Radiation grafting of acrylic acid and 4-vinylpyridine at room temperature has been studied by an impregnation method to improve the hygroscopic properties, the antistatic behavior and the dyeability of polyester fabric. Polyester fabric was impregnated with acrylic acid or aqueous emulsion of acrylic acid-4-vinylpyridine by immersion at 25$^{\circ}$or 7$0^{\circ}C$. The impregnated fabric was irradiated under nitrogen gas with ${\gamma}$-rays from Co-60. When acrylic acid grafted polyester fabric was treated with sodium carbonate, calcium acetate and potassium persulfate, tne rate of water absorption was increased and most parts of polyacrylic acid formed were extracted off from the fabric with 0.1% solution of sodium hydroxide at 10$0^{\circ}C$. In the case of the impregnation of a mixture of acrylic acid and 4-vinylpyridine the petcent of grafting has been shown to be proportional to the ratio of 4-VP/AA and radiation dost. Estimating by contact angle measurements of water on the various polymer surfaces, the antistatic behavior was decreased with the increase of grafting percent. The investigation of electron micrograph disclosed the existence of certain type of discontinuities in the acrylic acid grafted polyester fiber which was treated with various salts.
For the purpose of utilizing agricultural waste products for animal feeds, chemical analysis of some important agricultural wastes in Korea and enzymatic hydrolysis of rice hull were undertaken and summarized as follows: 1) Rice hull and straws of rice, barley and wheat were analyzed for their proximate principles and carbohydrate composition. 2) A strain of Aspergillus niger was selected as having the highest productivity of rice hull decomposing activity among many species of molds. The optimum conditions for the culture on washed wheat bran were. 3 days of culture period, 55% moisture content and neutral pH and one hour was proper for the extraction of enzymes. 3) The extent of hydrolysis of xylan and rice hull by a crude enzyme preparation from this strain was 63% and 7%, respectively, and the optimum pH for its activity was 4.0 and 4.5, respectively. 4) Enzymatic hydrolysis of rice hull was generally suppressed by gamma-ray irradiation ($0.5{\sim}5\;Mrad$, in dry state), but the effect was less by irradiation in wet state.
Immobilization of the second-cycle radioactive liquid wastes from a Purex process was developed with the blown asphalt (manufactured by Kukdong Shell Oil Company Ltd) to eliminate the possibility that the radioactive materials will be redispersed into the environment. Attempts to incorporate these wastes directly into the asphalt martrices without any pretreatment were not successful, as it was observed that the sulphuric acid in the waste oxidised the asphalt. Hence, the waste was treated with caustic soda and made alkaline prior to bituminization, so that it was found that this pretreatment made the waste compatible to the asphalt matrices. The pure blown asphalt samples irradiated with doses of 4.0$\times$10$^{7}$ rad showed no evidence of volume increase. The suitable temperature for incorporation of the alkaline wastes into blown asphalt was 180-20$0^{\circ}C$. The Products containing 50 wt% salts represented the following good properties viz., volume reduction (about 1.4), homogeneity, teachability etc. During the period of 131 day $s^{l37}$Cs from products containing 40wt% salts was leached at rates ranging from 2.70$\times$10-4 to 8.27$\times$10-4g/cm2_day but the rate for $^{90}$ Sr was lower by one to two orders of magnitude by distilled water. The leaching rates for $^{137}$ Cs and $^{90}$ Sr by sea water were slightly lower than by distilled water. Both of the leaching rates decreased with increasing pH.H.

Purpose: This study was a retrospective evaluation of the efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in patients with >4 metastases to the brain. Materials and Methods: Between January 2004 and December 2006, 68 patients with $\geq$4 multiple brain metastases were included and reviewed retrospectively. Twenty-nine patients received SRS and 39 patients received whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT). Patients with small cell lung cancers and melanomas were excluded. The primary lesions were non-small cell lung cancer (69.0%) and breast cancer (13.8%) in the SRS group and non-small cell lung cancer (64.1%), breast cancer (15.4%), colorectal cancer (12.8%), esophageal cancer (5.1%) in the WBRT group. SRS involved gamma-knife radiosurgery and delivered 10~20 Gy (median, 16 Gy) in a single fraction with a 50% marginal dose. WBRT was delivered daily in 3 Gy fractions, for a total of 30 Gy. After completion of treatment, a follow-up brain MRI or a contrast-enhanced brain CT was reviewed. The overall survival and intracranial progression-free survival were compared in each group. Results: The median follow-up period was 5 months (range, 2~19 months) in the SRS group and 6 months (range, 4~23 months) in the WBRT group. The mean number of metastatic lesions in the SRS and WBRT groups was 6 and 5, respectively. The intracranial progression-free survival and overall survival in the SRS group was 5.1 and 5.6 months, respectively, in comparison to 6.1 and 7.2 months, respectively, in the WBRT group. Conclusion: SRS was less effective than WBRT in the treatment of patients with >4 metastases to the brain.
The results of the scattery distribution in the fluoroscopy X-ray room were as follows. When the measurement was done at the same height with the table, measured value was 0.78 mGy/min ~ 0.04 mGy/min (95%) within 50 cm and 250 cm. At 50 cm below the table, it was 0.17 mGy/min ~ 0.02mGy/min (86%) and at 50 cm above the table was 1.37 mGy/min ~ 0.05 mGy/min (96%), displaying a decrease. At the same time, the amount of rays were reduced in 50 ~ 60% at the same height with the table than the location 50 cm above the table, 90~95% of reduction rate was observed at 50 cm below the table. For the collimator, comparing to the case when it was completely open, the amount of ray was reduced from 0.78 mGy/min to 0.16 mGy/min at 50cm away and 0.04 mGy/min to 0.01 mGy/min at 250cm away thus approximately 80% on average was reduced when the collimator was reduced to 25%. Comparing with the case when there was a object on the table, the amount of scatter ray was reduced by 96.7% at every location when there is not a object on the table.
In this study, the effects of the electron beam irradiation on the thermal behavior and the abrasion properties of the glass fiber reinforced nylon 12 was investigated. The electron beam irradiation was carried out over a range of irradiation dose from 100 to 600 kGy with additive crosslinking agents such as triallyl cyanurate (TAC), triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate (TMPTMA) for enhancing the crosslinking effects. The gel contents were increased dramatically above 200 kGy. It was verified that the degree of crosslinking depends on the radiation dose. The decreases of the melting temperature and the area of endothermic peak were observed as increasing the absorbed dose in the results of DSC analysis. The enhanced thermal stability was confirmed by the increases of decomposition temperature by electron beam irradiation. Furthermore, the negative deviations of the abrasion loss and the abrasion coefficients confirmed the improvement of the abrasion properties of irradiated nylon 12, as evidenced by SEM observation on the abrasion surfaces. The addition of the crosslinking agents to nylon 12 during effectively improved the thermal behavior and the abrasion properties of nylon 12 by the electron beam irradiation.

The X-ray detector by liquid crystal with front light was proposed and verified by a X-ray image. The proposed detector utilizes the visible light instead of the electric signal by transistor. Therefore, it shows low noise and can be fabricated at low cost. The liquid crystal detector uses the orientation change of the liquid crystal molecule by conductivity change of the photoconductive layer. We can get the X-ray image from the transmitted light through the liquid crystal. The X-ray dose was calibrated from the measured transmittance of the visible light after comparison to the reference transmittance curve of the liquid crystal. The amorphous Se was used for photo con ducting layer and parylene was used for the liquid crystal alignment instead of the conventional alignment layer which needs high-temperature process over 200℃. The proposed X-ray detector can decrease the X-ray dose by high sensitivity which was verified by simulation. After the fabrication of the X-ray detector, the X-ray image was obtained as a function of the bias voltage to the liquid crystal. 10 lines/mm resolution was obtained from the line pattern and we will apply it to the 17inch diagonal liquid crystal X-ray detector with 3π retardation.

To prolong the shelf-life of domestic peaches, samples were treated with UV-C (0~10.0 $kJ/m^2$) and the spoiling rate and changes in physico-chemical and sensory properties were investigated. No spoiled peaches were observed within the first four days of storage in the control and 2.5 $kJ/m^2$ UV-C treatment groups. However, spoilage was observed in these groups on day six, and 29.17% and 25.0% of the samples showed spoilage on 10 day, respectively. Moreover, samples treated with greater than 5.0 $kJ/m^2$ of UV-C showed a higher percentage (41.67% or higher) of spoilage than those of the control or 2.5 $kJ/m^2$ UV-C treatment groups on 10 day. Additionally, weight changes in the peaches were the lower in the control group and 2.5 $kJ/m^2$ UV-C treatment group than in those treated with 5.0 $kJ/m^2$ of UV-C treatment or higher during 10 days of storage. There was no difference in pH among treatments, regardless of storage time. The hardness of the samples was not changed immediately after UV-C treatment, but that of samples treated with 5.0~10.0 $kJ/m^2$ of UV-C decreased rapidly after four days, when compared to the control and 2.5 $kJ/m^2$ UV-C treatment groups. No significant changes in the lightness and redness of the samples were observed in response to UV-C treatment, however, UV-C treatment led to a slight decrease in the yellowness of the samples. The initial taste, flavor, color, texture, and overall acceptance did not differ among control and UV-C treatments. The sensory score of the samples was the highest after 2 and 4 days of storage, while it decreased thereafter. In general, samples in the control and the 2.5 $kJ/m^2$ UV-C treatment groups showed higher sensory quality than those treated with UV-C at 5.0 $kJ/m^2$ or higher.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of postoperative radiotherapy in a case of perihilar cholagiocarcinoma by analyzing overall survival rate, patterns of failure, prognostic factors for overall survival, and toxicity. Materials and Methods: Between January 1998 and March 2008, 38 patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma underwent a surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy. The median patient age was 59 years (range, 28 to 72 years), which included 23 men and 15 women. The extent of surgery was complete resection in 9 patients, microscopically positive margins in 25 patients, and a subtotal resection in 4 patients. The tumor bed and regional lymphatics initially received 45 Gy or 50 Gy, but was subsequently boosted to a total dose of 59.4 Gy or 60 Gy in incompletely resected patients. The median radiotherapy dose was 59.4 Gy. Concurrent chemotherapy was administered in 30 patients. The median follow-up period was 14 months (range, 6 to 45 months). Results: The 3-year overall survival and 3-year progression free survival rates were 30% and 8%, respectively. The median survival time was 28 months. A multivariate analysis showed that differentiation was the only significant factor for overall survival. The 3-year overall survival was 34% in R0 patients and 20% in R1 patients. No statistically significant differences in survival were found between the 2 groups (p=0.3067). The first site of failure was local in 18 patients (47%). No patient experienced grade 3 or higher acute toxicity and duodenal bleeding developed in 2 patients. Conclusion: Our results suggest that adjuvant RT might be a significant factor in patients with a positive margin following a radical resection. However, there was still a high locoregional recurrence rate following surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. Further study is necessary to enhance the effect of the adjuvant radiotherapy.
Pasteurization by radiation was performed to improve the microbiological quality of fresh yam juice. Samples were irradiated at doses of up to 5 kGy and microbiological, physicochemical, and sensory qualities were investigated during storage at 5oC for 8 days. Total aerobic bacterial, coliform bacterial, and yeast and mold counts in pre-irradiation samples were 7.09, 6.91, and 3.42 log CFU/g, respectively. Total aerobic bacterial and coliform counts fell significantly, in a dose-dependent manner, after irradiation, and these organisms were completely eliminated after 1 day of storage when 3 kGy or 5 kGy of radiation was applied. Yeast and molds were eliminated by irradiation at 3 kGy. Irradiation reduced sample viscosity. The $L^*$ value decreased after irradiation, whereas the $b^*$ value rose. Sensory evaluation testing revealed no significant difference between control samples and those irradiated with 1 kGy, except in color and texture, but sensory scores fell when irradiation of 3 kGy or over was employed, except in the taste domain. The results indicate that gamma irradiation with 1 kGy is effective to ensure the microbiological safety of fresh yam juice, without significant alteration in sensory characteristics, although further work should seek to reduce the detrimental effects of irradiation.
