Prediction of Formability of Aluminum Alloy 5454 Sheet (알루미늄 5454 합금 판재의 성형성 예측)

  • In the automobile industry, reducing the weight is the most important objective for reducing air pollution and improving the fuel efficiency. For this reason, the application of aluminum sheets is increasing. When the sheets are applied to the automobile, using inappropriate variables for the material, product design, and press processing can generate tearing, wrinkling, and spring-back problems, which are the main types of failure in the manufacturing process. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce these failures by harmonizing the many variables and strictly managing the processes. In this research, we study the theoretical plasticity instability of Al5454 and obtain the forming limit diagram (FLD) using MATLAB. Moreover, we compare the theoretical FLD with an experimental FLD obtained from a stretching test.

  • This paper presents possible defects when welded blank hydroforming and focus on wrinkling, and the die design to prevent this defect An explicit finite element code, PAM-STAMP, is used to simulate welded blank hydroforming process. The numerical results are compared to the experimental results in the aspect of deformed shape. An automobile subframe is taken as an example to carry out finite element analysis.

  • An analysis for the prediction of wrinkling formation in curved sheets during metal froming is presented. We construct "Wrinkling Limit diagram"(WLD) which represent the combinations of the critical principal stresses for wrinkling formation in curved sheet elements subjected to biaxial plane stress. Here the scheme of plastic bifurcation theory for thin shells based on the Donnell-Mushtari-Vlasov shell theory is used. In this study, the effects of the material variables (yield stress, plastic hardening coefficient, plastic anisotropic parameter, and so on) and sheet geometry on the critical conditions for wrinkling is carried out numerically.merically.

  • Recently, Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) sheet metal has been widely used to improve lightweight structures in the automobile industry. Because UHSS sheets have high strength but low elongation, it is difficult to control winkle and thinning for complex shaped products. The draw beads on die surface were introduced in this study to reduce wrinkle and thinning. The positions and strength values of draw beads were selected as design variables and optimized using finite element analysis. The beads positions and strength of a mold for B-pillar part were designed with the proposed optimization method. The accuracy of die design from optimization was verified by comparing with the results from 3-D scanned geometry.

  • In Korean tilting trains, honeycomb composite panels are used for high speed and light weight. The side wall of a tilting train consists of an aluminum honeycomb coated with carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy skin and a nomex honeycomb panel as the main structure, with glass wool inserted between the panels. In this study, based on ASTM E2249-02, we measure the intensity sound transmission loss (TL) of the honeycomb composite panels. Using mass law deviation (MLD), we estimate the sound insulation performance of the honeycomb composite panels in terms of their weight and explore the feasibility of substituting a conventional corrugated steel panel. The transmission-loss data of the honeycomb composite panels obtained in the study will be used to establish noise-reduction measures for train compartments.

  • A Goryeo-era mother-of-pearl-inlaid incense box in the collection of the National Museum of Korea, a major example of Goryeo dynasty cultural heritage, presents a comprehensive view of the production techniques and aesthetic expressions of its time. This study investigated the type of wood and the techniques used to make the framework of the box, knowledge that was necessary for its restoration. It also examined anatomical characteristics of the shell providing the mother-of-pearl. The incense box was found to be made of cedar, which suggests that there was trade in cedar with Japan. A band was attached to the lower portion of the lid by applying what the author describes as a "wrinkle-bending" technique at the corners. Wooden pegs were used to combine the top and side panels, probably for more efficient use of the thin wooden boards. The investigation of the anatomical features of the mother-of-pearl inlay identified a laminated structure of thin plates. These features are observed in certain shellfish, and further study would be required to accurately identify the type of shell.

  • Demand for ultra-thin materials is increasing due to their light-weight and versatile properties. In this work, the formability of the ultra-thin stainless steel sheets of various thicknesses in the incremental sheet forming (ISF) process is investigated. The effects of the thickness on formability were evaluated with forming experiments of the truncated cone shape with 10° intervals. As the thickness of the material decreased, the maximum forming angle decreased and wrinkles also occurred quickly. The maximum forming angles in the truncated cone shape without the wrinkles for the thickness of 0.05 mm, 0.08 mm, and 0.1mm were 30°, 40°, and 50°, respectively. Wrinkles occurred in a twisted shape along the moving direction of the tool. As the material thickness increased, the size of the wrinkles increased.

  • Recently, research on the development of lightweight vehicle bodies is increasing continuously as a response to fuel economy regulations. To reduce the weight of a vehicle body, a conventional steel plate has been substituted by light weight material with high specific strength and the jointing of multi-materials is generally applied. On the other hand, the customer's demand for safety and emotional quality in NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, a light weight with proper strength and NVH quality is needed. In the view of light weighting and NVH quality, the application of a vibration proof steel plate can be an effective solution but the formability of a sandwich panel is different with a conventional steel sheet. Therefore, careful analysis of formability is required. This study aims to characterize the formability of a sandwich high-strength steel plate. The high-strength steel plates of different thicknesses with resistance spot welding and sealer bonding were analyzed using forming limits diagram through a cup drawing test.

A Study on the Manufacturing Technique of Goryeo Lacquered Box (고려 나전국화넝쿨무늬합의 제작기법 연구)

  • In this paper, we present a nondestructive analysis using X-ray and microscopic investigation to detect the structure, manufacturing technique and preservation status of the Goryeo lacquered box Inlaid with Mother-of-pearl Chrysanthemum and Scroll Design (Goryeo Lacquered Box). We confirm that the Goryeo Lacquered Box consists of the soft wood as the basic material. The soft wood was coated with textile and then lacquered. The box structure of the Goryeo Lacquered Box was formed of wooden boards with wood plants added to the side, after processing into a trefoil-shaped. The wooden sides of the Goryeo Lacquered Box were cut at regular intervals for easier processing into a curved shape. Moter-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, and metal wire were used to decorate the surface. mother-of pearl was the cutting processing, and tortoiseshell was used for back coloring. The metal line was constructed using one line and twist line.
