  • Girth at breast height was measured to test skewness ($g_1$) and kurtosis ($g_2$) of frequency distribution of the basal area in terms of t-test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for a total of forty six monocultures within Sudong and Kwhangnung area in central part of Korean peninsula in 1979 and 1980. The monocultures are about 10 to 50 years old, and four kinds: Pinus koraiensis, Larix kaempferi, Abies holophylla and Pinus rigida. Most of the sample sizes per site were ranged 70 to 110 excluding 4 sites. The number of classes interval was based on Sturges rule for each monoculture and was ranged from 5 to 10. In Sudong the range of age(yr) and basal area (($cm^2$)/tree) of the monocultures were from 10 to 20 and from 27.60 to 383. for Kwhangnung they were from 15 to 47 and mostly 102.15 to 619.14, respectively. All 43 monocultures except 1 showed +$g_1$, which ranged from 0.3 to 2.2 except six sites. Of the total 46 sites, 23 sites showed significant +$g_1$ which includes about 10 year-old monoculture. The number of classes interval with significant positive skewness ranged from 6 to 9. The data suggest that intraspecific competition in terms of stand structure seems to appear from about 10 year-old monocultures, and it may even last to about 50 year-old one. Around 24 monocultures showed nonsignificant -$g_2$ except one. Most -$g_2$ ranged from -0.12 to -0.83. Around 20 monocltures showed positive $g_2$ ranging from +0.13 to +3.841. Of the 22 +$g_1$, majority of 11 were very highly significant. Of all monocultures only 5 showed significant result from Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Of the 4 species, Larix kaempferi seems to show density stress first then Abies holophylla, and Pinus koraiensis last. Data of this study indicate that adequate number of classes intervals and sample sizes for studying intraspecific competition in terms of basal area are 6 to 9 and 80 trees rather than 12 and 100 trees, respectively. It also suggests that most of the frequency distribution of basal area class are trimodal rather than bimodal under density stress. It is proposed that the leptokurtic distribution appears before normal distribution rather than direct change from platykurtic to normal distribution of basal area for selected stages in the development of stands.

  • A matrix model of rice weevil population based on degree day (DD) was constructed. The basic matrix model predicted on exponential jncrcase of the adult weevil density and the finite rate of increase(h) of the population was estimated to be 2.155/100DD. Adult density simulated by the matrix model including intraspecific competition showed a damped oscillation over time and reached at the stationary level of 530 at 69, 300DD. The experimental population showed similar features to that of the model. But there were some differences in the highest density and period of adult oscillation. The differences could largely be caused by the assumption of the model; resource constancy.

  • A biopolymer based on microorganism-derived β-glucan and xanthan gum is being studied as a new eco-friendly material that stabilizes the riverbank slope, and also promotes vegetation growth. However, it is still inconclusive whether biopolymers have a positive effect on plant performance in the riverbanks which are subjected to various climatic factors and plant competitions. For a practical ecological evaluation of the biopolymers, their effect on plant growth promotion was studied in a natural environment. Considering the relationship between competition and plant community formation, the effects of biopolymers on competition were also investigated. For four plant species (Echinochloa crus-galli, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Leonurus japonicus, and Coreopsis lanceolata), the biopolymer effects under intra/interspecific competition were tested at the riverbank (20 m × 10 m) near Samjigyo Bridge in Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do. A biopolymer powder was mixed with water and commercial soil following the manufacturer's recommendations. The soil mixed with the biopolymer was filled in a pot or applied to the surface of the commercial soil with a thickness of 3 cm. Across the competition treatments, the biopolymer treatment promoted root growth of the target plant species and decreased the specific leaf area. The total biomass and shoot dry weight of P. alopecuroides increased in response to the biopolymer treatment. The competition treatment decreased the total biomass and shoot dry weight compared to the case without competition. Notably, such a competitive effect was similar in all the biopolymer treatments. Thus, biopolymers, when mixed with soil, promote the growth of some plant species, but do not appear to affect the competitive ability of plants.

  • This survey was conducted to know characterization of weed occurrence under protected culture conditions at Yousong in 1985. Chenopodium album, Polygonum hydropiper, Portulaca oleracea and Digitaria sanguinalis were dominated in outdoor, whereas Capsella bursa-pastoris, C. album, D. sanguinalis and P. oleracea were dominant in polyethylene house. More weeds emerged in mulching plots and dry weight of weeds was greater in non-mulching plots. Summer broadleaf weeds and summer grasses were abundant in outdoor, whereas non-mulching plots in polyethylene house was dominated by winter broadleaf weeds, and mulching plots in polyethylene house were dominated by winter grasses and winter broadleaf weeds in early stage and summer grasses and summer broadleaf weeds in late stage. Simpson index was high in polyethylene house and Shannon's diversity index, maximum diversity for the Shannon diversity index were lower than eveness using the Shannon diversity index and this trend was more remarkable in mulching and mulching in tunnel than in non-mulching under polyethylene house condition. Shannon diversity index, maximum diversity for the Shannon diversity index were high in mulching or tunnel, and Simpson index was high in non-mulching in outdoor condition. Interspecific competition was more severe than intraspecific competition in both conditions.

  • Ambrosia beetle, Platypus koryoensis, is a vector of oak wilt disease caused by Raffaelea sp. in Korea. The degree of damage by oak wilt disease was dependent on the density of the beetles in the oak trunk, a relationship between the degree of damage by oak wilt disease and the density of beetle on the basis of the number of entry hole was studied. Entry hole distribution within tree trunk was analyzed by the nearest neighbor method. Thirty four oak trees (Quercus mongolica) located in survey area were selected and then degree of damage, the number of attack hole/$623cm^2$ in upper (50cm from the surface) and lower (surface) trunk and the nearest neighbor distance between the holes were measured. The number of hole and the nearest neighbor distance in upper and lower part were positively correlated with each other. As the degree of damage was severer, the number of the holes increased, whereas the nearest neighbor distance decreased. The distribution pattern of the hole was changed from clumped one to uniform as the severity of damage increased. These results suggested that Platypus koryoensis attacked the oak tree in concentrative manner at initial stage of attack but at final stage, it distributed uniformly to reduce intraspecific competition between the beetles.

  • Subtidal zonation of a cumacean Bodotria biplicata was investigated in the sandy shore surf zone of Dolsando, southern Korea. Three replicate samples were taken with a sledge net at three sites, such as the surface and bottom of 1 m depth and waters edge, at hourly intervals over the neap and spring tide cycles on January 1993 (n=225). B. biplicata, the most dominant cumacean in this area, exhibited peak density at the bottom while about $0.6\%$ of total catch was collected at the surface. Mean density during the neap tide cycle was slightly higher than that during the spring tide cycle. The depth of subtidal zone influenced the total catch of B. biplicata. The changes in density were related to the depth of subtidal zone rather than day-night cycle or ebb-flood tide. The results obtained in this study suggest that the diel vertical migration is not distinct. During both neap and spring tide cycles, B. biplicata attained a density maximum at the same level of about 90 cm below lower low water (LLW). It is likely, therefore, that this species performs shore- and seaward horizontal migration fortnightly. The speed and distance of migration may be directly related to the beach slope and tide range. Ontogenetic differences in subtidal distribution were observed. Juveniles and manca larvae tended to occur lower areas than the adults. Such differences may reduce intraspecific competition for diets.
