefadroxil, cephalexin and cephradine) in water samples using two different cartridges. The samples were extracted by solid-phase extraction (SPE) with the usage of polymeric hydrophile-lipophile balance(HLB cartridges) and strong cation-exchange mixed-mode polymeric sorbent (MCX cartridges). A XDB-C18 column(1.8 μm; 3.0 mm × 100 mm) was used for the sufficient chromatographic resolution. The calibration curves showed good linearity with high correlation coefficients (>0.995). The method detection limits (MDL) and the limits of quantification(LOQ) were from 1.1 to 3.9 ng/L and from 5 to 13 ng/L, respectively. The method was applied for the determination of the target compounds in tributaries and raw water of the Han River and these were found at N.D. to 0.209 μg/L.

  • Intoxication of murine macrophages (RAW 264.7) with the anthrax lethal toxin (LeTx 100 ng/ml) results in profound alterations in the host cell gene expression. The role of LeTx in mediating these effects is unknown, largely due to the difficulty in identifying and assigning function to individual proteins. In this study, we have used two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to analyze the protein profile of murine macrophages treated with the LeTx, and have coupled this to protein identification using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Interpretation of the peptide mass fingerprint data has relied primarily on the ProFound database. Among the differentially expressed spots, cleaved mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (Mek1) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were increased in the LeTx treated macrophages. Mek1 acts as a negative element in the signal transduction pathway, and G6PD plays the role for the protection of the cells from the hyper-production of active oxygen. Our results suggest that this proteomic approach is a useful tool to study protein expression in intoxicated macrophages and will contribute to the identification of a putative substrate for LeTx.
