  • The effect of borehole thermal resistance on the borehole length is studied. In performing this work a new concept BLRR(borehole length reduction rate) is developed based on the line source model. The solution of line source model is shown to be valid through the comparison with the data of thermal response test. It is shown that BLRR is a function of soil thermal conductivity(k) and borehole thermal resistance($R_b$). The value of BLRR increases with increasing k, which means reducing $R_b$ is more effective when k is high. The reduction of borehole length with change of $R_b$ is easily estimated with BLRR. The validity of BLRR is also examined with EED analysis.

  • The design of a ground-source heat pump system includes specifications for a ground loop heat exchanger where the heat transfer rate depends on the thermal conductivity of the ground. To evaluate this heat transfer property, in-situ thermal response tests on four vertical test boreholes with different grouting materials were conducted by adding a monitored amount of heat to water over various test lengths. By measuring the water temperatures entering and exiting the loop, water flow rate, and heat load, effective thermal conductivity values of the ground were determined. The effect of increasing thermal conductivity of grouting materials from 0.82 to 1.05 W/m$^{\circ}C$ resulted in overall increases in effective ground thermal conductivity by 25.8% to 69.5%.

  • In recent, there are many studies associated with energy piles to save initial construction cost for ground source heat pump system. In this study, to evaluate geothermal exchange rates two types (a connection type and a slinky type) of cast-in-place energy piles (PRD, 4.5m in depth, 1,200 mm in diameter) were constructed for the tests and their efficiencies were compared with numerical analysis results. As a result, starting with operation, geothermal exchange rate gradually decreases due to exchange of lower ground temperature. In the case of connection type, temperature difference is $0.37^{\circ}C$ in heating mode and $0.34^{\circ}C$, in cooling mode, respectively. In addition, in case of a connection type, geothermal exchange rate in heating mode is 2,314W/m and in cooling mode, 252.2W/m whose value is 9% higher than in heating mode. In the case of slinky type, the average geothermal exchange rate in heating mode is 168.0W/m, which is about 27% lower than that of connection type.

  • The thermal analysis is accomplished with the route for the underground power transmission system which adopts the water pipe cooling with trough in tunnel. As a result, in case of a cooling system based on a refrigerator, the optimum condition for the flow rate of cooling water and the air velocity are calculated as the $2{\sim}3{\ell}/s/pipe$ and $1{\sim}2m/s/fan$, respectively. On the other hand, in case of cooling tower the optimum condition for them are calculated as the $2{\sim}3{\ell}/s/pipe$ and 6 m/s/fan, respectively. But the cooling system based on a cooling tower has the problem of enlarging the size of cooling fan and suppressing the labor of operator in tunnel. Therefore, to meet all the cooling conditions for a given cooling section, the cooling system based on a refrigerator is more acceptable.

  • The cable cooling through installing the cooling pipe along the transmission cable becomes universal in foreign leading countries, especially in Japan, and, there are so many study results inside and outside of the country. However, the remarkable study result for cooling method of cable splice part is not achieved in spite of its importance. This paper is, therefore, carrys out detailed heat transfer analysis of existing 154kV underground cable-splice, depending on the insulation thickness variation when it is installed in manhole of tunnel whose temperature is maintained as $10^{\circ}C$ using refrigerator. This paper study also the cooling method of underground cable splice based on this result.

  • A ground loop heat exchanger in a ground source heat pump system is an important unit that determines the thermal performance of a system and its initial cost. A proper design requires certain site specific parameters, most importantly the ground effective thermal conductivity, the borehole thermal resistance and the undisturbed ground temperature. This study was performed to investigate the effect of some parameters such as borehole lengths, various grouting materials and U tube configurations on ground effective thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance. In this study, thermal response tests were conducted using a testing device to 9 different ground loop heat exchangers. From the experimental results, the length of ground loop heat exchanger affects to the effective thermal conductivity. The results of this experiment shows that higher thermal conductivity of grouting materials leads to the increase effective thermal conductivity from 22 to 32%. Also, mounting spacers have increased by 14%.

  • The use of energy pile foundation has increased for economic utilization of geothermal energy. In particular, coil-shaped ground heat exchanger (GHE) is preferred to the conventional U-shaped exchanger to ensure better efficiency of heat exchange rate. This paper presents a numerical and experimental study on the heat transfer behavior of PHC energy piles. Field thermal performance tests (TPTs) were conducted for the PHC energy piles installed in a partially saturated weathered granite soil deposit, in which two types of GHEs were considered: W and coil shaped GHEs. Besides, three-dimensional finite element analyses were also conducted, and the results were compared with the experimental results. According to the results of TPT and numerical analyses, the coil shaped GHE showed 10~15% higher heat exchange rate than the W type GHE in the PHC energy piles.

  • In the present study, a ground heat exchanger was installed for each heat source in the system at the site to evaluate ground heat conductivity, constructability, and economic feasibility; the factors considered in the study included ground heat, groundwater, fillers (such as bentonite and pea pebbles) and the shape of the heat exchange pipe (e.g., U and D-U). The aim was to determine the ground heat exchanger appropriate for the geothermal system in the 3rd-phase construction of Incheon International Airport. A comparative cost analysis of the initial costs based on the above information showed that although the initial costs of the regular vertical closed loop-II and modified vertical closed loop were lower than those of the regular vertical closed loop-I, they could not be expected to deliver high economic efficiency from the viewpoint of constructability (filler injection, heat exchange pipe insertion). The initial costs proved to be higher in the case of Geohil.

  • The in-situ thermal response test for the design of a ground heat exchanger of geothermal heat pumps have difficulty in predicting the outlet temperature according to the variation of conditions due to the expense and time. This paper suggests a 3-D CFD analysis method to predict the heat transfer performance of vertical type ground heat exchanger, which is mostly used in national, and the outlet temperature and the slope of two in-situ thermal response tests were compared to test the proposed CFD reliability. The results of CFD analysis showed that the outlet temperature was predicted to within $0.5^{\circ}C$ of the actual value and the slope was predicted to within 1.6%. The reliability of the CFD analysis method was confirmed using this process, and the outlet temperature prediction of the two in-situ thermal response tests was obtained by changing ${\pm}20%$ of the flow rate and the effective thermal conductivity conditions, respectively. The results of CFD analysis showed that the outlet temperature of Case 1 was 28.0 (-20%) and $29.6^{\circ}C$ (+20%) for the flow rate variation and $29.6^{\circ}C$ (-20%) and $28.0^{\circ}C$ (+20%) for the effective thermal conductivity variation, and the outlet temperature of Case 2 was 28.4 (-20%) and $29.8^{\circ}C$ (+20%) for the flow rate variation and $29.7^{\circ}C$(-20%) and $28.4^{\circ}C$(+20%) for the effective thermal conductivity variation.
