  • The purpose of this study was to examine the science writing and perception of students who experienced the argument-based claim and evidence writing approach. One hundred and eight grade 11 students were assigned to an experimental group, while 99 grade 12 students were assigned to a comparative group in their earth science classes. Students' science writings on two science topics were scored using an analytic rubric developed in this study. The comparison of experimental and comparative groups in science writing was carried out using an independent two samples t-test. Students' perception on the instruction was examined using an open-ended survey. Science writing by the experimental group scored significantly higher than that by the comparative group, except for the big idea of 'green energy'. For six concepts in 'green energy' and four concepts in 'plate tectonics, there were more students in the experimental group than the comparative group who indicated them in their science writing. Students' perception on the instruction was positive in that they mentioned planning and conducting inquiry, citing of claims and evidence, and developing inquiry questions were helpful in science learning. The results of this study imply that the argument-based claim and evidence writing approach should be implemented in science classrooms for students to develop a conceptual framework for science.

  • This study was conducted to identify trends and knowledge structures associated with recent trends in Korean tourism from 2010 to 2015 using keyword data. To accomplish this, we constructed a network using keywords extracted from KCI journals. We then made a matrix describing the relationships between rows as papers and columns as keywords. A keyword network showed the connectivity of papers that have included one or more of the same keywords. Major keywords were then extracted using the cosine similarity between co-occurring keywords and components were analyzed to understand research trends and knowledge structure. The results revealed that subjects of tourism research have changed rapidly and variously. A few topics related to 'organization-employee' were major trends for several years, but intrinsic and extrinsic factors have been further subdivided and employees of specific fields have been targeted as subjects of research. Component analysis is useful for analyzing concrete research topics and the relationships between them. The results of this study will be useful for researchers attempting to identify new topics.

  • Researches in text categorization have been confined to whole-document-level classification, probably due to lacks of full-text test collections. However, full-length documents availably today in large quantities pose renewed interests in text classification. A document is usually written in an organized structure to present its main topic(s). This structure can be expressed as a sequence of sub-topic text blocks, or passages. In order to reflect the sub-topic structure of a document, we propose a new passage-level or passage-based text categorization model, which segments a test document into several Passages, assigns categories to each passage, and merges passage categories to document categories. Compared with traditional document-level categorization, two additional steps, passage splitting and category merging, are required in this model. By using four subsets of Routers text categorization test collection and a full-text test collection of which documents are varying from tens of kilobytes to hundreds, we evaluated the proposed model, especially the effectiveness of various passage types and the importance of passage location in category merging. Our results show simple windows are best for all test collections tested in these experiments. We also found that passages have different degrees of contribution to main topic(s), depending on their location in the test document.

  • This paper aims at examining how sijo works, including ancient sijo works, those published before the 1960s, those written by China-residing Koreans, and those published in the 2000s, convey the poetic meaning in terms of sentence structure. Firstly, ancient sijo works, those published before the 1960s, and those written by China-residing Koreans, have sentences. whose meaning the readers can easily grasp, with simple structures and little rhetoric words. But moderns works published In the 2000s (modern sijo works after) are mingled with too many rhetoric expressions, sometimes misused. Secondly, ancient sijo works, those published before the 1960s, and those written by China-residing Koreans, having a clarified subject-verb context. are easily understood by the readers. But, in modern sijo works, there are many cases with an unclarified subject-verb context and redundant rhetoric words, which will cause misunderstanding of the meaning of the work. Thirdly, in ancient sijo works. those published before the 1960s and those written by China-residing Koreans, each of the three statements (called in) in a stanza is separate from the others in context. But, in some modern sijo works, the first and second statements (called chojang and jungjang) fall into just rhetoric parts for the last statement (called jongjang), and each of them is not read as an independent statement. Fourthly, there are some cases whose forms are distant from those of siio works. but are written in three statements like traditional sijo works. Regular poems, though written in regular rhythm, should be also acoustically regular. Sijo works should be easily understood when recited. If not, they are basically far from sijo works. If modern sijo works should overcome their easy expressions and simplicity of themes, they should be composed through using not complicated sentence structures but brand-new metaphors, clear images, and fresh themes.

  • With the explosive growth of information about books, there is a growing number of customers who find it difficult to pick a book. Against the backdrop, the importance of a book recommendation system becomes greater, through which appropriate information about books could be offered then to encourage customers to buy a book in the end. However, existing recommendation systems based on the bibliographical information or user data reveal the reliability issue found in their recommendation results. This is why it is necessary to reflect semantic information extracted from the texts of a book's main body in a recommendation system. Accordingly, this paper suggests a method for extracting keywords from the main body of novels, as a preceding research, by using TF-IDF method as well as the text structure. To this end, the texts of 100 novels have been collected then to divide them into four structural elements of preface, dialogue, non-dialogue and closing. Then, the TF-IDF weight of each keyword has been calculated. The calculation results show that the extraction accuracy of keywords improves by 42.1% in performance when more weight is given to dialogue while including preface and closing instead of using just the main body.

  • This study aims to investigate Korean fashion-related research trends and knowledge structures on digital transformation through information-based approaches. Accordingly, we first identified the current status of the relevant research in Korean academic literature by year and journal; subsequently, we derived key research topics through network analysis, and then analyzed major research trends and knowledge structures by time. From 2010 to 2020, we collected 159 studies published on Korean academic platforms, cleansed data through Python 3.7, and measured centrality and network implementation through NodeXL 1.0.1. The results are as follows: first, related research has been actively conducted since 2016, mainly concentrated in clothing and art areas. Second, the online platform, AR/VR, appeared as the most frequently mentioned topic, and consumer psychological analysis, marketing strategy suggestion, and case analysis were used as the main research methods. Through clustering, major research contents for each sub-major of clothing were derived. Third, major subject by period was considered, which has, over time, changed from consumer-centered research to strategy suggestion, and design development research of platforms or services. This study contributes to enhancing insight into the fashion field on digital transformation, and can be used as a basic research to design research on related topics.

  • Structured abstracts have been regarded as an essential information factor to represent topics of journal articles. This study aims to provide an unconventional view to utilize structured abstracts with the analysis on sub fields of a structured abstract in depth. In this study, a structured abstract was segmented into four fields, namely, purpose, design, findings, and values/implications. Each field was compared in the performance analysis of document clustering. In result, the purpose statement of an abstract affected on the performance of journal article clustering more than any other fields. Furthermore, certain types of keywords were identified to be excluded in the document clustering to improve clustering performance, especially by Within group average clustering method. These keywords had stronger relationship to a specific abstract field such as research design than the topic of an article.

  • In early year 2003, the previous Urban Planning Law and National Land Use Management Law were abolished and integrated into the Law regarding National Land Planning and Land Use Management. Accordingly, previous Urban Planning Information System is reformed into National Land Use Information System. This paper intends to develop indexes supporting decision-making process and to construct theme map using digital map that can be utilized for the National Land Use Information System. As a base for the index development, necessary database(DB) was established by utilizing the socio-economic information of towns and villages in Busan and a layer of public facilities. Based on the DB, multivariate analyses were performed to examine and analyze the spatial structure of Busan. It was then expressed and constructed as a theme map. The facility theme map was also constructed based on a layer of public facilities and the shortest distance between towns and villages.
