  • The communication model has been accepted as the basic research paradigm of cartography since Board(1967) discussed the map/model analogy. In that paradigm, the function of maps was limited to the media of communication, and the functionality of maps was extremely emphasized. Therefore the model could not play its own role under the new environments such as computer, GIS, scientific visualization. Nowadays, the model has been attacked on several grounds and several alternatives have been suggested. Among the objections raised are (1) geographic visualization in which maps are considered as the tool of scientific visualization, (2) the contributions of art which are ignored in the positivist cartographic research, and (3) deconstructionist arguments which deny the scientific epistemology of map as an objective form of knowledge and recognize the textuality of maps including their metaphorical and rhetorical nature. Since a publication by McCormick et al, the scientific visualization based on the powerful computer graphics is used in a wide context. Maps are treated as the tools of scientific visualization and emphasis is on exploration of the geographic data to gain understanding and insight in the geographic visualization processes. The research on geographic visualization have stayed in the early stage of developing the conceptual model and the basic visualization tools. But, it is expected that the geographic or visual thinking which is emphasized in the geographic visualization will contribute the reestablishment of links between cartography and geography. Also, the development of scientific visualization tools and strategies will offer the opportunities to suggest a fresh idea, to synthesize information and develop holistic approaches to geographical problems.

  • This study attempts to summarize the progress of Journalistic Cartography and to investigate the quantitative growth and the transition of the forms and contents of the media maps in Korean newspapers. And this study examines the characteristics of media maps with the technological development. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, 'Jigujeondo' in Hanseongsunbo in 1880s is the first media map in Korea. Secondly, the number of the media maps in Korean newspapers is influenced by the political and economic environments. As the time goes, the contents of the media maps have been raried. Thirdly, the representation of the media maps has their own special characteristics according to the technological developments from the handwriting to CTS.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the development of French state and the development of cartography from the sixteenth century to the seventeenth century. For this, firstly, the development of military maps as a means for the defense and expansion of territory was examined. Secondly, the development of overseas maps as an aid for colonial expansion was considered. Thirdly, the development of national maps as a representation of the state was examined. Fourthly, the development of atlas mapping as a means for establishing national consciousness was considered. And finally, the role of maps in state building was discussed.

  • With the increased availability of spatial datasets and advances in data processing technologies, the last 50 years witnessed remarkable progress in the area of cartography and geoinformatics. Researchers in Korea involved in these area, however, were exposed to the new development only recently. They are now at the stage of absorbing the works of leading countries. There have been only a small number of research papers on the area of conventional cartography land use/vover mapping, mapping of distribution of slope calsses, and topographic models. It is only recently that the research scope be extended to computer-assisted cartography and Geographic Information System (GIS). The majority of research papers have been focused on the applications of GIS. Recently, a group of researchers begin to address some of the fundamental issues in GIS such as formal models, standization, data structure, spatial analysis and networking.

  • The Carte do Cassini is the first accurate topographic map of an entire country and it influenced enormously in the development of cartography in other countries. The purpose of this paper is to examine the production process and characteristics of the Carte do Cassini, and to and the place of 'Carte de Cassini' in the development of cartography. For this, firstly, the background of French national topographic mapping is examined and scientific work of the Cassini family is resumed. Second, the map production process is considered; location and attribute data collection, copperplate printing, social and economic difficulties. Third, map characteristics such as map projection, sheet numbering system, positional accuracy, legend, typographies, and depiction of cartographic signs are explored. Finally, the influence of the Carte de Cassini on cartographic development and its historical meaning is discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of advertizing maps which were presented in one of the major daily newspapers(JoongAng Ilbo) from 1966 to 2000. The use of advertizing maps has been gradually increased year by year. Advertizing maps have appeared much frequently in spring and fall seasons, in October, and on Saturday and Wednesday. The predominance of such seasons, month, days is related to the real estate advertizement. The important categories which have been presented frequently are real estate for sale(62%), clothing sale(7%) and the image advertizement of big corporations(3%). Locator maps are preferred in the first two categories and background maps are usually used in the corporation advertizement. The symbols in the maps are different according to the custom, interest and the preference of map-producers and clients. The basic symbols for the good map, which are required in the general cartography, are scarcely shown in the advertizing maps. That is because the goal of advertizement is to appeal visually to consumers, therefore, the creativity of map-producer and the attraction of maps to draw the reader's interest are much required in the advertizing maps. It is concluded that the advertizing maps have their own values in themselves and we have to treat the journalistic cartography as a special field in cartography.

  • This study is to review division of whole numbers which is dealt in the revised elementary mathematics textbook and manual for teacher. The textbook and manual for teachers are most important documents to teach mathematics. And they are important to the would-be teachers who study the elementary mathematics with such documents. Therefore the textbook and manual for teachers should have no errors. But I found they have some errors and problems regarding division of whole numbers. In this paper, I discuss the problems and suggest the alternative plans.
