English visual word recognition of Korean: lexical access and word length effect (한국인의 영어단어 재인과정:어휘접근과 단어길이효과)

  • 시각적으로 제시된 영어 단어 재인시에 주로 단어빈도와 단어길이가 영향을 준다고 알려져 있다. 그러나, 단어빈도와 관련된 연구는 체계적으로 이루어져 왔지만 단어길이와 관련된 연구는 체계적으로 이루어지지 않은 편이다. 또한, 단어빈도와 단이길이에 따라 단어가 성 어휘집(mental lexicon)에 어떻게 표상되어 있으며, 상호간에 어떠한 관계가 있는 것인지에 대해서는 아직 구체적으로 알려져 있지 않다. 본 연구의 목적은 첫째, 단어길이와 빈도가 시각적으로 제시된 영어단어 어휘접근에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보아 단어길이효과가 어휘접근단계에서 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하며 둘째, 단어길이와 빈도가 미국인과 한국인의 어휘접근시 어떤 차이를 보이는지 알아보아 한국인과 미국인의 영어단어 정보처리의 차이를 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 단어 명명과제와 어휘판단과제를 사용한 실험결과 한국인과 미국인에게 모두 단어 길이와 빈도가 어휘접근에 영향을 주었다. 그러나, 한국인의 경우는 상대적으로 어휘판단과제에서 보다는 단어명명과제에서 어려움을 겪는다는 결과를 보여주었다. 이와 같은 결과를 볼 때 한국인이 영어단어 어휘에 접근할 때에도 미국인과 유사한 방식으로 처리를 하는 것으로 보인다. 그러나, 한국인의 경우는 미국인보다 조음과정에 상대적으로 더 어려움을 느끼는 것으로 보이며, 이것은 영어교육시 단순한 어휘암기보다 음운부호를 산출하고 단어를 말하는 능력을 향상시키는 방법을 좀 더 강조해야 한다는 것을 시사한다.

An Acoustic Analysis on the Plosives of Korean and Japanese

  • 본 논문에서는 한국어에 있어서 세 가지 유형의 파열음과 일본어에 있어서 두 가지 유형의 파열음과 일본어에 있어서 두 가지 유형의 파열음이 보여주는 시간적 특성을 어두 위치 및 모음간 위치로 나누어 비교해 보았다- 한국어에 있어서 세 가지 유형의 파열음은 어두 위치에서 모두 무성음으로 실현되므로 성의 대립으로는 이들을 유형화 할 수 없고, 그보다는 조음의 힘과 기식의 유무에 따라 연음, 무기 경음, 유기 경음으로 분류하는 것이 타당하다. 이에 비해 일본어 파열음은 유성음인 연음과 무성음인 경음의 두가지 유형으로 대립된다. 유성음과 무성음, 그리고 유기음과 무기음의 구분에는 파열음의 개방에서부터 성대 진동까지의 시간인 성 시작 시간(VOT)과 기식의 길이가 변수가 된다. 경음과 연음의 구분에는 선행 모음의 길이, 폐쇄 지속 시간, Vl/(Vl+CL)의 비율이 유용한 정보가 된다. 양국어 어두 파열음의 VOT를 비교해 볼 때, 일본어 유성음은 음수의 VOT를 가지며, 한국어 무기 경음에서는 VOT가 10msec정도로 짧게 나타나고, 그 다음으로 한국어 연음. 일본어 무성음, 한국어 유기 경음의 순서로 길어진다. $\frac{선행 모음의 길이}{(선행 모음의 길이+폐쇄 지속 시간)}$의 비율은 언어의 특성도 반영해 주는데, 한국어의 경우 연음: 무기 경음: 유기 경음의 비는 0.63: 0.30:0.35, 일본어의 경우 유성음:무성음의 비는 0.69: 0.45로 나타났다. 청취 실험을 통해 한국인의 자음 인식 경향을 살펴본 결과, 성대 진동의 유무를 변별적으로 사용하지 않는 한국인 화자는 일본어 유성음은 연음으로, 무성음은 경음으로 인식하는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Acoustic Duration of Consonants and Words by Phonetic Complexity in Children with Functional Articulation and Phonological Disorders (기능적 조음음운장애 아동의 조음복잡성에 따른 자음과 단어의 음향학적 길이)

  • Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate whether phonetic complexity affected the type and frequency of articulation errors and the acoustic duration of consonants and words produced by children with functional articulation and phonological disorders. Methods : The participants in this study were 20 children with functional articulation and phonological disorders and 20 children without such disorders who were between 3 years 7 months old and 4 years 11 months old. The participants were asked to name what they saw in pictures and their responses were recorded. The types and frequencies of articulation errors and the acoustic duration of words were analyzed and words were categorized as being of either 'high' or 'low' phonetic complexity. The acoustic duration of initial and final consonants and vowels following initial consonants were compared between the groups according to articulatory complexity. Results : Children with functional articulation and phonological disorders produced articulation errors more frequently when saying high complexity words and had longer word duration when saying low-complexity words than children without such disorders. There was no major difference in initial and final consonant duration between the groups. but the main effect of articulatory complexity on the duration of both consonants was significant. Conclusion : These results suggest that the articulatory-phonic structure of words influences the speech motor control ability of children with functional articulation and phonological disorders. When articulating consonants, children with functional articulation and phonological disorders had speech motor control ability similar to that of children without such disorders.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NASOPHARYNGEAL SPACE AND VELOPHARYNGEAL INCOMPETENCE IN CLEFT PALATE (구개열환자에서 비인두공간과 비인강폐쇄부전과의 연관성)

  • Nasopharyngeal closure is a sphincter mechanism between the activities of the soft palate, lateral pharyngeal wall and the posterior pharyngeal wall, which divides the oral cavity and the nasal cavity. It participates in physiological activities such as swallowing, breathing and pronunciation. In case of an error in this mechanism, it is called a nasopharyngeal incompetence. The causes of this error are defects in (1) length, function, posture of the soft palate (2) depth and width of the nasopharynx, (3) activity of the posterior and lateral pharyngeal wall. The purpose of this study is to analyze the nasopharynx of cleft palate patients using lateral cephalograms and at the same time, evaluate the degree of hypernasality of each vowels to find its relationship with nasopharyngeal incompetence. The following results were obtained: 1. The length of the soft palate was markedly short than normal. 2. The adequate ratio was smaller than the normal value. 3. As the adequate ratio decreased, when articulating vowels, anatomic mVPI increased. 4. When articulating each vowels, anatomic VPI was in proportion with the degree of hypernasality. 5. The degree of hypernasality was greater in high vowels(/i/, /u/) than low vowel(/a/). From the above results, it can be concluded that in cleft palate patients, lateral cephalograms can be used effectively in diagnosing and evaluating nasopharyngeal incompetence. The anatomic structure of the nasopharynx has close relation to the degree of hypernasality.

Automatic severity classification of dysarthria using voice quality, prosody, and pronunciation features (음질, 운율, 발음 특징을 이용한 마비말장애 중증도 자동 분류)

  • This study focuses on the issue of automatic severity classification of dysarthric speakers based on speech intelligibility. Speech intelligibility is a complex measure that is affected by the features of multiple speech dimensions. However, most previous studies are restricted to using features from a single speech dimension. To effectively capture the characteristics of the speech disorder, we extracted features of multiple speech dimensions: voice quality, prosody, and pronunciation. Voice quality consists of jitter, shimmer, Harmonic to Noise Ratio (HNR), number of voice breaks, and degree of voice breaks. Prosody includes speech rate (total duration, speech duration, speaking rate, articulation rate), pitch (F0 mean/std/min/max/med/25quartile/75 quartile), and rhythm (%V, deltas, Varcos, rPVIs, nPVIs). Pronunciation contains Percentage of Correct Phonemes (Percentage of Correct Consonants/Vowels/Total phonemes) and degree of vowel distortion (Vowel Space Area, Formant Centralized Ratio, Vowel Articulatory Index, F2-Ratio). Experiments were conducted using various feature combinations. The experimental results indicate that using features from all three speech dimensions gives the best result, with a 80.15 F1-score, compared to using features from just one or two speech dimensions. The result implies voice quality, prosody, and pronunciation features should all be considered in automatic severity classification of dysarthria.

Correlation between Consonants' Place and Vowel Duration in English and Korean (자음의 조음 위치와 인접 모음 길이의 상관성에 관한 연구: 영어와 한국어의 경우)

  • This paper explores whether there is correlation between consonants' place and duration of adjacent vowels in English and Korean. The results showed that in English the vowels preceding alveolar stops were in general longer than the vowels before bilabial or velar stops. Consonants appeared to have their inherent length due to their place and to exhibit some compensatory effects on the duration of preceding vowels. This effect can be explained in a physiological term that the tongue tip is the organ which might be more agile in articulatory movement than the tongue body for the velars or the lower lip (and the jaw) for the bilabials is and the shorter production time of the alveolars caused the lengthening of the adjacent vowels. However, this physiological account did not hold in the case of Korean, which exhibited less consistent patterns across speakers for the consonants' place and the vowel duration. The segmental duration seemed to be timed quite consistently within a language but the pattern was not universal across languages.

On the Center Pitch Estimation by using the Spectrum Leakage Phenomenon for the Noise Corrupted Speech Signals (배경 잡음하에서 스펙트럼 누설현상을 이용한 음성신호의 중심 피치 검출)

  • The pitch estimation algorithms witch have proposed until now are difficult to detect wide range pitches regardless of age or sex. A little deviation are observed with reference to the center pitch in the distribution diagram of pitches, since pitches are characterized by a physical limitation of the coarticulation mechanism. If the center pitches are refered to the accurate pitch extraction procedure, the algorithms will be not only simplified in procedure but also improved in accuracy. In this paper, we proposed an algorithm that the center pitches are accurately detected by using the spectrum leakage phenomenon for the noise speech signals.

Acoustic analysis of Korean affricates produced by dysarthric speakers with cerebral palsy (뇌성마비 마비말장애 성인의 파찰음 실현 양상 분석)

  • This study aims to analyze the acoustic characteristics of Korean affricates produced by dysarthric speakers with cerebral palsy. Korean fricatives and affricates are the consonants that are prone to errors in dysarthric speech, but previous studies have focused only on fricatives. For this study, three affricates /tɕ, tɕh, ͈tɕ/ appearing at word initial and intervocalic positions produced by six mild-moderate male speakers of spastic dysarthria are selected from a QOLT database constructed in 2014. The parameters representing the acoustic characteristics of Korean affricates were extracted by using Praat: frication duration, closure duration, center of gravity, variance, skewness, kurtosis, and central moment. The results are as follows: 1) frication duration of the intervocalic affricates produced by dysarthric speakers was significantly longer than that of the non-disordered speakers; 2) the closure duration of dysarthric speakers was significantly longer; 3) in the case of the center of gravity, there was no significant difference between the two groups; 4) the skewness of the dysarthric speakers was significantly larger; and 5) the central moment of dysarthric speakers was significantly larger. This study investigated the characteristics of the affricates produced by dysarthric speakers and differences with non-disordered speakers.

Acoustic differences according to the epileptic focus in benign partial epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes patients (양성 부분 간질 환아에서 간질 발생 위치에 따른 음성언어 분석)

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to investigate the speech problems in benign rolandic epilepsy (BRE) according to the seizure focus in EEG and semiology. Methods : Twenty three patients [right origin (13 patients) or left side (10 patients)] who met the BRE criteria by International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) were prospectively enrolled. We excluded the patients who had abnormal MRI or showed both side spikes in EEG. Computerized Speech Lab was used to assess the speech characteristics of the patients. Results : The error pattern of laryngeal articulation in BRE was exclusively substitution of stop consonants, these errors showed more frequent in the left group (16.0% vs 25.5%). Voice onset time (VOT) of stop consonants and Total duration (TD) of word in both groups were prolonged than normal control group, especially in left group (P<0.05). The first formant of vowel /o/ and second formant of /e/ were significantly decreased in left group (P<0.05). The right group scored wider on pitch range ($192.9{\pm}54.0Hz$) and energy range in spontaneous speech ($14.2{\pm}6.4db$) than the left group ($233.3{\pm}12.5Hz$, $19.4{\pm}9.3db$, respectively, P>0.05). Duration of counting (5 to 9) in left group slower than right group ($8.6{\pm}1.7$ vs $7.9{\pm}1.8sec$). Conclusion : Our data suggested that interictal spikes and seizures in either centrotemporal sides, especially left side group, may induce speech problems. We recommend the logopedic and phoniatric evaluations of speech in BRE patients.

Regional differences in Korean children's development of speech production (우리나라 아동의 지역별 말소리 발달 차이)

  • This study aimed to investigate regional differences in the development of speech production in Korean children. A total of 619 children aged 2 to 7 years from the Jeolla, Seoul/Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Gyeongsang areas were included in this study. The subjects were assessed with the UTAP2 word-level test. In PWC, PMLU, and PWP, the performance was significantly lower in Gyeongsang at 2 years 11 months and in Jeolla and Chungcheong at 3 years 5 months than in Seoul/Gyeonggi. The total PCC of Gyeongsang and Chungcheong and UTAP PCC of Chungcheong were significantly lower at 2 years 11 months compared with those of Seoul/Gyeonggi, while Jeolla and Chungcheong showed significantly lower total PCC and UTAP PCC than Seoul/Gyeonggi at 3 years 5 months. However, no regional difference was observed in any indicators after the age of 3 years 6 months. These results suggest that there are regional differences in the ability to produce speech sounds at a very young age, and that the differences can be explained by the differences between Seoul/Gyeonggi and the other provinces rather than by the individual characteristics of specific regions.
