  • Objective : This study investigated the prevalence of dysphagia in older adults in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and its impact on Quality of Life (QoL) and educational needs. Methods : A cross-sectional survey was conducted from August 1 to 15, 2023, with 207 cognitively normal older adults from three senior welfare centers. Data included general characteristics, Korean-version of the Eating Assessment Tool (K-EAT-10), Swallowing-QoL, and educational needs related to swallowing disorders. Dysphagia was defined by a K-EAT-10 score of 3 or higher. Participants were divided into normal and risk groups for analysis using chi-square and Independent t-test. Results : The prevalence of dysphagia risk (K-EAT-10 score of 3 or higher) was 41.5% (86 individuals). Among the 92 individuals reporting dysphagia symptoms, 64 (69.6%) were at risk. QoL was significantly lower in the risk group, especially among those living alone or with denture discomfort. The most preferred educational need was training in eating solid foods (Mean = 4.27), with higher needs in the dysphagia risk group. Conclusion : This study underscores the prevalence of dysphagia, its impact on QoL, and the need for educational programs. • The objective of this study is to suggest measures to support the community-based rehabilitation sports service for health of people with disabilities, which can be applicable to South Korea, by analyzing the rehabilitation sports service support system of Germany and Japan. Through literature review and direct visiting to Japan, the researcher explored such factors as, background of initiating the rehabilitation sports service, concept, range, and subject of theservice, service delivery procedure, and institutions, and finance of the service. The institutional implications are as follows: First, the concept and range of rehabilitation sports are gradually expanding. Initially, the rehabilitation sports started targeting for veterans with disabilities for the purpose of medical rehabilitation in Germany and Japan. As time passes, however, the importance of rehabilitation sports has emphasized, and the subjects have gradually expanded for the purpose of preventing disability or secondary diseases caused by disability. Second, in order to perform rehabilitation sports service, it is essential to have manpower with expertise in medical treatment, welfare, disability, and exercise prescription, likewise Germany and Japan do. Third, Germany and Japan emphasize the assignment of rehabilitation sports instructors in institutions, rather designating specific institutions, which is moving toward the manpower-based rehabilitation sports service, rather place-based service. Fourth, rather having simple medical programs or sports-oriented programs, it would be necessary to have the systematized disease-oriented programs for each type of disability. Lastly, the clients-oriented service delivery process should be established.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review vestibulo-ocular reflex and vestibular rehabilitation for balace problem in elderly. Falling is a common problem associated with aging. Falling and the resulting consequences constitutes one of the most common and serious problems. Balance deficits are one of the top risk factors for falling. Three systems(visual, vestibular and somatosensory) need to be integrated and used to coordinate and control balance. During normal ambulation and head movement, the vestibulo-ocular reflex(VOR) stabilizes gaze, and helps to keep the image of the retina. There is a direct association between deficits in VOR and falls. Older adults have a decreased ability to enhance and suppress the VOR. Vestibular rehabilitation(VR) is an exercise-based group of approaches that began with the aim of central nervous system compensation. VR restores VOR gain and reduces error using repetitive movements of the head and eyes. Many researches showd balance and gait tests were superior in the VR group. It is considered this article helps to prevent elderly falling with vestibular rehabilitation.

  • The aim of this study was to explore the effects of the epidemiological factor (depression), the behavioral factor (activities of daily living), the predisposing factor (self-efficacy), reinforcing factors (family support, professional support), and enabling factor (resource availability, accessibility) on quality of life in home-dwelling disabled people in rural areas. The conceptual model for this study was established on the basis of the PRECEDE model which was developed by Green and Kreuter. Data were drawn from the "Preliminary Investigation for Community-centered rehabilitation" conducted by a public health center located in the O province in 2011 and 186 of 190 disabled people who participated in the survey were included in the final analysis. Data were analyzed using Direct effects on quality of life arose from latent variables depicting the epidemiological factor (depression)and reinforcing factor (family support, professional support), while indirect effects arose from the behavioral factor (activities of daily living), the predisposing factor (self-efficacy), and enabling support (resource availability, accessibility). This model explained 85.5% of the variance in quality of life among rural disabled individuals. These findings may have shed some light on the necessity of including strategies to reduce depression and to strengthen supports from family and healthcare professionals when performing rehabilitation programs to improve quality of life in home-dwelling disabled people in rural areas. Furthermore, it suggested that it would be useful to develop specific strategies and tactics which might increase self-efficacy and to expand linkages between public health centers and other professional institutions such as hospitals for community-centered rehabilitation services for individuals with disabilities.
