  • Engineers should take great care of characterizing the engineering properties of mudrock, because the uncemented mudrock can be considered as a hard rock in appearance. Therefore, the mudrock samples obtained from the cut slope in Gyeongki-do were tested to evaluate the strength characteristics of uncemented mudrock in this study. The performed tests are index properties, slake durability, and swelling tests for the classification of the mudrock for engineering practice. To evaluate the effect of water on the engineering properties of the uncemented mudrock, resonant column, triaxial compression and direct shear tests with various water contents were performed. With the increasing water contents, stiffness at very small to small strain region and the cohesion value of the strength parameters decrease. Based on the test results, engineers should take great care of evaluating the engineering properties of uncemented mudrock.

  • Shortly after tunnel boring machine (TBM) was introduced in the tunneling industry, the use of TBM has surprisingly increased worldwide due to its performance together with the benefit of being safely and environmentally friendly. One of the main cost items in the TBM tunneling in rock and soil is changing damaged or worn cutters. It is because that the cutter change is a time-consuming and costly activity that can significantly reduce the TBM utilization and advance rate and has a major effect on the total time and cost of TBM tunneling projects. Therefore, the importance of accurately evaluating the cutter life can never be overemphasized. However, the prediction of cutter wear in soil, rock including mixed face is very complex and not yet fully clarified, subsequently keeping engineers busy around the world. Various prediction models for cutter wear have been developed and introduced, but these models almost usually produce highly variable results due to inherent uncertainties in the models. In this study, a case study of design and construction of disc cutter change is introduced and analyzed, rather than proposing a prediction model of cutter wear. As the disc cutter is strongly affected by the geological condition, TBM machine characteristic and operation, authors believe it is very hard to suggest a generalized prediction model given the uncertainties and limitations therefore it would be more practical to analyze a real case and provide a detailed discussion of the difference between prediction and result for the cutter change. By doing so, up-to-date idea about planning and execution of cutter change in practice can be promoted.

  • In winter season, the pore water inside the ground freezes and thaws repetitively due to the cold air temperature. When the freezing-thawing processes are repeated on the ground, the change in soil particle structure occurs and thus the damage of the infrastructure may be following. This study was performed in order to investigate the stiffness change of soils due to the freeze-thaw by using elastic waves. Sand-silt mixtures are prepared with in the silt fraction of 40 %, 60 % and 80 % in weight and in the degree of saturation of 40 %. The specimens are placed into the square freezing-thawing cell by the temping method. For the measurement of the elastic waves, a pair of the bender elements and a pair of piezo disk elements are installed on the cell, and a thermocouple is inserted into soils for the measurement of the temperature. The temperature of the mixtures is decreased from $20^{\circ}C$ to $-10^{\circ}C$ during freezing, is maintained at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 18 hours, is gradually increased up to the room temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ to thaw the specimens. The shear waves, the compressional waves and the temperature are measured during the freeze-thaw process. The experimental result indicates that the shear and the compressional wave velocities after thawing are smaller than those of before freezing. The velocity ratio of after thawing to before freezing of shear wave is smaller than that of the compressional wave. As silt fraction increases from 40 % to 80 %, the shear and compressional wave velocities are gradually increased. This study suggests that the freezing-thawing process in unsaturated soil loosens the soil particle structure, and the shear wave velocity reflects the effect of freezing-thawing more sensitively than the compressional wave velocity.

  • A ground motion resulting from the destructive earthquakes can subject reinforced concrete members to very large forces. The reinforced concrete shear walls are designed as earthquake-resistant members of building structure in order to prevent severe damage due to the ground motions. The current research activities on seismic behavior of reinforced concrete member under ground motions have been limited to the shaking table test or equivalent static cyclic test and the obtained results have been summarized and proposed for the seismic design retrofit of structural columns or shear walls. The present study predicted the seismic response and failure behavior of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to base acceleration using the finite element method. A decrease in strength and stiffness, yielding of reinforcing bar, and repetition of crack closing and opening due to seismic load with cyclic nature are accompanied by the crack which is necessarily expected to take place in concrete member. In this study the nonlinear material models for concrete and reinforcing bar based on biaxial stress field and algorithm of dynamic analysis were combined to construct the analytical program using the finite element method. The analytical seismic response and failure behaviors of reinforced concrete shear wall subjected to several base accelerations were compared with reliable experimental result.

  • In this paper, we study the applicability of Tuned Mass Damper(TMD) to improve seismic performance of piping system under earthquake loading. For this purpose, a mode analysis of the target pipeline is performed, and TMD installation locations are selected as important modes with relatively large mass participation ratio in each direction. In order to design the TMD at selected positions, each corresponding mode is replaced with a SDOF damped model, and accordingly the corresponding pipeline is converted into a 2-DOF system by considering the TMD as a SDOF damped model. Then, optimal design values of the TMD, which can minimize the dynamic amplification factor of the transformed 2-DOF system, are derived through GA optimization method. The proposed TMD design values are applied to the pipeline numerical model to analyze seismic performance with and without TMD installation. As a result of numerical analyses, it is confirmed that the directional acceleration responses, the maximum normal stresses and directional reaction forces of the pipeline system are reduced, quite a lot. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic information with respect to the improvement of the seismic performance of the piping system in the future.

  • Surplus soil is commonly used at construction sites, because suitable fill material is not always immediately available and leads to additional costs. However, most surplus soils do not meet the requirement of suitable fill material to achieve the stability and strength of embankments. In this study, Proctor compaction tests and field compaction tests were performed by installing geosynthetics to resolve the problems caused by compacting unsuitable soils. Compaction energy and the number of geosynthetics were changed under the type A- and D- and type A Proctor compaction tests (KS F 2312), respectively. The field compaction testing using geosynthetics was performed on surplus soils of high water content. Optimum water content and maximum dry density of compacted soil decreased and increased by reinforcing geosynthetics, respectively. Compaction curves behaved with geosynthetics as the compaction curves behaved with higher compaction energy. Efficient compaction was possible because the compaction energy increased to 2.10 and 2.71 times the compaction energy required to achieve the same maximum dry density with one and two geosynthetic layer(s), respectively. Furthermore, field compaction tests verified that efficient compaction was possible because the dry density of unsuitable surplus soils of high water content was increased by reinforcing geosynthetics.

  • Anaerobic digestion was investigated for the stabilization of sludge, decrease of volatile solids, production of biogas for wastewater sludge. In this study, total solids and volatile solids, elemental analysis were conducted to determine characteristics of various types of sludges and investigate the feasibility of biogas production of Municipal Wastewater Sludge (MWS), Industrial Wastewater Sludge (IWS), mixed sludge (Mix), and Municipal Wastewater Sludg Cake (MWSC). Total solids, volatile solids, and C/N ratio were determined in the range of 11.2~20.6 %, 62.1~83.1 % of TS and 4.96~8.33 %. Using the biochemical methane potential (BMP test), mixed sludge and wastewater sludge finished the methane production within approximately 20 day and 16~17 day. Sludge cake finished within 10 day. Mixed sludge produced 395.5 mL $CH_4$ per g of Volatile Solid (VS) and resulted in the highest methane production. For carbon dioxide production, five sludges had similar value of accumulated carbon dioxide production except for sludge cake.

  • A reinforcement is required to ensure the structural safety in case of railway embankment excavation under railway load. A large diameter soil nailing with concrete wall is applied as the reinforcement method instead of the conventional soil nailing system. In this study, a series of 3 dimensional numerical analyses are performed to investigate the optimum reinforcement considering 15 different conditions based on the length, lateral spacing, diameter, and inclination of the reinforcement. The interface between soil nail and perimetric grout is considered by means of cohesion, stiffness and perimeter of the grout. 0.3 m of reinforcement diameter is assessed as the most appropriate based on the economical viewpoint though ground displacement decreases with the increase of diameter, however the difference of displacement is negligible between 0.4 m and 0.3 m of diameter. Surface settlement, lateral displacement of wall, and stress of reinforcement are calculated and economic viewpoint to reinforce embankment considered. Consequently, the optimum reinforcement conditions considering those factors are evaluated as 3 m in length, 0.3 m in diameter, 1.5 m in lateral spacing, and 10 degree of inclination angle in the case of 3 m of excavation depth. Additionally, inclined potential failure surface occurs with approximately 60 degrees from the end of nails and the surface settlement and wall lateral displacement are restrained successfully by the large diameter soil nailing, based on the result of shear strain rate.

  • In this study, the behavioral characteristics of the fill dam were analyzed during water level fluctuations through a numerical analysis model, and the reservoir safety management plan was prepared. The variation in plastic deviatoric strain, horizontal displacement, stress path, pore water pressure, etc., due to elevation of water level in the upper and lower sides of shell and core were analyzed using numerical analysis software, viz. GTS NX and LIQCA. The analysis results manifest that as the water level in the dam body increases rapidly, the pore water pressure and displacement also increase quickly. It was found that the elevation of the water level causes an increase in pore water pressure in the dam body as well as an increase in the saturation of the dam body and decreased effective stress. It is considered that this type of dam behavior can be the cause of the reduction of strength and stiffness of the dam. Also, it is assumed that the accumulated plastic deviatoric strain due to the deformation of the dam body caused by water infiltration causes an increase in displacement. Based on these experimental results and the results of analyses of the existing reservoir safety diagnosis techniques, an improvement plan for dam safety diagnosis and evaluation criteria was proposed, and these results can be used as primary data while revising dam safety diagnosis guidelines.
