This research was conducted to analyze the features of the critical tensile stresses at the top and bottom of the concrete slab in the jointed concrete pavement (JCP) when subjected to both the environmental and vehicle loads. First, the stress distribution in JCP was analyzed when the system was subjected to only the environmental loads or the vehicle loads by using the finite element model of JCP. Then, the stresses were analyzed when the system was subjected to the environmental and vehicle loads at the same time. From this study, it was found that the critical tensile stresses at the slab bottom under the vehicle loads were almost constant regardless of the loading positions once the loads were applied at the positions having some distance from the transverse joint. The critical tensile stresses at the slab bottom could be obtained using the model consisting of normal springs for underlying layers by adding the critical stresses due to the environmental loads and the vehicle loads for the curled-down slab, and by subtracting the critical stress due to the environmental loads from that due to the vehicle loads for the curled-up slab. The critical tensile stresses at the top of the slab could be obtained using the model consisting of tensionless springs for underlying layers by adding the critical stress due to the environmental loads and the stress at the middle of the slab under the vehicle loads applied at the joint for the curled-up slab. An alternative to obtain the critical stresses at the top of the slab for the curled-up slab was to use the critical stresses under only the environmental loads obtained from the model having normal springs for underlying layers.
Curling is caused by the difference in the temperature and humidity by the depth of the slab in Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement. Slab curvature shape and size change due to curling exert a profound influence on the internal stress and roughness of the pavement, affecting structural and functional performance of the pavement. Direct measurement of the slab curvature entails many problems. Many measuring instruments have to be installed at the early-stage of the pavement construction, and the behavior of the slab curvature needs to be measured accurately from the early-stage. Moreover, the cost and technical difficulty are very formidable to measure the slab curvature. This study develops a measurement method for slab curvature in jointed concrete pavement at any given time by applying Power Spectrum Density Analysis and Inverse Fast Fourier Transformation to the profile data, that can be easily obtained at the construction field site. The effectiveness of this developed method is verified by measuring the profile data of the test road of jointed concrete pavement at an inland central expressway by the hour and by examining the result of extracting the slab curvature shape from this profile data. Additionally, the profile data of CRCP(Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement) sections on the same expressway were obtained and analyzed at the same time. The validity of the method developed for the slab curvature shape extraction is verified by comparing the result from the analysis of the profile data of CRCP sections with that from the analysis of the prof1Ie data of jointed concrete pavement sections.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of various joint sealant on reducing the reflection cracking of asphalt concrete overlay on cement concrete pavement. The test method used was an accelerated reflection cracking test in shear mode, which was developed for evaluation of reflection cracking resistance of overlaid asphalt concrete in laboratory. The test results showed that use of joint sealants resulted in a significant reduction of reflection cracking. When sealant E was used, the fatigue life was the highest, with relatively larger horizontal deformation. When Sealant B was used, the dynamic stability was the highest with the smallest horizontal deformation. In general, the greater the tensile strength of sealant, the better the crack resistance of the mixture.
Field and laboratory investigations were performed for concrete pavement of the Yeongdong Expressway located in western part of the Kangwon Province where lots of the substantially large spatting distresses were found. The spatting distresses were investigated to the naked eye in the field, and splitting tensile strength, air void, and neutralization tests were performed for the cores obtained from the pavement. In addition, load transfers at joints and dynamic bearing capacities at slab centers were measured to identify the lowering of the structural capability of the pavement. It was judged that the investigated concrete slabs were affected by freezing and thawing action because the air voids of the cores were substantially low. Therefore, it was concluded that the low air voids affected the lots of the large spatting distress in the pavement located in the region of cold winter.
Dowel bars in the jointed concrete pavement are used to both provide load transfer across pavements joints and prevent the joint faulting leading to longer service life. On the contrary, the misplacement of dowel bar can provide negative results including the joint freezing(locking) that may cause the joint spatting and unexpected mid-slab cracking. The dowel bar can be placed using the assembly or dowel bar inserter (DBI) during the concrete pavement construction. In the domestic practice of the concrete pavement construction, the dowel bar is placed using the assembly method. This study primarily focuses on the comparison of these two dowel placement methods using the field data from the KHC test road in which both dowel placement methods have been applied to a certain length of the concrete pavement. The field data regarding the alignment of the dowel bars placed by both methods was collected using MIT-SCAN2, a nondestructive measuring equipment, and processed to compute Joint Score and Running Ave. Joint Score which are used as indicators of the dowel bar performance. The comparison of the methods for the dowel bar placement using these indicators shows that the DBI method provided much better alignment of the dowel bars reducing the risk of joint freezing than the assembly method. In order to improve the quality of the dowel bar placement using the assembly method, the current weak points of the assembly method including the fabrication, storage, and installation of dowel bar assembly were investigated and the solution was suggested. The improved dowel bar sets based on the suggested solution have been applied to an actual practice of the concrete pavement construction. The field data shows that the improved assembly method suggested in this study can highly reduce the risk of joint freezing.

This paper presents a mathematical model derived from the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity to rationally evaluate the shear friction strength of concrete interfaces with a construction joint. The upper limit of the shear friction strength was formulated from the limit state of concrete crushing failure on the strut-and-tie action along the construction joints to avoid overestimating the shear transfer capacity of a transverse reinforcement with a high clamping force. The present model approach proposed that the cohesion and coefficient of friction of concrete can be set to be $0.27(f_{ck})^{0.65}$ and 0.95, respectively, for rough construction joints and $0.11(f_{ck})^{0.65}$ and 0.64, respectively, for smooth ones, where $f_{ck}$ is the compressive strength of concrete. From the comparisons with 155 data compiled from the available literature, the proposed model gave lower values of standard deviation and coefficient of variation of the ratios between predictions and experiments than AASHTO and fib 2010 equations, indicating that the proposed model has consistent trends with test results, unlike the significant underestimation results of such code equations in evaluating the shear friction strength.

The primary objective of this study was to estimate the deterioration degree of jointed concrete pavement which was major concrete pavement type in Korea. First of all, visual survey of concrete pavement was performed to observe deterioration types. In the result of visual survey, the majority of concrete pavement deterioration was investigated in joint area. It is appeared that most of the distresses are durability cracking and joint distress. Second, concrete core specimens were taken from eight locations including good section (4 locations) and bad section (4 locations) based on visual survey. The deterioration reasons of concrete pavement were analyzed with ultrasonic pulse velocity test, splitting tensile strength test, and image analysis for concrete core specimens. Among the image analysis test result for 21 concrete core specimens, only two specimens satisfied the Kansas DOT criteria of spacing factor, $250\;{\mu}m$, and the remains of 19 specimens were estimated to be above $250\;{\mu}m$. The durability factor of concrete was estimated very low. As a result, it was analyzed that the main deterioration reason of the deteriorated jointed concrete pavement was to be freezing and thawing damages.
A jointed plain concrete pavement(JPCP) slab was tested in Incheon International Airport construction work to study the early-age property of JPCP slab. The temperature and moisture data of the concrete slab had been collected and analyzed. The setting time of the concrete was decided by using the maturity method. The initial setting time is 2 hours 40 minutes after the placement of the slab. The investigation and analysis of the slab began from the initial setting time. The strains of different locations and different depths of the slab show different variation character.
