Gender Differences Between the Relative Contributions of Variables to Problem Finding in Ill-structured and Moderately Structured Problem Situation (구조화 정도가 다른 문제 상황에서 문제발견에 대한 제 변인의 상대적 기여도에서의 남녀 차이)

  • The 166 elementary school students of this study were divided into four groups by gender and degree of structure in problem situations. Written instruments ascertained intelligence, conceptual knowledge, science process skills, divergent thinking, intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, personality traits, and home environment. Results were that male students scored higher on problem finding in the ill-structured than in the moderately structured problem situation. In the ill-structured problem situation, personality traits, conceptual knowledge, and intrinsic motivation contributed to the scores of male students and home environment and conceptual knowledge contributed to the scores of female students. In the moderately structured problem situation, personality traits and intrinsic motivation contributed to the scores of all students, but science process skills contributed to the scores of female students only.

Problem Solving Ability and Social Anxiety in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 문제해결능력과 사회불안)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting the social anxiety in nursing students. A total of 227 nursing students participated in the study. Data were analyzed by frequencies, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple stepwise regression with SPSS WIN 18.0. The mean scores for problem solving ability and social anxiety were at the intermediate level. Problem solving ability negatively correlated with social anxiety. The significant predictors of social anxiety included cognitive reaction within the seven problem solving ability subscales and perceived interpersonal relationship. The regression model explained 22.6% of social anxiety. As a result, to decrease social anxiety in nursing students, nursing educators should develop educational intervention programs to change cognitive distortions presented in unfamiliar social situations and improve interpersonal relationships ability.

An Analysis on the Characteristics of Problem-Finding and the Aspects of Using Science and Technology of Undergraduate Students' Convergence Problem Solving Activity (대학생들의 융합형 문제 해결 활동에서 문제발견 및 과학기술 분야 활용 양상 분석)

  • In accordance with the changing of society, remarkable increase in knowledge and information, the competencies to choose and use proper information in various domains are considered as an important skill. As one of the methods in developing these competencies, it is emphasized that a problem-based learning can make student understand and use knowledge by solving the contextualized problem. However, it is skeptical of learner's development of competencies to use knowledge by solving well-defined given problem. Therefore it is required that students be allowed to develop the competency to find problem through experiences to determine and evaluate the purpose of the problem and method. The purpose of this study is to understand how undergraduate students use science or technology in finding a problem. In this line, this study articulated four cases conducted by participants who engaged in convergence teaching-learning program. And this study investigated the participants' process of problem-finding, method and reason to apply science or technology. The results were drawn by analyzing interviews and written data, including their proposal, a poster, and final reports. Participants changed the form of problem from initial ill-structured one into a concrete one, where the participant could derive a detailed solution. Science or technology applied as the detailed example to convert problem into a concrete form, or as the analyzing tool or theoretical background of problem to make a link with other domain. Their reason of applying science or technology could be summarized in 'personal interest based on prior experience' and 'alternatives to resolve a dissatisfaction.' Based on the result, this study suggests holistic approach that is included in both intuitive thinking and logical thinking and metacognitive regulation to stimulate problem-finding in problem-based learning program.
