Gravity field analysis and density modeling were performed to evaluate the internal state of the rock mass, which is the cause of cut slope collapse. The shape of the weathered zone and the depth of basement could be confirmed from the complete Bouguer anomaly and density model. The basement depth at the center of the cut slope calculated using the Euler deconvolution inverse method is 30 m, which is about 10 m deeper than the surrounding area. In addition, the depth of basement and the thickness of the weathered zone are similar to the boundary between low resistivity and high resistivity in dipole-dipole survey. From the study results, gravity field analysis and density modeling recognizes the internal state of the rock slope and can be used for slope safety analysis, and is particularly suitable as a method to determine the shape of weathered zones in interpreting the safety of cut slopes
In order to estimate the vertical and horizontal structural in the Yangsan fault core line (Naengsuri area, Pohang), we carried out gravity field measurements and interpretation procedures such as Euler deconvolution method and curvature analysis in addition to the forward modelling technique (i.e. IGMAS+). We found a prominent gravity difference of more than 1.5 mGal across the fault core. This indicates a distinct density difference between the western and eastern crustal area across the Yangsan fault line. Comparing this gravity field interpretation with other existent geologic and geophysical survey data (e.g. LiDAR, trenching, electric resistivity measurements), It is concluded that (1) the prominent gravity difference is caused by the density difference of about 0.1 g/㎤ between the Bulguksa Granite in the west and the Cretaceous Sandstone in the east side, (2) the fault core is elongated vertically into a depth of about 2,000 meters and extended horizontally 3,000 meters to the NNE direction from Naengsuri area. Our results present that the gravity field method is a very effective tool to estimate a three -dimensional image of the active fault core.
The determination algorithm of the location of a line source with strike and dip using the gravity gradient tensor on a single profile is proposed. We already proposed the determination of strike and dip in the previous paper and then, now we improved the algorithm to locate a line source after determining strike and dip. The strike and dip of the line source can be determined by rotating the gravity gradient tensor matrix as reducing 2 independent components. Using the ratio of remaining 2 components, the location can be determined by the least square manner of the pointing vectors on each observation point. A synthetic model is tested for proving the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.
Recently, the development of accurate gravity-meter and GPS make it possible to obtain high resolution gravity data. Though gravity data interpretation like modeling and inversion has significantly improved, gravity data processing itself has improved very little. Conventional gravity data processing removes gravity effects due to mass and height difference between base and measurement level. But, it would be a biased density model when some or whole part of anomalous bodies exist above the base level. We attempted to make a multiquadric surface of the survey area from topography with DEM (Digital Elevation Map) data. Then we constituted rectangular blocks which reflect real topography of the survey area by the multiquadric surface. Thus, we were able to carry out 3-D inversions which include information of topography. We named this technique, 3-D Gravity Terrain Inversion (3DGTI). The model test showed that the inversion model from 3DGTI made better results than conventional methods. Furthermore, the 3-dimensional model from the 3DGTI method could maintain topography and as a result, it showed more realistic geologic model. This method was also applied on real field data in Masan-Changwon area. Granitic intrusion is an important geologic characteristic in this area. This method showed more critical geological boundaries than other conventional methods. Therefore, we concluded that in the case of various rocks and rugged terrain, this new method will make better model than convention ones.

Microgravity survey was carried out in order to detect an abandoned mineshaft. We tested the feasibility of cavity detection by means of numerical modeling and applied microgravity survey to detecting an abandoned mineshaft in the vicinity of Hawson mines, Junnam. The result shows the response of mineshaft where we expected.
Although an amount of hydrocarbon has been discovered in the West Korea Bay Basin (WKBB), located in the North Korean offshore area, geophysical investigations associated with these hydrocarbon reservoirs are not permitted because of the current geopolitical situation. Interpretation of satellite derived potential field data can be alternatively used to image three-dimensional (3D) density distribution in the sedimentary basin associated with hydrocarbon deposits. We interpreted the TRIDENT satellite-derived gravity field data to provide detailed insights into the spatial distribution of sedimentary density structures in the WKBB. We used 3D forward density modeling for the interpretation that incorporated constraints from existing geological and geophysical information. The gravity data interpretation and 3D forward modeling showed that there are two modeled areas in the central subbasin that are characterized by very low density structures, with a maximum density of about $2,000kg/m^3$, indicating some type of hydrocarbon reservoir. One of the anticipated hydrocarbon reservoirs is located in the southern part of the central subbasin with a volume of about $250km^3$ at a depth of about 3,000 m in the Cretaceous/Jurassic layer. The other hydrocarbon reservoir should exist in the northern part of the central subbasin, with an average volume of about $300km^3$ at a depth of about 2,500 m. A comparison between the TRIDENT derived gravity field and the ship-based gravity field measured in 1980s shows us that our results are highly reliable and there is a very high probability to detect another low-density layer existings in the northwestern part of the central subbasin.

In this study, we performed the residual geoid modeling using the FFT and LSC methods in context of application of R-R (Remove and Restore) technique as a general technique for gravimetric geoid model in order to propose the effective way of geoid determination in Korea. For this, a number of data compiled for residual geoid modeling by the multi-band spherical FFT method with Stoke's formula and LSC method as known as statistical method. The geometric geoidal heights obtained from 503 GPS/Levelling data were used for inducing the various elements and proper computation process which should be considered for improving the accuracy of residual geoid modeling. Finally, we statistically compared the results of residual geoid heights between FFT and LSC methods and reviewed then the proper way of residual geoid modeling to the region of Korea. As the results of comparison, LSC method is not suitable for residual geoid modeling in Korea due to the noise and lack of gravity observations and the effects of local characteristics, while FFT method by applying Stokes' integral with proper cap size and modified kernel which provides the better accuracy of residual geoid heights up to 10 cm more than those of LSC method.
The geophysical characteristics and geological structure of the northeastern part of the Ulleung Basin were investigated from interpretation of geophysical data including gravity, magnetic, bathymetry data, and seismic data. Relative correction was applied to reduce errors between sets of gravity and magnetic data, obtained at different times and by different equipments. The northeastern margin of the Ulleung Basin is characterized by complicated morphology consisting of volcanic islands (Ulleungdo and Dokdo), the Dokdo seamounts, and a deep pathway (Korea Gap) with the maximum depth of -2500 m. Free-air anomalies generally reflect the topography effect. There are high anomalies over the volcanic islands and the Dokdo seamounts. Except local anomalous zones of volcanic edifices, the gradual increasing of the Bouguer anomalies from the Oki Bank toward the Ulleung Basin and the Korea Gap is related to higher mantle level and denser crust in the central of the Ulleung Basin. Complicated magnetic anomalies in the study area occur over volcanic islands and seamounts. The power spectrum analysis of the Bouguer anomalies indicates that the depth to the averaged Moho discontinuity is -16.1 km. The inversion of the Bouguer anomaly shows that the Moho depth under the Korea Gap is about -16~17 km and the Moho depths towards the Oki Bank and the northwestern part of Ulleung Island are gradually deeper. The inversion result suggests that the crust of the Ulleung Basin is thicker than normal oceanic crusts. The result of 20 gravity modeling is in good agreement with the results of the power spectrum analysis and the inversion of the Bouguer anomaly. Except the volcanic edifices, the main pattern of magnetization distribution shows lineation in NE-SW. The inversion results, the 2D gravity modeling, and the magnetization distribution support possible NE-SW spreading of the Ulleung Basin proposed by other papers.

This paper presents techniques used to model a two arm experimental robot. Both arms are compliant and the robot operates in a vertical plane and is therefore influenced by gravity. The robot is being built to study different control strategies for robots containing compliant members. The system is built with extremely flexible members. This limits the required bandwidth of the control electronics, and mimics the flexible motions that are observed for stiffer faster robots. The objective of this paper is to develop a reduced order model of the robot system and to experimentally validate the model. Validation requires that the model includes gravitational effects. Therefore, an assumed modes model is developed which facilitates modeling of gravitational effects. In order to select the order and mode shapes for the model, an analytical solution is derived for a linearized continuous model. This is compared to the assumed modes model to determine the number of mode shapes needed to model the system. The final model, which includes shortening effects, correlates very well with experimental results.
In this paper, the DDA method with a new hydro-mechanical algorithm is used to study the effect of rock discontinuities on uplift and seepage in concrete gravity dam foundations. This paper presents an alternative method of predicting uplift and seepage at the base of concrete gravity dams. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to study the importance of several parameters on dam stability such as the orientation, spacing, and location of discontinuities. The study shows that joint water flow and adverse geological conditions could result in unusual uplift at the base of concrete gravity dams, well in excess of what is predicted with the classical linear or hi-linear pressure assumption. It is shown that, in general, the DDA program with the hydro-mechanical algorithm can be used as a practical tool in the design of gravity dams built on fractured rock masses.
