  • This study investigates the effect of GIS-integrated lessons on spatial thinking abilities and geographical skills using discourse analysis along with a comparative three-case case study method. A series of curricula were designed and implemented in an 8th grade classroom for a semester. The data collected consist of the dialogue transcripts of six consecutive GIS-integrated lessons. The transcripts were analyzed to identify the moves (speech acts) used by each student and to classify discourse content of spatial thinking and geographical skills. Based on three individual case studies, a cross-case study was performed to uncover any relationship between the phenomenon and the contexts. The empirical evidence from discourse analysis demonstrated that students were able to generate appropriate terms representative of spatial thinking and geographical skills although students appeared to possess primarily lower-order spatial abilities, followed by a moderate-level of spatial abilities. Considering that the unit was implemented in a biology class rather than a geography class the result reflected the fact that the student's spatial thinking and geographical skills were attributable to the GIS-integrated lessons. Thus, the results have a great implication for GIS-integrated lessons and geography education as an innovative tool for improving student's spatial thinking and geographical skills.

  • Since the mid 1990s, in response to rapid changes in Geography subject. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has been in central position in the UK geography curriculum. This paper discusses the roles of GIS for Geography subject curriculum and addresses main development within UK Geography curriculum since the 1990s, and investigates appropriate GIS curriculum that encourages teaching and learning of geography subject within the curriculum. To obtain these research purposes. this paper starts with the brief description of the Geography subject in the National Curriculum for England (1998) with the recent changes of Geography subject in the national exams (GSCE and A level) in the UK. This result represents a clear situation of Geography subject in the UK school education and also provides a new motivation that brings new challenges of information technology driven curriculum within the Geography subject. In turn, the interactive relationship of Geography and GIS within the current Geography curriculum is described by which the discussion of relevant GIS skills within Geography curriculum is followed. To propose the case studies that show the use of GIS for Geography education at school, Key Stages 2, 3, and 4 examples are discussed. Finally, this paper concludes with the issues that GIS benefits encourage geography teaching and learning and that potential applications can support not only the development of new teaching tools and learning strategies in geography education at schools, but also contribute to extend geographical skills and capabilities to collaborate with other subjects in school education in Korea.

  • Geography has played a role of serving as a bridge between the natural and social sciences for long time and can be an interdisciplinary framework. In this research, the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary approach centering on a geographical perspective in environmental education is presented. On this basis, a syllabus for seven 90-minute classes for the 8th grade is established under the topic of "Studying the Environment of Eighteenmile Creek." This interdisciplinary framework will be strengthened and vitalized through GIS, which plays an important role to make the geographic and environmental education more student-centered, active, and relevant to the world where we now live.

  • This paper begins with a critique that researches of geography education in Korea have not reflected the ideological debates in education and geography. The purpose of this paper is to figure implications for socially-critical geography education being studied in England as openly-ideological approach. First, ideological viewpoints of geography education was categorized through analysis of ideology in education and geography. Especially, a limit of conservative and liberal approach is indicated, socially-critical viewpoint is intrinsically justified as alternative logic. Socially-critical theorizing can change teacher's role as an agent of curriculum change and their conduct knowledge as well as geography curriculum. Second, (social) concern-oriented geography education to be more concerned to 'the social' can be realized through the third space approach and committed geography education as critical pedagogy. And, critical literacy is needed to teachers and students for practice of socially-critical geography education.

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce the current status of geography education research in South Korea. This article consists of mainly two parts: 1) source of knowledge and 2) content of knowledge in geography education research. The main academic journals are introduced as the sources of knowledge. The research trends in these journals are discussed as the content of knowledge. We classified geography education research into three types based on the framework suggested by Bednarz (2000): 1) nature of geographic knowledge, learning, and curriculum, 2) teacher education in geography, and 3) strategies in the geography classroom. Relevant research regarding each category is introduced. We hope this study serves as an access point where geography educators in South Korea and other countries facilitate interactions with each other.

  • This study aims to investigate high school students' misconceptions in the subject of Korean geography, and further to create categories to systematically understand the misconceptions. The researcher asked experienced geography teachers to produce a list of students' geographic misconceptions, and then classified the misconceptions. The following five categories were created: 1) self-centered understanding based on everyday life and experience, 2) confusion by words, 3) inappropriate applications of operational definition or geographic concepts, 4) naive inference, and 5) inflexible generalization. The validity of this classification was established through a panel discussion with experts in geography education. The misconceptions that belonged to the categories of naive inference and inflexible generalization occupied a great portion. The misconception list in this study provides a useful data-set for researchers whose interest lies in misconception, and geography teachers can devise a lesson plan that explicitly emphasizes correct geographic concepts to prevent students from establishing misconceptions.
