  • In this study, a simulation program was developed, which predicts the performance of cold-air forced circulation type air cooled showcase. The showcase has an excellent display effect in addition to preserving the grocery. In the program, the compressor was analyzed using performance data supplied by the manufacturer and the capillary tube pressure drop was analyzed using a homogeneous model. The evaporator and condenser were analyzed by dividing the heat exchangers into small elements, where energy balance and appropriate heat transfer correlations were used. A showcase model with two 3/4 HP compressors, capillary tubes of 1.6 mm inner diameter, a fin-and-tube evaporator and condenser was tested, and the results are compared with the predicted values. It is shown that both evaporation and condensation temperatures are adequately predicted by the program.

  • In evaporative cooling applications, the evaporation water is supplied usually sufficiently larger than the amount evaporated to enlarge contact surface between the water and the air. Especially in indirect evaporative coolers, however, if the evaporation water flow rate is excessively large, the evaporative cooling effect is not used for heat absorption from the hot fluid but spent to the sensible cooling of the evaporation water itself. This would result in a decrease in the cooling performance of the indirect evaporative cooler. In this study, the effects of the evaporation water flow rate on the cooling performance are investigated theoretically. The cooling process in an indirect evaporative cooler is modeled into a set of linear differential equations and solved to obtain the exact solutions to the temperatures of the hot fluid, the moist air, and the evaporation water. Based on the exact solutions, it is analyzed how much the cooling performance is affected by the evaporation water flow rate. The results show that the decrease in the cooling effectiveness is substantial even for a small flow rate of the evaporation water and the relative decrease is more serious for a high-performance evaporative cooler.

  • This study introduced a method of estimating water surface evaporation using the physical-based Penman combination equation (PCE) and the Penman wind function (PWF). A set of regression parameters in the PCE and PWF models were optimized by using the observed evaporation data for the period 2016-2017 in the Yongdam Dam watershed, and their effectiveness was explored. The estimated evaporation over the Deokyu Mountain flux tower demonstrated that the PWF method appears to have more improved results in terms of correlation, but both methods showed overestimation. Further, the PWF method was applied to the observed hydro-meteorological data on the surface of Yongdam Lake. The PWF method outperformed the PCE in the estimation of water surface evaporation in terms of goodness-of-fit measure and visual evaluation. Future studies will focus on a regionalization process which can be effective in estimating water surface evaporation for the ungauged area by linking hydrometeorological characteristics and regression parameters.

  • In this study, we experimentally investigate the performance characteristics of a high-performance summer-cooling heat pump for an R410A by applying an air-cooled-type vapor-injection (VI) cycle. The devices used for the experiment consist of a VI compressor, condenser, oil separator, plate-type heat-exchanger, economizer, evaporator, and re-cooler. The experimental conditions employed for the cooling performance were divided into three cycles. First, in Cycle A, we apply a VI cycle and with no heat exchange between the evaporator outlet refrigerant and the VI cycle suction refrigerant in the re-cooler. For Cycle B, there is heat exchange, and for Cycle C, there is neither a VI cycle nor heat exchange between the evaporator outlet refrigerant and the VI cycle suction refrigerant. From the analysis results, we observe that the performance was highest in the VI cycle with heat exchange between the evaporator outlet refrigerant and the VI cycle suction refrigerant (Cycle B), while it was lowest in Cycle C without application of the VI cycle. Moreover, the cooling coefficient of Performance ($COP_C$) averaged 3.5 in Cycle B, which was 8.6% higher than the corresponding value in Cycle A, and 33% higher than that in Cycle C.

  • A few commonly used correlation equations of the enthalpy of vaporization are reviewed and a new three-parameter correlation equation is proposed. Performance of the proposed equation is examined using the data listed in the ASHRAE table for 22 pure substance refrigerants. The new equation yields an average absolute deviation of 0.14% for 22 refrigerants, which is better than those of other equations, such as Xiang (0.18%), Major-Svoboda-Pick (0.18%), and Somayajulu equation (0.23%).

  • In this study, the cycle performance of an air conditioner with multi-indoor units is analyzed and simulated. The cycle performance could be predicted through the integration of mathematical formulation for these devices. The condenser pressure is obtained by an iteration process to match the mass flow rates of the compressor and the expansion valve and the evaporator pressure is determined by an iteration process, in which the suction super heat is tracing the targeted super heat. The required software was developed by system programming. the software algorithm is extended to predict the cycle performance of an air conditioner system with multi-indoor units, and then the numerical results are compared with experimental results. This mathematical model is validated from the result of experiments conducted on 8.3kW air conditioner. The errors in capacity, electronic power, and COP are found to be within 10% in general.

The main results were summarized as following. Frist of all, performance of refrigeration system bypassing hot-gas to evaporator inlet was affected by outdoor temperature, outlet temperature of water cooler, superheating and sub cooling degree. Thus, providing basic planning date of refrigeration system obtained through optimization of variables is expectable. Thus, providing the basic design data of refrigeration system can be offered by performing the optimization of these variables. Also, the feasibility of this refrigeration system proposed in this paper was obtained by analyzing operating characteristics of the system bypassing hot-gas to evaporator inlet.
