  • This study was conducted to evaluate the possible subacute toxicity of gamma-irradiated dried bibimbap. The dried bibimbap was irradiated at the dose of 30 kGy at room temperature. For the animal study, the male and female ICR mice (8 mice per group) had the diet with AIN39G as control and dried bibimbap 30 kGy irradiated and non-irradiated for three months. During the experimental period, the group with 30 kGy irradiated bibimbap did not show any changes in appearance, behavior, mortality, body weight, organ weight, and food consumption compared to the control. Also, all of the biochemical parameters were observed in the normal ranges. In histopathological examination including hematological and serum biochemical analyses, there were no significant differences among the control and 30 kGy irradiated dried bibimbap groups. These results indicate that irradiation of bibimbap up to 30 kGy did not cause any toxic effects and could be applied for the development of safe ready-to-cook food.

  • The natural herbal antimicrobial additive, Flavo-$SK^{TM}$, was developed by Zoonosis Research Center of Wonkwang University. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Flavo-$SK^{TM}$ on the health status and performance of growing chickens. This study was conducted on the growing chickens (n=20,000) for 31 days in a growing chickens husbandry. The animals were divided with two groups; Flavo-$SK^{TM}$ treated group (n=10,000) and commercial diet feeding group (n=10,000). The Flavo-$SK^{TM}$ treated animals had provided with commercial diet adding the Flavo-$SK^{TM}$ as 0.29%. During the study period, we compared clinical signs, weight increase rate, diet consumption amount, gross finding, necropsy findings and histopathological findings between the treated group and non treated group. As the results of this clinical trial, the natural herbal antimicrobial additive, Flavo-$SK^{TM}$, showed the effects on disease reduction. It is suggested that Flavo-$SK^{TM}$ has the antimicrobial effects.

  • An intact female, 5-year-old, Pekingese, weighing 3.5kg with a history of a palpated abdominal mass was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University. In laboratory examination, there were no remarkable abnormalities. Radiographic findings included a left mid-abdominal mass with ill-defined margin, serosal detail loss of peritoneal space, non-uniform opacity of retroperitoneal space, and a radiopaque cystic calculus. On abdominal ultrasonography, a heterogeneous parenchymal mass with irregular contour in the left renal region was found. Computed tomographic findings showed a tumor embolus within the caudal vena cava and an invasion into mesentery, small bowel loops, spleen and pancreas around the large left renal mass. Unilateral nephroureterectomy was performed. Histopathologic examination of the resected mass confirmed the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma. The dog died one day after surgery. Although ultrasonography could give diagnostic information about mass characteristics, computed tomography (CT) can provide key imaging features of mass characteristics.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the potential toxicity of gamma-irradiated Dakgalbi keeping in mind its future use as a space food. Dakgalbi was irradiated at a dose of 30 kGy at $-20^{\circ}C$. AIN-93G was used as a control diet in the animal study. Both irradiated and non-irradiated Dakgalbi diets were administered to two groups of ICR mice (ten male and ten female mice per group) for 3 months. During the experimental period, we observed that the mice fed the 30 kGy-irradiated Dakgalbi did not show any changes in appearance, behavior, mortality, body weight, organ weight, or food consumption compared to the control mice group. In addition, all biochemical parameters of these mice, including hematology profiles, erythrocyte counts, and serum biochemical values, remained in the normal range. The histopathological examinations of liver and kidney tissues showed no significant differences between the control group and the group fed the 30 kGy-irradiated Dakgalbi. These results indicate that Dakgalbi irradiated at 30 kGy did not cause any toxic effects in mice and therefore it can be considered as safe and hygienic space food.

  • Epithelioid angiosarcoma is a rare variant of angiosarcoma characterized by an epithelioid morphology that mimics carcinoma. Therefore, multicentric epithelioid angiosarcoma is easily misdiagnosed as bone metastasis from carcinoma and has an aggressive clinical course. Here, we present a rare case of a 61-year-old male with multicentric epithelioid angiosarcoma of the bone. Plain radiography, CT, and MRI revealed multiple osteolytic lesions in both femurs; some lesions showed soft tissue extension with cortical bone destruction. Interestingly, PET-CT revealed that the lesions were only distributed along the bones of the lower extremities, including the pelvic bones, femurs, and tibiae. Despite histological analysis initially suggesting metastatic carcinoma, after additional immunohistological staining, including that for vascular markers (CD31 and ERG), the final diagnosis was epithelioid angiosarcoma. A better understanding of the clinicoradiological features of this disease may help eliminate diagnostic confusion and provide better management.

  • Purpose To assess the clinicoradiological features of pulmonary cryptococcosis in immunocompetent patients. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included immunocompetent patients who had been diagnosed with pulmonary cryptococcosis on the histopathologic exam and underwent chest CT between January 2008 and November 2019. Imaging features were divided into major imaging patterns, distributions, and ancillary imaging findings. Univariable analysis was performed to evaluate clinicoradiological features according to the presence of serum cryptococcal antigen. Results Thirty-one patients were evaluated (mean age: 60 years, range: 19-78 years). A single nodular lesion confined to a single lobe was the most common imaging pattern (14/31, 45.2%). Serum cryptococcal antigen tests were performed in 19 patients (19/31, 61.3%). The presence of serum cryptococcal antigen was observed in six patients (6/19, 31.6%), all of whom showed a consolidation-dominant pattern. The presence of serum cryptococcal antigen was significantly associated with the consolidationdominant pattern compared to those associated with a nodule-dominant pattern (p = 0.011). Conclusion A combination of CT findings of consolidation and a positive serum cryptococcal antigen test may be helpful for diagnosing pulmonary cryptococcosis in immunocompetent patients.

  • Purpose : Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP) is a noninvasive method for imaging the pancreaticobiliary tree. The aim of this study was to evalute the usefulness of MRCP for the diagnosis of pancreaticobiliary diseases in children. Methods : From October 1996 to May 2001, 67 patients with obstructive jaundice and three patients with chronic recurrent pancreatitis were evaluated with abdominal ultrasonography and MRCP. The final diagnosis was based on the operative and pathologic findings with biopsy specimen including clinical and laboratory findings. Results : A total of 70 patients, consisting of 31 males and 39 females, with a mean age of $2.6{\pm}3.3$ years were studied. The final diagnosis was biliary atresia in 25, neonatal cholestasis in 18, choledochal cyst without anomalous pancreatobiliary duct union(APBDU) in nine, choledochal cyst with APBDU in seven, cholestatic hepatitis in five, chronic recurrent pancreatitis in three, sclerosing cholangitis in two, and secondary biliary cirrhosis in one case. The overall diagnostic accuracy of abdominal ultrasonography was 75.7% and that of MRCP was 97.1%. The sensitivity and specificity of MRCP were 100% and 98% for biliary atresia, 87.5% and 100% for choledochal cyst with APBDU, 100% and 100% for choledochal cyst without APBDU, sclerosing cholangitis and chronic recurrent pancreatitis, respectively. Conclusion : MRCP is a fast, non-invasive and reliable method for diagnosing pancreaticobiliary diseases in children and will be the standard diagnostic procedure in the future.

  • Background: Genus of Aspergilli are ubiquitous saprophytic molds in nature, but its change from a saprophytic fungus to a pathogenic organism has occurred since the use of various antibiotics. The fungus affects the chronically ill and debilitated population. Recently frequency of the fungal infection is increasing in Korea with abuse of antibiotics and glucocorticoids. Method: We analyzed medical records of 52 patients with pulmonary aspergillosis seen at Hanyang University Hospital from 1980 to 1994. The results were as follows; Results: 1) Ages ranged between second to eighth decades with majority(50%) in the fourth to fifth decades. The male to female ratio was 1.1:1. 2) Hemoptysis and productive cough, the leading symptoms, occurred in 42.3% and 25% respectively. 3) On chest X-ray fingings, the characteristic "fungus ball" pattern were observed in 53.8% of the 52cases. 4) Sputum culture for aspergilli were positive in 21.6% of the cases. We performed fine needle aspiration in 22 patients and the diagnostic yield was 100%. 5) Thirty-six patients had history of treatment with antituberculous drugs under diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis for an average of 27.3 months. But sputum analysis for acid-fast bacilli were positive in 5.6%(2cases of 36cases), and postoperative pathologic findings showed that 38.9%(12 cases of 28cases) were combined with tuberculosis. 6) Right upper and left upper lobes were predominantly involved(34.6% and 19.2% respectively) and lobectomies were performed in 21 cases. 7) Underlying diseases were present in 47 cases and 48.9% of them were pulmonary tuberculosis. Conclusion: These results showed that pulmonary aspergillosis usually develops in patients with open cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis. And we must consider the possibility of pulmonary aspergillosis in a patient with hemoptysis and cavitary lung lesion.
