  • 음성언어처리 기술의 발전과 외국어로서의 한국어 교육에 대한 관심이 커지면서 컴퓨터를 활용한 언어교육 (CALL) 기반의 한국어 학습 시스템에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 학습자의 모국어와 학습언어의 대조 분석은 양 언어의 유사점과 차이점을 찾아내어 학습자들이 무엇을 학습해야 하고, 학습자들이 보이는 오류가 어떤 것인지 판단할 수 있는 중요한 자료를 제공한다. 본 논문에서는 중국인 학습자를 위한 컴퓨터 기반 한국어 학습 시스템 개발을 위해서 선행연구의 대조분석과 실험 결과를 정리하고, 이를 토대로 중국어 학습자들이 보일 수 있는 분절음 발음 변이 양상을 예측한다.

Analysis of Phonemic Errors of Korean Learners According to Language and Proficiency (언어권과 숙달도에 따른 한국어 학습자의 발음 오류 분석 - 음소 오류를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the phonemic errors in Korean learner's spoken corpus. Through this, we tried to investigate the common errors and the errors in certain languages. The results of the analysis were as follows. First, Errors that distinguish three phonemes(plain sound, tense sound, aspiration sound) were high in all languages. In the middle phonemes, the most common errors in pronouncing 'ㅓ' in all languages. Second, the errors of each language are different. Comparing the ratios by position, Chinese characters had the most common errors with 50% in final phoneme, and the Japanese language showed equal errors in initial, middle, and end. In English, initial phoneme errors accounted for 58%. Vietnamese Learners showed intensive errors in the initial and final phoneme. Third, in addition to the phoneme errors, we also examined the allophone errors and foreign language pronunciation errors. The allophone errors are mainly concentrated in 'ㄹ', ​​and the pronunciation of the foreign language is mainly used in the source language or the native language of the learners. This paper analyzes the phoneme errors in the Learner's spoken language through the spoken corpus data with representative and annotation consistency. Through this study, we could compare the difference of phoneme errors of Main Korean learners.

A Study on the Use of adverbs by Chinese Korean learners (중국어권 한국어 학습자의 부사 사용에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, I analyzed the usage patterns of Chinese Korean learners in the Korean learners' corpus. To this purpose, I compared NIKL learners' corpus 674,553 words with the native speakers' corpus 1,055,790 words. According to the analysis, Chinese Korean learners used about 28 more adverbs per 1,000 words than native Korean in their writing. And Chinese Korean learners have either overused or underused the high frequency adverbs, the degree of overuse was stronger than underuse. And compared to native speakers, they lacked the diversity of the use of adverbs. From this corpus analysis, we were able to identify the characteristics of Chinese Korean learners' use of adverbs. Korean learners overused adverbs such as '너무, 아주'and modal adverbs '정말, 진짜'to reinforce their own discourse, and they also used a lot of mimetic adverbs due to the influence of teaching. In addition, through the analysis of the learners' corpus, we were able to identify problems with the use of adverbs by Chinese Korean learners. Chinese Korean learners should try to expand available adverbs and diversify their choice of adverbs in their composition. And they should also develop the recognition of written and spoken registers when selecting adverbs.

Perception of Korean Vowels by English and Mandarin Learners of Korean: Effects of Acoustic Similarity Between L1 and L2 Sounds and L2 Experience (영어권, 중국어권 학습자의 한국어 모음 지각 -모국어와 목표 언어 간의 음향 자질의 유사성과 한국어 경험의 효과 중심으로-)

  • This paper investigates how adult Mandarin- and English- speaking learners of Korean perceive Korean vowels, with focus on the effect of the first language (L1) and the second language (L2) acoustic relationship, as well as the influence of Korean language experience. For this study, native Mandarin and Canadian English speakers who have learned Korean as a foreign language, as well as a control group of native Korean speakers, participated in two experiments. Experiment 1 was designed to examine acoustic similarities between Korean and English vowels, as well as Korean and Mandarin vowels to predict which Korean vowels are relatively easy, or difficult for L2 learners to perceive. The linear discriminant analysis (Klecka, 1980) based on their L1-L2 acoustic similarity predicted that L2 Mandarin learners would have perceptual difficulty rankings for Korean vowels as follows: (the easiest) /i, a, e/ >> /ɨ, ʌ, o, u/ (most difficult), whereas L2 English learners would have perceptual difficulty rankings for Korean vowels as follows: (the easiest) /i, a, e, ɨ, ʌ/ >> /o, u/ (most difficult). The goal of Experiment 2 was to test how accurately L2 Mandarin and English learners perceive Korean vowels /ɨ, ʌ, o, u/ which are considered to be difficult for L2 learners. The results of a mixed-effects logistic model revealed that English listeners showed higher identification accuracy for Korean vowels than Mandarin listeners, indicating that having a larger L1 vowel inventory than the L2 facilitates L2 vowel perception. However, both groups have the same ranking of Korean vowel perceptual difficulty: ɨ > ʌ > u > o. This finding indicates that adult learners of Korean can perceive the new vowel /ɨ/, which does not exist in their L1, more accurately than the vowel /o/, which is acoustically similar to vowels in their L1, suggesting that L2 learners are more likely to establish additional phonetic categories for new vowels. In terms of the influence of experience with L2, it was found that identification accuracy increases as Korean language experience rises. In other words, the more experienced English and Mandarin learners of Korean are, the more likely they are to have better identification accuracy in Korean vowels than less experienced learners of Korean. Moreover, there is no interaction between L1 background and L2 experience, showing that identification accuracy of Korean vowels is higher as Korean language experience increases regardless of their L1 background. Overall, these findings of the two experiments demonstrated that acoustic similarity between L1 and L2 sounds using the LDA model can partially predict perceptual difficulty in L2 acquisition, indicating that other factors such as perceptual similarity between L1 and L2, the merge of Korean /o/ and /u/ may also influence their Korean vowel perception.

Development of Health Promotion Program through IUHPE - Possibilities of collaboration in East Asia - (IUHPE를 통한 건강 증진 프로그램의 발달-동아시아권의 공동연구의 가능성-)

  • This paper considers the possibilities of health promotion from the following perspectives; (1) IUHPE, (2) socio-cultural similarities, (3) action research, and (4) learning from our past. 1. The IUHPE values decentralized activities through regions, and countries such as Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China belong to NPWP region. Since IUHPE World Conference was held in Japan in 1995, Japan used to occupy more than 60% of NPWP membership. After 2001, membership is increasing rapidly in Chinese speaking sub-region. The transnational collaboration is still in its beginning phase. 2. Confucianism is one of key points. Confucian tradition should not be seen only as obstacles but as advantages to seek a form of health promotion more acceptable in East Asia. 3. Within the new public health framework, people are expected to create and live their health. However, especially in Japan, the tendency of 'lacking of face-to-face explicit interactions' is still common at health-promotion settings as well as academic settings. Therefore, the author tried participatory approaches such as asking WlFY (interactive questions designed for subjects to review their daily life and environment) and as introducing round table interactions. So far, majority of participants welcome new trials. 4. The following social phenomena are comparatively discussed after Japanese invasion and occupation of Korea ended in 1945; ·status of oriental medicine, ·separation of dispensary services, and ·health promotion specialist as a national license. In contrast to Japanese' tendency of maintaining the status quo and postponing of substantial social change, trend toward rapid and dynamic social changes are more commonly observed in Korea. Although all of above possibilities are still in their beginning stages, they are going to offer interesting directions waiting for further challenges and accompanying researches.
