This study was conducted to increase the adorption capacity of microporous carbon which is widely used as an adsorbent. After increasing the adsorption capacity of microporous carbon by heat-treatment, chromium($Cr^{+6}$) solution, which is the one of hazardous heavy metals, was selectively adsorbed on microporous carbon. Optimum temperature range for the heat-treatment of microporous carbon was $340{\sim}350^{\circ}C$, and the average specific surface area was measured as $1380m^2/g$ by BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) method. The weight loss was about 10 percents during the heating to optimum temperature. However, It became a qualitative adsorbent due to a larger specific surface area. Removal of chromium($Cr^{+6}$) in solution by heat-treated microporous carbon was successfully carried out.
In this study, alginic acid that had an high affinity for a heavy metal and was noted for biological adsorbent was modified by an oxidizer, $KMnO_4$. Chemical modification changed hydroxyl of the alginic acid into carboxyl and compare with alginic acid, modified alginic acid exhibited a characteristics that carboxyl groups are comparatively high. For the use of them as an adsorbent, beads were prepared by dropping alginic acid and modified alginic acid solution in dilute 2 wt% $CaCl_2$ solution for non water soluble. The amount of removed $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ by modified alginic acid beads showed 84.7 mg and 90.9 mg per gram of beads, respectively. And it showed the amount of adsorbed heavy metal ions 10~20% higher than that of alginic acid beads in range of pH 4~7. In particular, modified alginic acid have a good adsorption capacity for $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ by Freundlich adsorption isotherm. According to this study, it is verified that alginic acid that is a nature high molecular substance improved capacity for actual application by increased heavy metal adsorption capacity by chemical modification.
SRB(Sulfate Reducing Bacteria) converts sulfate into sulfide using an organic carbon source as the electron donor. The sulfide formed precipitates the various metals present in the AMD (Acid Mine Drainage). This study is the fundamental research on heavy metal removal from AMD using SRB. Two completely mixed anaerobic reactors were operated for cultivation of SRB at the temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ and anaerobic batch reactors were used to evaluate the effects of carbon source, COD/sulfate($SO_4^=$) ratio and alkalinity on sulfate reduction rate and heavy metal removal efficiency. AMD used in this study was characterized by low pH 3.0 and 1000mg/l of sulfate and dissolved high concentration of heavy metals such as iron, cadmium, copper, zinc and lead. It was found that glucose was an organic carbon source better than acetate as the electron donor of SRB for sulfate reduction in AMD. Amount of sulfate reduction maximized at the COD(glucose)/sulfate ratio of 0.5 in the influent and then removal efficiencies of heavy metals were 97.5% of Cu, 100% of Pb, 100% of Cr, 49% of Mn, 98% of Zn, 100% Cd and 92.4% of Fe. Although sulfate reduction results in an increase in the alkalinity of the reactor, alkalinity of 1000mg/1 (as $CaCo_3$) should be should be added continuously to the anaerobic reactor in order to remove heavy metals from AMD.
Electrokinetic remediation technique offers the opportunity to extract heavy metals from soils with high plasticity. The experiment demonstrated the applicability of electrokinetic remediation on metal-mining deposit and the decision of the enhancement method for four kinds of bench-scale studies. According to the sequential extraction of heavy metals in the "I" mining deposit, Pb and Cu were mostly associated with residual fraction and Zn and Cd were associated with water soluble and residual fraction. Therefore, removable fractions by electrokinetic technology was determined by the sum of the fraction of water soluble and exchangeable, which is Cu : 19.53%, Pb : 1.42%, Cd : 52.82%, Zn : 57.28%, respectively. When considering electrical potential, volume of effluent, soil pH, and eliminated rate of contaminant, results determined by sum of each weight were Citric aic+SDS (13) > 0.1N $HNO_3$ (10) > HAc (8) > DDW (4). Therefore, citric acid and SDS mixed solution was determined the best enhancing agent for the remediation of metal mining deposit.g deposit.
This study attempted to utilize various groundcover plants in phytoremediation, using shade plants, which often have a high shade tolerance for shade urban space. Liriope platyphylla was grown in soil containing three of heavy metals, Zn, Cd, and Pb under four different concentrations (0, 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg) to determine the heavy metal accumulation characteristics and removing from soil. Total amounts of accumulated Zn in L. platyphylla were increased in accordance with increasing elevated Zn concentrations in soil, but the difference was not significant between Zn250 and Zn500. Cd accumulation, sharply increased in Cd100 and Cd250, but was reduced in Cd500. Increased Pb concentration in soil resulted a continuous increase in the total amounts of Pb accumulated in L. platyphylla. The total content of Zn in soil decreased by almost 50% in Zn100, almost 33% in Zn250 and 20% in Zn500 through growth of L. platyphylla over a period of 7 months. In the case of Cd, the concentration in soil, was decreased with 10% in Cd100, 10% in Cd250 and 33% in Cd500 through growth of L. platyphylla over a period of 7 months. This results indicate that more Cd was removed by planting L. platyphylla, compared to Zn or Pb.
The Dalsung copper-tungsten mine in the Taegu area, Korea was closed in 1975 and may be the sources of the heavy metal contamination in the tributary system and soil-plant system due to the mine drainage derived from the mine wastes and tailings. To examine the degree and extent of heavy metal contamination in the vicinity of Dalsung mine area, stream water and soil samples were taken and analyzed for heavy metals by ICP-AES and AAS. Highly contaminated soils are found near the Lower Tunnel No.0 ranging up to $1760{\mu}g/g$ As, $2060{\mu}g/g$ Cu, $1120{\mu}g/g$ Pb and 346 ${\mu}g/g$ Zn. From the results of the sequential extraction methods for the metal speciation, the heavy metals in soils may be derived from soil parent materials and acid mine drainage. With the processes for the heavy metal removal, most of the heavy metal ions in the acid mine drainage are removed by being exchanged with Ca ions held by the bentonite, hydroxyapatite and calcium hydoxide.
The removal efficiency of heavy metals by chitosan complex isolated from biological industrial waste was investigated through laboratory experiments. The results of the study are as follows. The adsorption kinetics of heavy metals were reached the equilibrium adsorption in approximately 30 minutes and the removal efficiency were showed 70.7~97.4%. The effect of temperature on heavy metals adsorption by chitosan complex shows that as the temperature increased, the amount of heavy metals adsorption per unit weight of chitosan complex increased. The correlation between amount of heavy metals adsorption per unit weight of chitosan complex and temperature were obtained through the coefficient of determination($R^2$). $R^2$ values were 0.75(p<0.05), 0.99(p<0.05) and 0.98(p<0.05) in Hg, Mn, and Zn, respectively. The injected chitosan complex in which 0.1 g was adsorpted highly and the removal of heavy metals was found to have the best removal efficiency A linearized Freundlich equation was used to fit the acquired experimental data. As a result, Freundlich constants, the adsorption intensity(I/n) was 0.5564, 0.4074, 0.5244 on the Hg, Mn, Zn, respectively And the measure of adsorption(k) was 2.2144, 1.6963, 2.0792 on the Hg, Mn, Zn, respectively. So, it was concluded that adsorption of heavy metals by chitosan complex is effective.
In order to remediate hazardous waste site, a process of electrokinetically purging chemicals from saturated soil is examined by laboratory experiments. Electrokinetic soil remediation is one of the most promising soil decontamination processes that habe igh removal efficiency and time-effectiveness in low-permeability soils such as clay. Being combined with several mechanisms-electromigration, elec troosmosis, diffusion and electrolysis of water, electrokinetic soil processing can remove non-polar organics as well as ionic contaminants. The objectives of this study are; 1) the exploration of the feasibility of electrokinetic soil processing on the removal of heavy metals, 2) the investigation of applicability to the tailing-soils in aban doned mining area, 3) the examination of effects of soil pH and conductivity on the transport phenomena of elements in soils, and 4) the investigation of the applicability of the ionexchange membrance to the efficient collection of heavy metals removed from contaminated soils. With the result of this study, it is suggested that the removal efficiency is significantly influenced by applied voltage & current, type of purging solutions, soil pH, permeability and zeta potentials of soil. Although further study should be needed, it is possible to collect removed heavy metals with ion-exchange membrance in cathode compartment.
