  • Recently, ground subsidence has been steadily occurring mainly in downtown areas, threatening the safety of citizens. Under the road, various underground facilities such as water supply pipe, sewage pipe, and communication pipe are buried. Due to the aging of these underground facilities and the reckless development of the underground, it is acting as a cause of ground subsidence. Although there is a result of analyzing the risk of ground subsidence according to the deterioration of the existing pipeline, there is no result of analyzing the risk of ground subsidence using the density of pipelines indicating ground disturbance. Therefore, in this study, the density of the underground space was analyzed using the data of six types of representative underground pipelines in Seoul, and a study was conducted on whether there is a correlation with the ground subsidence. As a result, it was found that the density of underground facilities is high in the area where the ground subsidence occurred, indicating that the density of pipelines have an effect on the ground subsidence.

  • Microtunnelling is a technique applied to install a small-size tunnel in a soft cohesionless ground. In microtunnelling, a series of concrete tubular segments are pushed from a starting pit to power-line tunnel under a runway of JFK international airport at New York. During the microtunneling process, bentonite is jetted with very hyh pressure through a nozzle to advance disturbance in the subgrade caused by the pressurized bentonite in the aspects of subgrade stiffness. SASW measurements were performed on the runway above the center line of the shear wave velocity profiles. Besides the change of subgrade stiffness, the change of subgrade strength was also evaluated by the site-specific relationships between shear wave velocity and N value, which was determined by N values. The estimated N values gave a clue to the understanding of the change of subgrade strength.

  • Bucket foundations are widely used in offshore areas due to their various benefits such as easy and fast installations. A bucket is installed using self-weight and the hydraulic pressure difference across the lid generated by pumping out water from inside the bucket. When buckets are installed in high permeable soil such as sands, upward seepage flow occurs around the bucket tip and interior, leading to a decrease in the effective stress in the soil inside the buckets. This process reduces the penetration resistance of buckets. However, the soil inside and outside the bucket can be disturbed due to the upward seepage flow and this can change the soil properties around the bucket. Moreover, upward seepage flow can create significant soil plug heave, thereby hindering the penetration of the bucket to the target depth. Despite of these problems, soil disturbance and soil plug heave created by suction installation are not well understood. This study aims to investigate the behavior of soil during suction installation. To comprehend the phenomena of soil plug heave during installation, a series of small-scale model tests were conducted with different testing conditions. From a series of tests, the effects of tip thickness of bucket, penetration rate, and self-weight were identified. Finally, soil properties inside the bucket after installation were approximated from the measured soil plug heave.

  • This study analyzed degree of disturbance, using specimens by laboratory test with large block specimens and piston samplers collected from the Korea's two typical soft ground districts: South coast Gwangyang and Yangsan. To assess the characteristics of compression index of laboratory test incurred by disturbance, the compression index of laboratory test was compared with the back analysis compression index resulting from the analysis of the measured settlement. The analysis of specimen disturbance of the laboratory test results with the piston specimens of the two districts found that the qualities of most specimens were poor and the settlement predicted by the laboratory test compression index was underestimated. The analysis of test material taken from nearby areas proved that the disturbance degrees of large block specimens were lower than that of the piston specimens. The hyperbolic method, Hoshino method, Asaoka method, and ${\sqrt{S}}$ method, all of which are predictive methods using measured settlement, were employed to reach a conclusion that reliabilities of each predictive method except predictive material of a few points were the same. To compensate the disturbance effects on compression index of the piston specimens, we suggested a new modification formula that estimates compression index of piston specimens, using Schmertmann's corrected compression index, and back analysis compression index from the analysis of predictive settlement.

  • In this study, evaluation of samples' reflection of in-situ condition was performed for those by 225 mm KICT large sampler and NX size piston sampler. Disturbance analysis was conducted for the clay sampled by two kinds of sampler throughout consolidation tests, uniaxial tests and triaxial test, under the same condition. From the analysis it can be seen that not only the initial void ratio and preconsolidation pressure from KICT large sampler but strength parameters from both uniaxial and triaxial compression tests are also about 10% higher than those of NX size piston sampler's.

  • A pile is a type of medium for constructing superstructures in weak geotechnical conditions. A pretensioned spun high-strength concrete (PHC) pile is composed of high-strength concrete with a specified strength greater than 80 MPa. Therefore, it has advantages in resistance to axial and bending moments and quality control and management since it is manufactured in a factory. However, the skin friction of a pile, which accounts for a large portion of the pile bearing capacity, is only approximated using empirical equations or standard penetration test (SPT) N-values. Particularly, there are some poor research results on the pile-soil interface under the seismic loads in Korea. Additionally, some studies do not consider geoenvironmental elements, such as groundwater pH values. This study performs sets of cyclic simple shear tests using submerged concrete specimens for 1 month to consider pH values of groundwater and clay specimens composed of kaolinite to generate a pile-soil interface. 0.2 and 0.4 MPa of normal stress conditions are considered in the case of pH values. The disturbed state concept is employed to express the dynamic behavior of the interface, and the disturbed function parameters are newly suggested. Consequently, the largest disturbance increase under basic conditions is observed, and an early approach to the failure under low normal stress conditions is presented. The disturbance function parameters are also suggested to express this disposition quantitatively.

  • Stress is an invisible physical quantity, necessitating the use of earth pressure cells for its measurement within theground. Traditional strain-gauge type earth pressure cells, due to their rigidity, can distribute stress within the ground and subsequently affect the accuracy of earth pressure measurements. In contrast, force sensing resistors are thin and flexible, enabling the minimization of stress disturbance when measuring stress within the ground. This study developed a system that utilizes force sensing resistors to measure ground stress. It involved constructing a soil chamber for calibrating the force sensing resistors, assessing the variability of measurements from resistors embedded in sand ground, and verifying the attachment of pucks to the sensing area of the resistors.
