  • This study was carried out to develop environmental friendly control for major diseases and pests on Boxthorn (Lycium chinense Mill.). Outbreak of Eighteen diseases and pests were found at the Boxthorn organic yards in Chung-nam province. Among them Powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni de Cand.), Hypophyllous mold (Pseudocercospora chengtuensis (Tai)), Western flower trips (Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande)), Green peach aphid (Myzus pericae (Sulzer)) and Corn earworm (Helicoverpa armigera) needed to be controled by environmental friendly methods for high fruit yield of organic Boxthorn. In summer(Jun) test Bacilus subtilis QST 713 wettable powder and Sulfur wettable powder were effective and in autumn (Sep.) test Sulfur, Copper hydroxide and Paraffinic oil were relatively effective in Powdery mildew. In Hypophyllous mold control test Paraffinic oil and Bacilus subtilis GB - 0365 were effective with above 70% control value. And it was possible to control Western flower trips by natural enemy (Orius laevigatus) by 80% control value. Corn earworm was possible to control by Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. aizawai GB413 flowable and Bacillus thuringiensis aizawa 0423 wettable powder application above 70%. And Green peach aphid was controllable with environmental friendly materials, such as, Bacillus subtilis (Seoncho), Bacillus subtilis (Jinsami) above 80% and Ginkgo nut extract above 70% control value.

  • This was investigated on the major issues and research trends regarding the heat-treatment of woods through literature reviews. The principal heat-treatment technologies utilized for industrial purposes include the Plato-process (Netherlands), the Retification process (France), the OHT-process (Germany), and the Thermowood Process (Finland). Factors that mainly influence the heat-treatment process are the wood species, process temperature, processing time, and the heating medium (air, steam, vacuum, N2, oil, etc.). Researches on investigating the optimal conditions with these process conditions being the variables stand as the mainstream. Heat-treated woods present dimensional stability improvement, but mass loss and strength reduction, a wide variations for decaying inhibition, and insufficient resistance against mold, wood borer, and termites. For further improvement in respects of durability or resistance to biological degradation, necessity to search for more suitable heat treatment process and processing conditions fit for each wood species has been suggested. Exploiting new ways to utilize heat-treated wood and extending its range of use have been considered to be important matters that need more effort put into for the sustainable and sound environment as well as saving the wood resources.

  • Fungus gnats are usually found in mushroom farm and have recently become important pest because they can cause severe damage and reduce the production on shiitake mushroom. Usually shiitake mushrooms are cultivated on both oak bed logs and in the artificial sawdust beds in greenhouses. Using yellow sticky trap, the dipteran species in shiitake mushroom farm were collected from May to September in Kyonggi-do and Chungcheong-do in 2013. To identify the main species of fungus gnat on the shiitake farm in Korea, the collected samples were determined the sequence of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) by DNA barcoding. The phylogeny based on maximum likelihood analyses from COI sequence showed that Bradysia difformis and B. alpicola were main species of shiitake bed log and Scatopsidae sp. and B. difformis were dominant species of sawdust beds.

  • The ovipositional preferences of Holotrichia morosa were investigated to defermine several environmental factors related to its incidence in ginseng fields. H. moroia paid no eggs in naked soil without ground color plants, and shouted ovipositional preference among weed plants in the order to Aurmisin prinrcps var oripntnlis, Epigrren canadensis Diuitarin sanguinalis, and Porttulaca oleracea. More oviposition was observed in the denser vegetation of D. sanguinalis and in soft soil. The egg-laying females were seldom attracted to fresh rice straw mulched on soil surface or decayred rite straw mixed into soil. The number of eggs laid by a female decreased considerably when the soil moisture content was below 5% or above 35%.

  • The relative toxicity of some of the insecticides which have been used for the control of paddy rice insect pests in Korea was evaluated in the laboratory with the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens, and a predaceous paddy spider Pirata subpiraticus. In order of the relative toxicity (LD5O value to spider/LD50 value to BPH) were PAP (0.4), MPP(0.1), MEP(1.8), diazinon(2.8), carbofuran(7.5), NAC(11.3), BPMC(17.5), Pyridaphenthion(35.9) and MIPC(65.7). MIPC and Pyridaphenthion were considered as having the desirable selective toxicity for the spider and the BPH.

  • Phytoseiid mites are important predators of spider mites, rust mites and many of insect pests as well. From two-year (2001-2002) survey of apple orchards in Kyoungbuk and Suwon area, 13 species of phytoseiids, 12 species of the genus Amblyseius and one species of the genus Typhlodromus were found. Among them, Amblyseius womersleyi was the most dominant followed by A. rademacheri, A. orientalis, and A. makuwa. Amblyseius rademacheri and A. makuwa were mainly found from ground vegetation. Keys to genera and species were presented with some pictorial details and ecological notes of each species. Further discussion on systematics of the family Phytoseiidae and use in apple IPM were suggested.

  • Seven organophosphorus compounds and three carbamates of some monoterpenoids were synthesized and tested for insecticidal activity to five insects, brown plant happer (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens), green peach aphid (GPA, Myzus persicae), diamond bark moth (DBM, Plutella xylostella), tobacco cut worm (TCW, Spodoptera litura), and two spotted spider mite (TSSM, Tetranychus urticae). With the administration of 500 mg/l concentration thiophosphates of carveol and geraniol showed motality of from 95% to 100% to BPH and DBM. On the other hand, phosphates of menthol, thymol, and borneol had also good to moderate activity to BPH and TSSM insects at the same concentration.

  • We surveyed natural enemies of Pachynematus itoi Okutani, newly recorded sawfly pest of Larix leptolepis, and investigated their occurrence and life cycle at Cheolwon and Taebaek, Gangwon Province in 2006~2007. Endasys liaoningensis was identified as main natural enemy of P. itoi Okutani. Parasitism of E. liaoningensiswas was 42%. Emergence period of E. liaoningensis was from May to September, and the peak of emergence was from 21th May to 20th June. It was suggested that the occurrence number and period of E. liaoningensis were quite closely relative to those of host, P. itoi.

  • Two hymenopteran egg parasitoid species, Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Scelionidae) and Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Encyrtidae), were emerged from eggs of bean bug, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg (Heteroptera: Alydidae). The former parasitoid is first recorded in Korea. Brief morphological and biological characteristics, and parasitism on R. clavatus eggs are described.

  • It has been documented that the resistance to planthoppers is attributed to the feeding preference of the insects. This might be related to difference in the amount of feeding plant sap between resistant and susceptible hosts. In this aspect, this study was conducted to verify it and to develop an effective screening method for resistance to planthoppers by tracer technique. An effective P-32 labelling of rice seedlings at $2\~3$ leaf stage was dipping the roots in concentration of $0.1{\mu}Ci/ml$ solution for 48 hours. Radioactivity was significantly higher in planthopers fed on susceptible variety for 48 hours as compared to those fed on resistant variety. Radioactivity of adults was higher than that of nymphs and also higher in female than male. The results were highly correlated to that indicated by the feeding preference of the insects and therefore, considered to be valid for a screening technique.
