  • The alluvial deposits along meandering rivers can be used as an artificial aquifer for infiltration of river waters. Internal heterogeneity of the alluvial deposits is a prerequisite information for the development of alluvial groundwater because vortical and lateral movement of alluvial ground water depends on the internal heterogeneity The internal heterogeneity due to variations in channel behavior can be delineated using GPR survey, GPR profiles for the point bar deposits near Buyeo county reveals two different stratigraphic units: the lower inclined heterogeneous strata and the upper horizontally stratified strata. The upper unit is largely indicative of vertical accumulation by overbank floods within a floodplain, whereas the lower one represents typical point bar deposits formed by lateral accretion. The stratigraphic variation in the heterogeneity shows that GPR survey is a useful and necessary investigation method for the development of alluvial ground water.

  • We introduce a new acoustic parameter for the classification of seafloor sediments from chirp sonar acoustic profiling data. The acoustic parameter is defined as a derivative of the unwrapped phase of the Fourier transform of acoustic profiling data. Consequently, it represents the characteristics of attenuation by dissipative dispersion in sediments. And we estimated acoustic properties by geoacoustic modeling using Chirp data obtained from the different sedimentary facies. Our classification results, when compared with the results of analysis of sampled sediments, show that the acoustic parameter discriminates sedimentary facies and bottom hardness. Thus the method in this paper is expected to be an effective means of geoacoustic modeling of the seafloor.

  • In this study, vertical electrical sounding (VES) data and ordinary kriging are used to identify the alluvial depth of each area that Korea Resources Corporation (KORES) conducted groundwater survey at Miryang area in Gyeongsangnam-do and Pocheon area in Gyeonggi-do from 2003 to 2004. To verify the applicability of VES data to ordianry kriging, regression analysis of VES data versus drillhole data is conducted. Comparing the alluvial depth distributions using ordinary kriging with existing drillhole data, the result shows that the depth distributions are reasonably depicted along with the topography and the basin. So, the ordinary kriging of VES data is useful to identify the alluvial depth distributions.

  • The seismicity of the Korean Peninsula shows a very irregular pattern of strain release typical of the intraplate seismicity. The Korean Peninsula may be divided into several tectonic provinces of differing tectonics. In this analysis, seismicity parameters for each tectonic province are evaluated from historical as well as instrumental earthquake data of the Korean Peninsula to examine the differences in seismic characteristics among tectonic provinces. Statistical analysis of the earthquake data made of incomplete data before the Choseon Dynasty and complete data afterwards reveals that there exist no significant differences in seismic characteristics between the tectonic provinces. It turns out the b-value in the intensity-frequency relation for the whole peninsula is about 0.6 and the maximum earthquake is about MMI X. The results of this study may be used in the probabilistic seismic hazard analysis of the Korean Peninsula and in estimating the design earthquake in earthquake engineering.

  • The factors influencing landslide occurrence were analyzed for six points on the upper slope and the 24 points on the lower slope along a forest road around Sangsan village in Chungju, Korea, where landslides have occurred due to heavy rainfall. In terms of physico-mechanical properties of the soil layer, the lower slope seemed to loosen owing to the higher porosity, lower unit weight, and lower friction angle compared with the upper slope. With respect to topographic characteristics, the lower slope had thicker regolith, more concave profile and plan curvatures, lower slope angles, and higher topographic wetness index values than the upper slope. Therefore, all the properties (except for the slope angle) appear to make the lower slope of the forest road more vulnerable to landslides than the upper slope. Apart from the physico-mechanical and topographic characteristics, inadequate maintenance and management of drainage facilities are also considered as further major factors influencing landslide occurrence.

  • A three dimensional model for the orebody of an operating mine in Korea was constructed by using a program called '3-D Modeler'. The program allows the user to interactively construct a 3-D model of an orebody from its horizontal cross-sections. The 3-D Modeler is easily able to combine and display various spatial data for model construction. The result of modeling is strongly influenced by control points that correlate to the adjacent horizontal cross-sections. The control points are determined by comparing the geometrical shape of the adjacent cross-sections in conjunction with the geological features of the orebody. The resulting model can be evaluated in viewing the constructed object in three dimensional space or more closely evaluated by inspecting the cross-section. The model can iteratively be improved by modifying the shape of the cross-section and by using this new cross-section for the model building.

  • Structures show the phenomena of deformation and lowering of function with time-lapse by artificial environments and changes of geotechnical conditions or accumulation of initial deformation elements. This study aims the structural assessment of cultural property, Chum-Sung-Dae, located in Kyeongjucity, Korea. It was built about 1,300 years ago, and has undergone deformation and ground-subsidence with time-lapse. Non-destructive evaluation techniques were applied to the Chum-Sung-Dae, to protect it from survey. Because of this reason, 3D precise laser scanning surveying system was applied to measure the exact size of Chum-Sung-Dae, displacement and declining angles. Geophysical exploration also was applied to study the subsurface distribution of geotechnical parameters or physical properties. Natural frequencies were measured from real and model of Chum-Sung-Dae to study the dynamic characteristics of vibration and/or earthquake load and stiffness of structures.

  • A variety of geophysical well loggings have been conducted to investigate the geological characteristics for basaltic volcanic area in Jeju Island. Specially, there is no precedent case study using geophysical well loggings in Jeju Island. And so, the proper understandings for geological features of Jeju Island are the key to interpret geophysical well logs. Presently, seawater intrusion monitoring systems have been constructed for systematic development and conservation of groundwater resources. As the results of geophysical well loggings in this seawater intrusion monitoring boreholes, the responses of well logs for saturated zone have distinctly identified basalt sequences. In particular, neutron logging, gamma-gamma (density) logging, and resistivity logging have well exhibited the characteristics of lava flows and lithologic boundaries. In hyalocastite, porosity is high, and resistivity is low. Eventually, geophysical well logs are useful for securing sustainable development of groundwater in Jeju Island in that it has identified the characteristics of geological responses.

  • Geophysical surveys(self-potential, electromagnetic, electrical resistivity, and seismic refraction methods) were performed to delineate the flow channel of leachate from a AMD (acid mine drainage) by correlating the anomalies to geochemical characteristics at an abandoned mine (Jangpoong mine). The geophysical responses attempted to be correlated with water sample analysis data(pH, EC, heavy metals, ${SO_4}^{-2}$). Electrical dipole-dipole resistivity sections represent the low-resistivity zone trending northwest, which indicates the leachate flow by AMD along the contact of the mine waste rock dump and the bedrock. From the overall points of geophysical and geochemical anomalies, it is summarized that the flow channel of leachate by AMD can be successfully imaged with composite interpretations on the geophysical and geochemical studies.
