  • This paper suggests an installation procedure of a smart skin prototype into an aircraft, flight demonstration test procedures and test results. Four communication and navigation antennas are embedded into one Conformal Load-bearing Antenna Structure(CLAS). Log periodic patch type antenna was designed as a multi-band antenna to cover four antenna frequency bands. The requirements of CLAS were verified by ground tests before aircraft installation. A CLAS speed-brake was installed into KT-1 aircraft and performances of dual antennas were verified as multi-antenna tests on the ground. Electromagnetic compatibility tests were conducted to check compatibility between the CLAS and all existing equipments. Flight demonstration tests were conducted by one sortie of flight test for one antenna. The activeness and continuity of communication and navigation signal during the flight, null area of antenna signal along the circling flight were monitored. The embedded antennas worked better than expected during four sorties of flight tests.

  • In the present study, ground tests and CFD simulations for a ducted fan system were performed to verify the hovering performance of the ducted fan system designed by KARI rotorcraft team. Six blades were composed for the ducted fan, and target rotating speed of the fan was decided to 4,000 RPM. Collective pitch angles were considered from 20 degrees to 36 degrees. The test data were obtained by increasing the rotating speed up to 4,000 RPM in 1,000 RPM increments. The CFD simulations were considered only 4,000 RPM of rotating speed. The hovering performance was represented by thrust, power, duct thrust ratio, and FM(Figure of Merit). Reliability of the performance results was ensured through the test and simulation results, and it was found that the target performance was achieved under conditions above 31 degrees of the pitch angle.

  • The Preparation for a flight test of the launch vehicle to verify the performance of the liquid rocket engine(LRE) is proceeding. Flight test of liquid rocket engine costs an enormous amount of money, has a restriction on measurement channels, so it requires the optimal measurement plan to check the prelaunch operation and determine the cause of abnormal situation. This paper surveys the foreign sources for LRE flight test. In recent years, as the tendency to eliminate all faults of LRE at the ground test the number of flight test is decreasing and in contrast, the number of measurements and measurement accuracy is increasing. This paper may be used as a reference for the preparation of an LRE flight test.

  • In this paper, a new load monitoring system for military aircraft is introduced. This system consists of sensors, an onboard device and an ground analysis equipment. The sensors and onboard device are mounted on the aircraft and the ground analysis equipment is operated on the ground. Through this system, structural static load can be estimated with flight parameters and structural responses can be measured by sensors due to static load, dynamic load and unexpected events. Especially, optical fiber sensors with mutiplexing capability are utilized. The onboard device was specially designed for complying the requirements of relevant military specifications and was verified through a series of the environment tests. This system was used and evaluated through ground structural tests before flight tests. In the near future, this system will be applied to military aircraft as a structural load monitoring system after flight test evaluation.

  • A composite case was designed to satisfy the required condition of KSLV-I kick motor system. we performed the structure and combustion tests to insure the reliability of the case before the production of the flight model. The hydraulic, vacuum and non destruction testes as the structure test were carried out to confirm the strength of the components of the case and the characteristics of the thermal and structure were investigated through the ground combustion test.

  • In this paper, a practical method of estimating the flap hinge moments which change according to the aircraft flap operations was introduced. For the flap design, the hinge moment derived by structural load analysis and wind tunnel tests was able to be compared with the real flight hinge moment, and the static safety of the flap structure could be verified though this comparison. In order to perform the tests, two strain gauges were installed on the flap hinge and an onboard device for aircraft load monitoring was utilized. Through the ground test, the correlation between the strain and the moment of the flap hinge was calibrated with analytic and finite element analysis. During the flight test, strain signals together with the flap deflection angles and airspeed were recorded. Finally, the flight hinge moments could be predicted by the measured strain which was calibrated with the analytic and the finite element analysis.

  • Calculation program to predict required pressurant mass for propellant tank was verified through flight test data. This program was already developed and verified through ground test data, but to increase reliability of program, it was compared with flight test data of KSR-III launched in 2002. Because pressurant temperature incoming to propellant tank was not measured in flight test, that was assumed in calculation program. Required pressurant mass and inside temperature of oxygen tank dome was compared. Validation of calculation program was verified by showing required pressurant mass accuracy of 6%.

  • Airborne display systems provide pilots with a variety of information needed to operate aircraft. Software faults in the display system can seriously affect the operation of the aircraft, because it can provide inaccurate information to the pilot. Therefore, the software faults are identified and eliminated through ground testing and flight testing. This paper presents an analysis tool called FDR (flight data replay) for flight test of airborne display software. This tool works in real time with the mission computer of aircraft. Also, the tool reproduces the functional error conditions that appear in the display systems by applying flight test data to the display software.
