  • Through the UN 2030 Agenda adopted by the United Nations, sustainable development is bringing about many changes around the world. While discussions continue on the roles of libraries in supporting sustainable development in library communities, specific discussions on this have not been made enough. This study reconsidered the roles and functions of libraries to support sustainable development and discussed approaches to which libraries can perform in terms of informational, social, cultural, and environmental aspects. It also proposed a plan to allow libraries and librarians to lay the groundwork for supporting the sustainable development of society by reconsidering the roles of librarians as the core of all library activities to support sustainable development.

As a conclusion, this study suggests reinforcement of basics and value marketing, space marketing, blue ocean marketing as library marketing strategies for providing sustainable services. This study can be used as a reference for academic libraries and librarians to sustain or extend library services. The marketing strategies suggested in this paper can be helpful for academic libraries to overcome pandemic crisis in Korea. • This article delves into community archives based on the archival project of Dongjak-gu Public Library on the search toward sustainability. Dongjak-gu has conducted a local archiving project that involves collecting local records, focusing on the role of local public institutions as representative districts in the local region after the library was established in September 2013. Thus far, we are managing the project and records that are piled at the public library, and as the placement for archiving local records conducted in a local public library does not match its role, the national/city/province system for archiving local records faces a challenge for long-term sustainability. Therefore, we would like to present an idea for sustainability by discussing our concerns and experiences in this paper.

  • A great number of institutions around the world have been building digital repositories to communicate scholarly information. Meanwhile, digital repositories have been struggling with how to preserve increased volume of digital contents for the long term and how to build a sustainable information environment. The HathiTrust partnership was established to meet the need of a sustainable collaborative model of digital repositories in research libraries, mainly in North America, and has been expanded globally by signing with other libraries around the world. This paper is dealt with the establishment, operation and policy, construction status, and user service of the HathiTrust. The results presented in this paper include the benefits and potential opportunities of the HathiTrust as a participating member. Partnership in HathiTrust would allow each member institution to provide more cost-effective operations, shared management and long-term preservation of digital content, ease of copyright management, and increased accessibility. In the future it is expected to provide a shared storage of printed materials and to facilitate a big data research center.

  • The purpose of this study is to describe the trends and contents of literature in green library and to suggest the research direction on green library. Earlier studies focus on the green library architecture and necessity, after then green library management studies have proliferated. Green library architecture studies have emphasized on 'energy and atmosphere' and 'indoor environmental quality' based upon 5 categories of LEED evaluation system. Green library management studies have focused on library resources recycling and utilizing energy through effective management of library collection. Based on the analysis of literature, five research directions are suggested, such as the number of libraries in an area, library shelf position and space, library space program, collection ratio for library storage, and user studies.

  • Libraries are public institutions in charge of information distribution. Libraries need to secure sustainability in providing services so that they can contribute to social integration even in disaster situations. The recent spread of the Corona 19 virus has negatively affected the operation of libraries and libraries have suspended services and users' visits to prevent possible infections. This study intends to examine responses of domestic and foreign libraries to the unexpected disasters, and also presents measures to ensure sustainability and considerations in establishing these measures.
