The Effects of Sociocultural Attitude toward Appearance on Perceptual, Attitudinal Body Images and Clothing Behaviors (외모에 대한 사회문화적 태도가 지각적.태도적 신체이미지와 의복행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to exam the effects of sociocultural attitude toward appearance on perceptual attitudinal body images and clothing behaviors. The research method was survey and the subjects were 447 male and female adolescents in Daejeon. The questionnaire consisted of 4 measuring instruments; sociocultural attitude toward appearance, perceptual and attitudinal body images, clothing behaviors, and subject’s demographic attributions. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's $\alpah$, x$^2$ test, t-test, factor analysis, cluster analysis, using SPSS program. The results were as follows. Adolescents had relatively high level recognition and internalization of sociocultural value toward appearance, and they perceived very thin body type as ideal body and had high interest of their appearance and weight. Sociocultural attitude toward appearance had important effects on adolescents' perceptual and attitudinal body images and clothing behaviors. The adolescents who are receptive to sociocultural value toward appearance had the tendency to distort their body as fat, showed high interest of their appearance and weight, and also showed high clothing interest & psychological dependency, clothing ostentation, and clothing conformity, but low clothing comfort than those who are not receptive to sociocultural value toward appearance.

  • The purposes of the study, based on the social comparison theory, were 1) to examine the body image and the body distortion of the late adolescent through the attitudinal and perceptual measurement of the body image and to examine the self-esteem, 2) to examine the difference of the clothing behaviors depending on the level of the body image, the body distortion and the self-esteem, 3) to examine the difference in the clothing behavior, the body image and the self-esteem according to sex. The sampling method was a convenient sampling and the subjects were 137 undergraduate students in Chungnam national University. The results of this study were as follows : The results of analysing the factors to the response of attitudinal body image emerged three factors (appearance interest, weight concern, and body satisfaction). The results of analysing the response of the clothing behavior showed four factors (fashion interest, psychological dependence of clothing, conformity to clothing, and exhibitionism of clothing). The positive group to the body image showed more interest in the fashion and had the tendency of depending on the clothing psychologically, and also showed that the group revealed much exhibitive attitude by using the clothing. The group of perceiving the face rather correctly tends to do the conformity behaviors, but the group distorting the shoulder width wider than tends to reveal more conformity behaviors. The group with the higher self-esteem had little interested in the fashion and also did the conformity behaviors slightly.

  • This study says that giving a life through the mixed power of motions which can not be fixed. It is a fundamental activity of the art of dance. In the fact, the art of dance is defined as the most instinctive and intuitive arts show that dance is a harmony of emotion on the body, thus, this view wants to discuss the relations between "sense and body". This view doesn't focus on the mere motions of dancing form, but characterizes dance as an art of another vitality through the mixture and combination of these motions. In other words, this study emphasizes that dance transcends time and space on stages, and that dance, as an expression of identity, is an art which shows a sense from inside of human. Therefore, when we want to understand the true meaning of the art of dance, we should attend what attributes of dance define it as an art and show its creative. This study, thus, seeing those attributes as the life-giving function of dance, aims to help understand the principle meaning of the art of dance that realizes creation as well as the attitudes of audience who appreciate the art of dance. And by doing so, this study contemplates how we should see the creative idea of choreography, forming sympathy and the art of dance.

A study on the self-concept and the appearance management behavior in middle school students' (중학생의 자아개념과 외모관리행동 연구)

  • This study focuses on the differences in general self-concept, academic self-concept, significant others self-concept and emotional-physical self-concept in relation to appearance management behavior. It goes on to show that appearance management behaviors such as styles in clothing, makeup, skin care, hair care, cosmetic surgery and body shaping, weight control management are strongly influenced by self-concept. Therefore, this study was carried out with the aim of providing basic understanding and information on the appearance management behavior of middle school students. It was also done in an effort to find ways of improving the self-concept of students through education as a part of the domestic science curriculum. The results obtained in this study are as follows: On average, the middle school students who took part in this study showed low self-concept and appearance management behavior which indicates a negative image of themselves. This suggests that efforts need to be made so that students can see themselves in a positive way and improve their self-concept through appearance management behavior. Middle school students with a positive self-concept try to present themselves by keeping their skin clean and their hair attractive. They express their self-esteem and personality through fashion and by keeping and maintaining their clothing, shoes and bags. They also tend to show a positive attitude towards their studies and are more likely to understand and get along with others. The students who showed positive attitudes towards their bodies and emotions have a higher interest in clothing and try to express the image that they want for themselves. They are also less likely to change their bodies unnaturally through cosmetic surgery and body shaping. Appropriate appearance management behavior can help middle school students see themselves in a more positive way.
