  • Composition of the major and trace elements, Rb-Sr isochron age Sr-Nd isotope composition were determined for foliated in the Jeonju area, in the middle part of the Ogcheon Fold Bet, Korea. The geochemical characteristics of the Jeonju foliated granite indicate that the granite had been crystallized from a calc-alkaline series, and formed in a volcanic are environment. The isotopic compositions of the Jeonju foliated granite give Rb-Sr whole rock errorchron age of 168.2${\pm}$8 Ma(2${\sigma}$), corresponding to the middle Jurassic period, with the Sr initial ratio of 0.71354${\pm}$0.00031. $^{143}$Nd/$^{144}$Nd ratios, ${\varepsilon}$Nd and ${\varepsilon}$Sr values range from 0.511477 to 0.511744, -15.4${\sim}$-21.2, and +108.8${\sim}$+l42.6, respectively. Model ages were caculated to be 1.82${\sim}$2.89Ga. The isotopic data of Jeonju foliated granite indicate that the source material may have been derived from partial melting of continental crust materials.

  • The Cretaceous Duwon Formation was studied on the basis of sedimentologic analysis in order to unravel geologic conditions for the development of the streamflow-dominated alluvial fan under arid to semi-arid climatic conditions. The Duwon Formation unconformably overlies the Paleoproterozoic gneiss (basement). Based on the sedimentologic analysis, the Duwon Formation is interpreted to have been deposited in gravelly braided stream (FA-1) near the basement, laterally transitional to sandy braided stream (FA-2) and floodplain environments (FA-3) with distance (< 7 km) from the basement. Lateral changes in sedimentary facies and the well development of calcrete nodules in FA-3, together with radial paleocurrent directions measured in FA-1, are suggestive of the deposition of the Duwon Formation in streamflow-dominated alluvial fan under arid to semi-arid climatic conditions. Recent analysis of detrital zircon chronology suggests that sediments of the Duwon Formation were derived from the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula, including the western part of Yeongnam Massif and the southwestern part of Okcheon Belt. This implies the alluvial fan where the Duwon Formation accumulated had the large drainage basin. Because the large drainage basin can supply the significant amounts of water and temporarily store the sediments within the basin, watery floodwater carried sediments to the alluvial fan rather than the debris flows. Furthermore, the drainage basin largely composed of coarse-grained metamorphic and igneous rocks produced sand-grade sediments, preventing evolution of floodwater into debris flows. We suggest that combined effects of the large drainage basin and its coarse-grained metamorphic and igneous rocks provided favorable conditions for the development of streamflow-dominated alluvial fan, despite arid to semi-arid climatic conditions during sedimentation.

  • In this work, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) was synthesized via self-assembly process using triblock copolymer ($PEO_{20}PPO_{70}PEO_{20}$, P123) as template and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as silica source under acidic condition. SBA-15 have high surface area ($704m^2g^{-1}$) and uniform pore size (8.4 nm) with well-ordered hexagonal mesostructure. Spiropyran-functionalized SBA-15 (Spiropyran-SBA-15) was synthesized via post-synthesis process using 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl isocyanate (TESPI) and 1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-3,3-dimethy-lindolino-6'-nitrobenzopyrylo-spiran (HDINS). Spiropyran-SBA-15 was produced with hexagonal array of mesopores without damage of mesostructre. Surface area and pore size of Spiropyran-SBA-15 were $651m^2g^{-1}$ and 8.0 nm, respectively. Optochemical properties of Spiropyran-SBA-15 was studied with chemical vapors such as EtOH, THF, $CHCl_3$, Acetone and HCl. Main peaks of photofluorescence of Spiropyran-SBA-15 exhibited blue shift in the range of 603.4~592.1 nm after exposure under EtOH, THF, $CHCl_3$, and Acetone vapors. Normalized peak intensities decreased in the range of 0.8~0.3. The main peak of photofluorescence of Spiropyran-SBA-15 showed significant blue shift of 592.1 nm after exposure under HCl vapor, while normalized peak intensity decreased to 0.1.

  • Cavity-type beam position monitors were developed in collaboration with KEK to use for the future accelerators such as international linear collider (ILC) or x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) in PAL. BPM components such as BPM cavity, beam tubes, waveguides and feedthroughs were assembled by brazing at the same time to reduce mechanical errors during the fabrication. There are four screwed pins around outer rim of the cavity for the tuning of cavity frequency and x-y isolation. The resonance frequency of BPM is 6.422 GHz, the inner diameter of cavity is 53.822 mm, and the range of mechanical adjusting is $+ / - 250{\mu}m$. The x-y isolation was measured better than -40 dB after tuned. Test results of signal forms, x-y isolations, sensitivities are satisfied within requirements for the KEK ATF2 beam line.

  • The Neoproterozoic Gyemyeongsan Formation and the Mesozoic igneous rocks are distributed in the Eoraesan area, Chungju which is located in the northwestern part of Ogcheon metamorphic zone, Korea, and the rare earth element (REE) mineralized zone has been reported in the Gyemyeongsan Formation. We drew up the detailed geological map by the lithofacies classification, and measured the radioactivity values of the constituent rocks to understand the distribution and characteristics of the source rocks of REE ore body in this paper. It indicates that the Neoproterozoic Gyemyeongsan Formation is mainly composed of metapelitic rock, granitic gneiss, iron-bearing quartzite, metaplutonic acidic rock (banded type, fine-grained type, basic-bearing type, coarse-grained type), metavolcanic acidic rock, and the Mesozoic igneous rocks, which intruded it, are divided into pegmatite, biotite granite, gabbro, diorite, basic dyke. The constituent rocks of Gyemyeongsan Formation show a zonal distribution of mainly ENE trend, and the distribution of basic-bearing type of metaplutonic acidic rock (MPAR-B) is very similar to that of the previous researcher's REE ore body. The Mesozoic biotite granite is regionally distributed unlike the result of previous research. The radioactive value of MPAR-B, which has a range of 852~1217 cps (average 1039 cps), shows a maximum value among the constituent rocks. The maximum-density distribution of radioactive value also agrees with the distribution of MPAR-B. It suggests that the MPAR-B could be a source rock of the REE ore body.

  • The Gaetaesajiseokbulibsang (Treasure No. 219) consists of light gray and coarse to medium-grained granodiorite with feldspar phenocrysts in part. Magnetic susceptibility of the rock material was measured as 12.06(${\times}10^{-3}$ SI unit), being different from the granite($0.19{\times}10^{-3}$ SI unit) in the Mt. Cheonho. This indicates the raw material has been supplied from the outside. As a result of deterioration assessment, exfoliation of the Right Buddha, cement and dust of the Main Buddha were estimated as 35.2%, 21.1% and 25.0%. The ultrasonic velocity was measured as 2850.2m/s(Main Buddha), 2648.4m/s(Left Buddha) and 2644.5m/s(Right Buddha). The compressive strength calculated from the velocity showed low in the Right Buddha among three and the all pedestal parts which corresponds to the result of deterioration assessment. The indoor mean temperature and relative humidity of the shelter were $13.7^{\circ}C$ and 79.0%. It is evaluated that the indoor microclimate was stable and the shelter functioned to reduce climatic fluctuation of the outdoor. However, water condensation was occurred on the surface of the pedestal part during spring and summer, and freezing in winter season might also be done. These factors were probable to be a main cause of the surface exfoliation of the Triad Buddha Statues. Therefore, dehumidification and heating system in the shelter should be applied to prevent further deterioration.

  • The oversized and slotted holes are frequently required for the built-up in construction sites. The foreign provisions specify the reduction of the slip load subjected to the size of bolt holes and the direction of load. There are no domestic building codes and researches on the bolt holes. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate a change of joint strength quantitatively according to the bolt-hole size and surface condition by means of experiment. This study was conducted to evaluate the slip load subjected to the size of bolt holes, and measured on a change of clamping force of high strength bolts during 168 and 800 hours to analyze the trend of relaxation after fastening bolts. Torque shear bolts defined on KS B 2819 was used for the specimen. Test results exhibit that the variation on the slip load of the others was below 10% by contrast with the standard hole and the highest rate of relaxation was 2.66% of the initial clamping force at the case of the long-slotted hole of 2.5D.

  • A compact imaging spectrometer (COMIS) was developed for a microsatellite STSAT-3. The satellite is now rescheduled to be launched into a low sun-synchronous Earth orbit (~700 km) by the end of 2012. Its main operational goal is the imaging of the Earth's surface and atmosphere with ground sampling distance of 27 m and 2 - 15 nm spectral resolution over visible and near infrared spectrum (0.4 - 1.05 ${\mu}m$). A flight model of COMIS was developed following an engineering model that had successfully demonstrated hyperspectral imaging capability and structural rigidity. In this paper we report the environmental test results of the flight model. The mechanical stiffness of the model was confirmed by a small shift of the natural frequency i.e., < 1% over 10 gRMS random vibration test. Electrical functions of the model were also tested without showing any anomalies during and after vacuum thermal cycling test with < $10^{-5}$ torr and $-30^{\circ}C\;-\;35^{\circ}C$. The imaging capability of the model, represented by a modulation transfer function (MTF) value at the Nyquist frequency, was also kept unvaried after all those environmental tests.

  • We examined high-resolution seismic data, side scan sonar data, surface sediments, and vibrocore samples from a sand ridge off the western part of Dukjuk-Do in Gyeonggi Bay, with the aim of interpretation of seismic stratigraphy and sedimentary environment. Based on the seismic data, the deposited sands are divided into three sedimentary units. 14C age data indicate that the top sequence (sequence I) formed at 5000-6000 yr BP, when a transgression resulted in strong shifting tides. Analyses of the vibrocore samples indicate that sequence II is a paleo-mudflat layer of intertidal sediments dominated by mud. Sequence III consists of terrestrial sediments that are presumed to have been deposited at the end of the Pleistocene, unconformably overlying the acoustic bedrock and Mesozoic granite. The side scan sonar data indicate that sand waves were formed on the seabed on top of the sand ridge. Generally, this is the direction of $N20^{\circ}E$, which coincides with the direction of tidal flow. Sand ripples occur away from the top of the sand ridge and are distributed homogeneously across a sandy slope. Vibrocore analyses indicate that the surface sediments and core sediments (samples VC-1, -2, and -3) are homogeneous, without any internal structures, and are characterized by a mixture of medium and fine sand (1-$2{\phi}$), respectively.

  • The measures of contour-terracing with sod has been executed as a major measures for hillside erosion control works for a long time in Korea. It is, however, recognized that pair terracings make a new slope-face having the more steeper degree of slope between the upper and the lower terraces on hillsides and it also does not contribute for establishing the natural vegetation-cover by penetration of pioneer seeds on the slope faces or cut-faces of hillsides. The study was therefore conducted in connection with the above problems on the cut-face having slope of $40^{\circ}$ and 1.6 meter in slope length with clay soils. Plot allocation for the experiment consists of 3 kinds of 3 replica plots having each $1.6m^2$ of slope area, i. e., the control plot with direct seeding on slopes only ($T_1$), the covering plot with the straw-mats after seeding on slopes ($T_2$) and the seeding plot after covering with the straw-mats. ($T_3$). The main results obtained may be summarized as follows : 1. Effects of the straw-mat mulchings on surface soil loss control:-The total amount of soil losses from each treatments are measured as 4,651 gr from $T_1$, 163 gr. from $T_2$ and 2,891 gr. from $T_3$ treatment respectively. (Refer to table No. 2, 3 and 4). In short, it is recognized that effect of $T_2$ treatment is compared as 28.5 times than that of $T_1$ treatment and 17.7 times than that of $T_3$ treatment respectively. Effect of $T_3$ treatment compared with $T_1$ treatment is also such recognizable as 1.6 times in control of surface soil losses on a slope face. 2. Effect of the straw-mat mulchings on soil moisture content on slopes; -Average per cent of surface soil moisture content by treatments show as 21.60 at the $T_1$, 23.04 at the $T_2$ and 22.21 at the $T_3$ treatment respectively and that of subsurface soil moisture content by treatment show as 23.81 at the $T_1$, 26.16 at the $T_2$ and 24.81 at the $T_3$ treatment respectively. The variance of soil moisture content by treatments was highly significant (Refer table No. 7, 8 and 9). 3. Effect of the straw-mat mulchings on vegetation establishment;-Average numbers of germination by treatments are counted as 237 Nos. at the $T_1$, 246 Nos. at the $T_2$ and 262 Nos. at the $T_3$ treatment plots and the vegetation coverage on ground was almost same as about 90% of covers in all treatments. This effect is more or less lower than that of surface soil erosion control. 4. Regarding the effect on surface soil erosion control, the straw-mat mulchings would be effective as a new measures for control of soil erosion on erosion susceptible lands such slope-faced bare-lands as cut-fill faces, mass-movement faces and bare hillsides.
