Pipe-rack structures supporting high temperature and pressure are of great importance to ensure the safety of the operation of the plants. If some damage occurred in the pipe-rack structure, the facilities not only bring damage to the commercial property, but also result in economic losses. Specially, since pipe-rack structures are exposed to various environmental conditions, it is essential to evaluate the thermal behavior of the structure caused by environmental conditions for the appropriate design and maintenance of the pipe-rack structure. Thus, based on a selected, typical pipe-rack structure, a thermal-stress coupled analysis was conducted to evaluate the temperature distributions and thermal stresses of the structure. For this, this study accounted for the operating condition of the pipe and the effect of environmental conditions, Yeosu in South Korea and Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. The results of the study showed the need for accounting for a variance in the environmental factors to evaluate the thermal behavior of the pipe-rack structure along with the working condition of pipe.

Anisotropic/heterogeneous rock mass shows various deformation behavior types due to tunnelling because deformation behavior is largely controlled by the spacial characteristics of geological factors such as faults, joints and fractured zone in rock mass. In this paper 2-dimensional numerical analysis on the several influencing factors is performed considering fractured zone located near tunnel. This numerical analysis shows that deformation behavior of tunnel are very different according to the width and the location of fractured zone and supper method. However, 3-dimensional analysis is necessary to consider 3-dimensional geometrical characteristics sufficiently since discontinuity and fractured zone have 3-dimensional geometry. Also flexible design/construction guidelines for tunnelling are required to cope with uncertain ground condition and circumstance for technically safe and economic tunnel construction.

The purpose of this research is to develop the model for analyzing the hydraulic behavior of off-stream reservoir whose purpose is to reduce a peak flood. When a flood occurs in river, off-stream reservoir has a capability of sharing a part of peak flood. It is accomplished by flowing over a off-line weir that is built by lowering a portion of bank and connecting river with off-line reservoir. Since flood control depends on river elevation, characteristics of off-line weir (elevation, length, position et al.) and reservoir capacities, an integrated model linking the one dimensional unsteady river flow model, off-line weir model and two dimensional unsteady flood model is developed to analyze the behavior of off-stream reservoir and off-line weir. The results show that a flood control capability of off-stream reservoir strongly depends on facilities of off-line weir and storage capacity of offstream reservoir.

Structural performance and serviceability of precast deck system are mostly determined by connection details between precast decks. Particularly, since the bridge deck is under repeated loads such as traffic loads, fatigue behavior and performance of joints should be investigated. In this study, a two-girder continuous composite bridge specimen was fabricated using the asymmetric ribbed loop joints, and static and fatigue load tests were conducted to evaluate the structural behavior and the crack pattern of the bridge deck. From the test results, the proposed precast deck system resulted in sufficient fatigue performance and failure strength. Therefore, the proposed precast deck system can be applied to the connection part of precast decks effectively.

Road pavements consist of layered structure and each layer is made of various materials. The load responses of pavement structures are very sensitive to properties of subbase materials. Successful pavement design, therefore, depends on the method and the accuracy of measuring material properties, and it requires realistic description of the behavior of layered materials. Resilient modulus ($M_R$) is widely used properties representing pavement structure materials. In this study, we collected data for mechanical characteristics of subbase materials that were used in domestic construction and adopted them to form a constitutive equation of subbase $M_R$ value. Proposed model was evaluated through the finite element analysis.
Boron nitride nanotubes and carbon nanotubes are the most representative one-dimensional nanostructures, and have received great attention as reinforcement for multifunctional composites for their excellent physical properties. The two nanotubes have similar excellent mechanical stiffness, strength, and heat conduction properties. Therefore, the reinforcing effect of these two nanotubes is greatly influenced by the properties of their interface with the polymer matrix. In this paper, recent comparative studies on the reinforcing effect of boron nitride nanotubes and carbon nanotubes through experimental pull-out test and in-silico simulation are summarized. In addition, the conflicting aspect of the two different nanotubes with structural defects in their side wall is discussed on the viscoelastic damping performance of nanocomposites.

Urban railroad vehicles carry many passengers and are the core of an urban railroad transportation system. Therefore, the dynamic performance of the vehicle must be ensured. Dynamic behaviors such as the vibration and ride comfort of railway vehicles are affected by the structure of the suspension system. We analyzed the dynamic behavior of a railway vehicle according to the suspension system of an urban railway vehicle, which is mainly operated in Korea. For two types of vehicles with different suspension structures, the vibration of the vehicles on railway tracks was measured, and dynamic behavior characteristics such as vibration, ride, and vibration reduction rate were analyzed. The result of the test shows that the vibration performance of the body is superior to that of B-bogie in the lateral direction and that of A-bogie in the vertical direction. Overall, the ride quality of the A-bogie car is superior to that of B-bogie. When analyzing the vibration attenuation rate of primary suspension system, the vibration attenuation performance of B-bogie with coil spring was superior to that of A-bogie with a conical rubber spring. The secondary suspension system has better vibration attenuation performance for A-bogie with air springs compared to coil springs.

In recent years, non-welded building hardware has been installed by bolt assembly is used. The non-welded building hardware method can reduce accidents caused by welding, and can be constructed by bolt assembly, which can reduce labor costs and shorten the construction period. However, there is a need for a method to compensate for the occurrence of buckling at the time of construction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior of joints between steel pipe and fastener and to evaluate the behavior of joints of non-welded and welded hardware frame. As a result, it was found that the foundation steel structure without welded joints was deformed to a rotation angle of member much larger than the allowable interlayer displacement angle 0.01 to 0.02 required according to the seismic load rating in the seismic load resistance system.
In blasting demolition, a method would be chosen among many depends on shape and system of a structure and its surround. To demolish using explosives a structure, which is asymmetric and with high aspect ratio, pre-weakening, explosive locations, detonating delay, and surround conditions are needed to be considered in front to design blasting demolition plan. In this study, to over turn asymmetric and high aspect ratio structure in safe, a simulation using a software named Extreme Loadings for Structures, ELS, had performed. In results, it is achieved optimized pre-weakening shapes and locations, which prevent kick back motion of the structure when it collapse, by analyzing moment distribution caused by pre-weakening. And of structural collapse and by minimizing asymmetric structure's torsional moment. Also, after the demolition, simulation results are also compared with actual collapse behavior. In results, it is confirmed the accuracy of collapse behaviour simulation results, and in blasting demolition, kick back motion can be controled by adjusting pre-weakening shape and location, and the torsional moment of an asymmetric structure also can be solved by optimizing detonation locations and its time intervals.
The behaviors of steel-plate shear panels were investigated through an experimental and analytical study, using mild steel (S40). Steel-plate shear panels buckle at small loads, and their strength is based on the shear panel's postbuckling strength due to tension field action. In design practice, however, the capacity of steel-plate shear panels is limited to the elastic buckling strength of shear panels. Th e National Standard on Limit States Design of Steel Structures, CAN/CSA-S16.1-94 (1994) contains a guideline for the analysis of thi n, unstiffened, steel-plate shear walls using the strip model. In this paper, the structural capacity of shear panels was evaluated using the results of the experiment and of the strip model analysis.
