  • Wooden houses are classified into Traditional, Modern, Platform, Timber framing types. The most popular type is Platform framing which is come from foreign culture. The foreign and Korean tree structure tend to be incompatible with Korean culture and don't fit well with modern lifestyle. In this study, it will analyze the design characteristics of the traditional and modern wooden house to solve these problems. The design characteristics will be contributed to the development of wooden architecture which is suitable for Korean architectural style and lifestyle The research consists of space analysis, plane analysis, structural system analysis, roof type analysis, and aesthetic analysis. From the analytical results the design characteristics of traditional Hanok and modern wood structure, we propose the modular elements and the inner and outer shapes of the Korean - style wooden house.

  • The Gongchengzuofazeli, which was published in 1734, the 12th year of the Yongzheng (雍正) emperor of the Ching Dynasty, is an authoritative book that discusses the architectural technology and engineering practices at that time. Moreover, buildings constructed during the Ching Dynasty are substantially similar with the book's content. This study is important in that it is done as the first step in conducting a comparative analysis between the Korean and Chinese wood structure mechanism. First, each content of the book is examined according to the editing order. And second, the standard for division between Da-shi (大式) and Xiao-shi (小式) architecture in terms of heavy woodwork method (vol. 1~27) is redefined, from which a new organization is deduced.

  • As compared with existing center-boring timber, skin timber which be hollowed out of its considerable inner parts has some merits as like short drying time, less developed checks during drying, a advantage of lower MC (8~%), more easy injection of chemicals, a possibility of using as a lighter structural heavy timber including Hanok and heavy timber construction, a possibility for the various living necessaries and furniture materials. However, development of hybrid skin timber is required for using as a value-added materials and giving a confidence for the structural safety of skin timber to general user. Thus, improved pine skin timber (IPST) and improved larch skin timber (ILST) were manufactured using the lighter steel plate possible. And compressive capacity of improved skin timber was analyzed. From the results of this study, the following conclusions have been made: 1. Both of IPST and ILST can give a uniformity of material capacity compared with non-treated skin timber. 2. Both IPST and ILST, there was not statistical significancy among the thickness of steel plate. Therefore, it concluded that it was not necessary to use thicker steel plate. 3. There was also not statistical significancy between IPSR and ILST, so it need not to be selective about the species of improved skin timber. 4. IPST showed various failure types, but most failure types of ILST is a splitting type.

  • This study was carried out to confirm the effects of the knife-incising and kerfing pretreatment on the moisture content and surface check occurrence of Douglas-fir heavy timber. In the case of moisture content, the moisture gradient that formed in the inner part of the specimen was observed in all specimens. In addition, the moisture gradient was formed differently from the surface layer to 72 mm depending on the pretreatment conditions, and it was formed gradually in the kerfing than the knife-incising. In addition, it was found that the solid volume should be considered when measuring the average moisture content. In the case of surface check, the surface check occurrence was reduced in the knife-incising, kerfing, and the combination of knife-incising and kerfing than the control. In particular, the kerfing treatment was shown that the expansion of surface check width was effectively suppressed. In the case of knife-incising treatment, although the surface check was less than the control, the preventive effect on the surface check occurrence did not reach the level of the kerfing treatment.

Effect of End-coating Around Pith of Heavy Timbers of Red Pine and Korean Pine on High-temperature and Low-humidity Drying Characteristics (중심부분 엔드코팅처리가 국산 소나무와 잣나무 중목구조부재의 고온저습건조 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to identify the effect of end-coating around pith of heavy timbers of Red pine and Korean pine on high temperature and low humidity drying characteristics. Total drying times were 268 hours, and ranges of final moisture content was investigated that Red Pine 9.2% to 10.8% MC for square and round timber, in case of Korean Pine 15.0% to 22.0% MC for square timber, 12.8% to 20.4% MC for round timber. Moisture content distribution of Red Pine was a uniform, but part of high moisture content was found in Korean Pine. In case of Korean pine, the surface checks were occurred more severe than in case of Red pine, and end-coating treatment were investigated to be ineffective on surface check. The internal checks were only formed on the two timbers. The value of the case hardenings was investigated that the ranges 3.7% to 9.1% for Red pine. In case of Korean pine, on the other hand, the case hardenings presence a few as 20.9% to 35.8%.

  • The pre-air-drying of Korean pine before the high-temperature and low-humidity drying was shown to be effective in uniform moisture content distribution and prevention of surface check. Our results suggest that initial moisture content of the timber also plays important role in high-temperature and low-humidity drying method. The pre-air-drying also helps in the reduction of surface checks in Korean pine when compared to the Korean pine dried by only high-temperature and low-humidity. End-coating was not effective in the prevention of twist, shrinkage, case hardening and internal checks. The pre-air-drying reduces the internal tension stresses which occur during high-temperature and low-humidity drying thus decreasing case hardening and also preventing internal checks. The pre-air-drying decreases the moisture content and causes shrinkage which leads to increased twist in the Korean pine.
