  • In this paper, the elevated temperature tensile properties and short-time creep rupture characteristics were investigated for the friction welded joints of dissimilar materials, Cu-1%Cr-0.5%Zr and STS316L. The joining tests on Cu-1%Cr-0.5%Zr/STS316L by friction welding were performed, and optimum joining conditions of the friction welded joints were determined. The characteristics of the elevated temperature tensile strength, hardness, fractographs were examined, and the creep rupture characteristics for the optimum welded joints were investigated under uniaxal static load at 300, 400 and $500^{\circ}C$.

  • An opportunity to use the elevated temperature has been recently increasing in various elements of heat facilities or machines such as heat exchanger tubes, pressure vessels, engines of aircraft, boilers and turbines in power plants, and nuclear reactor components, etc. as machinery industry develops. Thus, the development of such elevated-temperature heat-resisting materials and the studies on their elevated-temperature materials friction welding, creep design and analysis have been considered as an important and needful fact. In this paper, friction welding optimization for 1Cr0.5Mo to STS304 and AE applications for the weld quality evaluation were investigated. The important results of this study are as follows : The techniques for dissimilar friction welding optimization of the elevated temperature materials 1Cr0.5Mo and STS304 and its real-time weld quality evaluation by AE were developed, considering on both strength and toughness. • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the tribological behavior of NAO (non-asbestos organic) type brake linings containing different volume ratios of graphite and antimony trisulfide (Sb$_2$S$_3$). In order to investigate the effect of the solid lubricants on brake performance, three different friction tests (pressure, speed, and temperature sensitive tests) were carried out using a scale dynamometer. The test results showed that the friction characteristics were strongly affected by the type and the amount of solid lubricants in the brake lining. It was found that the brake linings with both solid lubricants were better in friction stability due to the complementary role of the two disparate lubricating properties at various pressure and speed conditions. In particular, the brake lining containing higher concentrations of graphite showed better fade resistance than others during high temperature friction test.

  • In this paper, joints of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L were performed by friction welding method. Particularly, Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy is attractive candidate as nuclear power plant material and exibit the best combination of high strength and good electrical and thermal conductivity of any copper alloy examined. The stainless steel is a structural material while copper alloy acts as a heat sink material for the surface heat flux in the first wall. So, in this paper, not only the development of optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability but also the development of in-process real-time weld quality (such as strength and toughness) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of such nuclear reactor component of Cu-1Cr-0.1Zr alloy to STS316L steel sere performed.

  • The control rod assemblies do freely fall into the reactor core by the gravity from the control rod drive mechanism. In order to achieve a rapid shutdown and control the reactor power, it is required to insert control rod assemblies as soon as possible. In this paper, we evaluated the drop time and flow characteristics caused around guide tube for SMART(System-integrated modular advanced reactor) control rod assembly. Numerical analyses are carried out with FLUENT program of computational fluid dynamics. This study results show that the drop time of the control rod assembly in the operating condition of SMART is more 20 percent rapidly than the drop time of the room temperature and ambient atmosphere condition.

  • The hydraulic or pneumatic valve spools become essential as the important components on the production of automatic hydraulic or pneumatic machinaries as mechanical industry is developed rapidly. The machining precision is asked for manufacturing the valve spools. They could be unstable in the quality by the conventional arc welding and they have a lot of technical problems in manufacturing because their shapes are generally small. By the Precision casting process such as lost wax process, the production cost will be increased. But by the friction welding technique, they will be able to be made without such problems. Furthermore, there is a few study on friction welding of such hydraulic valve spool steels and in-process real-time weld quality evaluation technique by acoustic emission. So that, the final purpose of this study is 1) the development of design and manufacturing technique of hydraulic or pneumatic valve spool by optimizing of friction welding, and 2) the development of in-process real-time weld quality evaluation technique by acoustic emission.
