  • A genetic linkage map was constructed using 188 $F_9$ RILs derived from a cross between $Solanum$ $lycopersicum$ H7996 (resistant to bacterial wilt) and $S.$ $pimpinellifolium$ WVa700 (highly susceptible to bacterial wilt). The map consisted of 361 markers including 260 DArTs, 74 AFLPs, 4 RFLPs, 1 SNP, and 22 SSRs. The resulting linkage map was comprised of 13 linkage groups covering 2042.7 cM. The genetic linkage map had an average map distance between markers of 5.7 cM, with an average DArT marker density of 1/7.9 cM. Based on the distribution of anchor SSR markers, 11 linkage groups were assigned to 10 chromosomes of tomato except chromosomes 5 and 12. The DArT markers were distributed across the genome in a similar way as other markers and showed the highest frequency of clustering (38.8%) at ${\leq}$ 0.5 cM intervals between adjacent markers, which is 3 times higher than AFLPs (13.5%). The present study is the first utilization of DArT markers in tomato linkage map construction.

  • A comparison between two species of Hyla japonica and H. suweonesis in Korea was carried out to clarify their morphological, genetic and ecological differences, to estimate presumed divergent time between them, and to elucidate their probable process and mechanism of speciation. The results are as follows; 1.The breeding season of H. japonica was earlier than that of H. suweonensis about one and half months. 2.H.japonica was distributed all over the country, while H. suweonensis was restricted in Kyonggi plains. 3.On the extemal morphometric characters, differences were hardiy seen between two species. But on the discriminant function analysis, there was apparent differences between them. 4.Genic variation based on 24 loci showed that H. japonica populations were about two fold more variable than that of H. suweonensis populations. 5.Genetic relatedness between two species was rather remote (S =0.520, D=0.634) 6.Their presumed divergent time was estimated to be about three and a quarter mfllon years. It is presumed that H. suweonensis was originated from H. japonica during the period of late pleocene and early pleistocene. 7.Premating isolating mechanisrns (breeding season, mating call, and microhabitat segregation) may be operating to prevent gene ifow between them.

  • Vegetation distribution and soil salinity were surveyed on the conservation plot in the Daeho reclaimed tidal land, in where the plants species distribution was more various than a periodically inundated tidal flat and the early stage of reclamation. According to the soil salinity where the vegetation patches were occurred, the mono patches of Salicornia europaea, Suaeda maritima, and Suaeda glauca were distributed in the average range of 31.05 dS/m in soil salinity, the mixed patches of them were distributed in the average range of 42.75 dS/m. Therefore, Salicornia europaea, Suaeda maritima, and Suaeda glauca showed strong salt tolerance. The mono patches of Aster tripolium, Sonchus brachyotus, and Scirpus planiculm were distributed in the range of 11.73 dS/m in soil salinity, and the mixed patches were distributed in the average range of 9.43 dS/m. Therefore Aster tripolium, Sonchus brachyotus, and Scirpus planiculmis showed moderate salt tolerance. The mono patches of Imperata cylindrica, Trifolium pratense, Miscanthus sinensis, Setaria viridis, and Trisetum bifidum were distributed in the range of 2.42 dS/m in soil salinity. These species showed characteristics of glycophytes with weak salt tolerance. The distribution of vegetation patches was influenced by the soil salinity as pioneer halophytes patches occurred at higher soil salinity zone than facultative halophytes patches, glycophytes patches occurred at lower soil salinity zone than facultative halophytes. These results suggested that occurrence of plant species and plant distribution type might be useful index to evaluate the soil salinity and desalinization in the reclaimed land of the midwest coastal area of Korea.

  • The distribution of cryophilous arctic-alpine and alpine plants in Korea is reviewed in connection with palaeoenvironment, along with a discussion to their origins, patterns of migration, and their refugia. At present, the estimated number of Korean arctic-alpine and alpine species is 419, and this includes 75 arctic-alpine species, 239 alpine species and 105 Korean endemic alpine species. The disjunctive distribution of cryophilous arctic-alpine and alpine plants is likely to be due to first, the downslope and southward expansion of those species towards the Korean peninsula as a primary refugia from the arctic region as the Pleistocene glacial phases approached, and then their subsequent isolation upslope in mountain areas toward a secondary refugia as the interglacial and post-glacial climatic ameliorations followed; secondly, the expansion of forest tree communities on lowland and montane areas subsequent to the end of the Pleistocene has had the effect of dividing formerly high mountains as a result of the increased competition; and thirdly, the general disapperance or restriction of available habitats for arctic-alpine and alpine species because of post-glacial climatic amelioration. The existence of 139 alpine species exclusively in the north of Korea may be due to the following reasons; first, frequent exchanges of alpine floras with other neighbouring East Asian regions would have been facilitated; secondly, there are numerous high mountains available for the alpine plants to survive and prosper during the post-glacial period; thirdly, the existence of easy accesses between mountains within the north, which has enabled alpine floras to migrate when necessary; and finally, the availability of diverse environments and habitats for the alpine flora of the north. However, the continued survival of those species in Korea at the world's or East Asia's southernmost limits of their distribution for many species is in danger if global warming associated with the greenhouse effect takes place.

  • In Korea, Hypodematium glanduloso-pilosum was formerly known as the only Korean native species in the genus. Recently, however, we reported one unrecorded taxon, H. squamuloso-pilosum Ching, which was found on rocks at a limestone mountain in Yeongwol, along with one new taxon, H. angustifolium in Okcheon. Traditionally, Hypodematium taxa are often distinguished from each other by vegetative characters such as pinnatifid lamina, glandular hairs, and narrower or linear lanceolate scales on stipe bases. H. glanduloso-pilosum, distributed widely throughout the country except on Jejudo Island in Korea, exhibiting variations in leaf segregation, indusia positions, hair distributions and size. The high variation in the morphological characters in the widely distributed taxon has caused problems delimitating three native species from each other. To evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among H. glanduloso-pilosum and taxa related to Hypodematium (all Korean native taxa), we carried out morphological and molecular analyses (cpDNA rbcL and psbA-trnH) of populations of the genus Hypodematium in Korea. Although H. glanduloso-pilosum exhibits high variations in some morphological characters, the species is characterized by stipes and indusia with densely multicellular hairs and rod-shaped glandular hairs or hairs and lanceolate or oblong lanceolate scales in rhizomes and stipe bases distinguished from those of other Korean native taxa (H. squamuloso-pilosum and H. angustifolium). In the analyses of cpDNA data, three Korean native taxa are placed in the same clade, i.e., in the glanduloso-pilosum group. Moreover, our analyses propose that H. squamuloso-pilosum (China and Korea), H. angustifolium (Korea), and H. fordii (China and Japan) share the same glanduloso-pilosum clade with H. glandulosopilosum (China, Korea, and Japan).

  • The Holocene Hypsithermal Interval(or climatic optimum) was the warmest post-glacial period: temperatures rose to as much as $1-4^{\circ}C$ above present temperatures. We hypothesize that southern plants expanded northward and upward during the Hypsithermal Interval. The Hypsithermal relict populations are defined as populations which distribute mainly in Is. Cheju and Southern subregions and have populations of short-distance dispersion separated by more than 100 km from the nearest distribution. The Hypsithermal relict species were identified and their distributions were mapped based on botanical floras and checklist, herbaria specimens, ecological studies, and field surveys of selected species. Evaluation of the hypothesis was based on reviews of published pollen stratigraphic and paleoecological studies. The results showed that the Holocene Hypsithermal relicts such as Corylopsis coreana Uyeki, Carpinus turczaninowii Hance, Stewartia koreana Nakai ex Rehder were expanded northward during the Holocene Hypsithermal Interval.

  • In order to study the seasonal characteristics of species composition and abundance, zooplankton samples were collected from April 1987 to June 1988 with bimonthly intervals in the Mid-Eastern part of the Yellow sea. Among the 24 species of 18 genera occurred in this study area, 17 species are copepods. Noctiluca scintillant has greatly influenced on the distribution of the zooplankton in the coastal area and some copepods may be excluded by its great occurrence. the seasonal variation of abundance of copepods accounting for 30-63.4% of total zooplankton were more varied among stations in the coastal area than in the offshore. It suggests that environmental factors are more variable in the coastal area than in the offshore. In the Copepod community, Acartia omorii, Paracalanus parvus and Corycaeus affinis were predominant in April and June, from August to December and in December, respectively. Sagita enflata as a Kuroshio indicator species, occurred in the study area from August to December. The great occurrence of warm water species, Doliolum sp. in October and the occurrence of Sagitta enflata from August to December suggested that there is a influx of the tributaries of Kuroshio current into the study area. It appeared that the seasonal characteristics of species composition and abundance of zooplankton were affected by the seasonal variation of water mass.

  • In this study, we investigated the potential changes in the cross sectional area of the rectangular microchannel with various zeta potentials and hydraulic diameters. We changed height/width ratio as 1, 1/2, and 1/3 and investigated its effect on the potential change. For this research, FEMLAB(Comsol, verson 3.0) was used to investigate the theoretical potential distribution. The potential changes in the cross section shows that right and left surfaces affect to some ranges. For the same area and shape, the potential value is directly proportional to the zeta potential change. With the decrease in the H/W ratio, the electrical double layer is condensed to the side surfaces.
