Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP/AES) was used for the determination of uranium and thorium in geological materials. Samples were predecomposed by mixed acid digestion technique. The separation of the uranium and thorium was achieved by systematic solvent extraction with TTA(thenoyltrifluoroacetone) and TOA (tri-n-octylamine) and back extraction into HCl. The results for standard rock sample, NIST SRM 278, showed a good agreement with those certified from NIST as well as found values by other non-destructive techniques. Additional purification for extracted portions was carried out by anion exchange chromatography for measurement of several natural radioisotopes of uranium and thorium by alpha spectrometry.
The effects of thickness, base element and additive to inoculant on the number of eutectic cells and chill depth of thin-section gray cast iron were investigated. Meanwhile the number of eutectic cells increased by inoculation, chill depth decreased. The former decreased and the latter increased by holding the melt at the temperature range between 1,450 and $1,500^{\circ}C$. The former was more for the thinner casting with the thickness of 5 mm than the other. The result of thermal analysis coincided well with the change of macrostructure. The former increased and the latter decreased with the increased contents of carbon, silicon and the silicon content by inoculation. The former decreased and the latter increased with increased manganese content. The number of eutectic cells decreased as the amounts of rare earth and the bismuth added to this inoculant increased. With the addition of sulfur of 0.10 wt% of the weight of this inoculant, the maximum number of eutectic cells was obtained.

A radioisotope tracer experiment was carried out in the submerged fixed bioreactor of a dye wastewater treatment facility to evaluate the flow behaviors in the 6 compartments of the reactor and to find any possible factors which may affect to the efficiency of the process. Approximately 20mCi of $^{131}I$ was injected into the system as a tracer and 8 radiation detectors were placed in the 6 compartments and at the inlet and the outlet of the system to measure the change of the tracer concentration with time. Using the Perfect Mixers in Series Model the measured data were analyzed to calculate the mean residence time and the characteristic parameters of the flow in the system. The mean residence time of the system was calculated as 17 hours which is 76% of the designed MRT(22.3hr). Among the 6 compartments, the first compartment doesn't show the characteristic of perfect mixer, whereas, the other 5 compartments are working as perfect mixers. The output response of the first compartment is fit well with the simulated output of a model which consists of a perfect mixer with an exchange volume. It indicates that a quarter of the tank volume is working as a dead volume or an exchange volume. From the measured residence time distributions in each compartment, the appropriate sampling times after the change of operational condition of the electron beam accelerator were evaluated.
The graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometric determination of trace lead in water samples was studied using matrix modifiers. In order to modify the sample matrix, the type and optimum amount of the modifier were investigated with a given concentration of Pb solution. In fact, if the matrix is not modified, lead has low ashing and atomization temperatures as to give a low absorbance with bad reproducibility because of its volatility. Therefore, optimum modifiers should be used to stabilize the atomization. In this work, the ashing and atomization temperatures were raised from 400 and $1800^{\circ}C$, to 1,000 and $2000^{\circ}C$, by the addition of palladium to 50 ng/mL lead solution as a modifier. The concentration of palladium was 5.0 ${\mu}g/mL$ in the modified solution. Furthermore, if 1.5 ${\mu}g/mL$ of aluminum was mixed with the palladium modifier as an auxiliary modifier, the ashing temperature could be increased $150^{\circ}C$ additionally. With such a treatment, the sensitivity was improved more than 5 times of the solution unmodified and the reproducible results of less than 5% RSD were obtained in the samples of university's waste water and pipe-washing tap water. It could be concluded that this procedure was quantitative in the determination of trace lead from the recoveries of more than 88% obtained in the samples in which a given amount of lead was spiked.
Carbon and small amounts of alloying elements were added in Fe-5.7% Al ferromagnetic damping alloy. The specific damping capacities(SDC) of these alloys were investigated in relation to the grain size and the magnetic hysteresis loops. The behavior of carbon was analysed by XRD and EDS. These alloys showed characteristic damping nature of ferromagnetic damping materials. The alloying elements decreased SDC and especially the carbon was remarkable. The SDC was observed to be not related with the grain size but with the magnetic hysteresis loop area. The remarkable decrease of SDC by carbon addition was attributed to the locking migration of $90^{\circ}$ magnetic domain wall by the interstitial carbon in Fe-Al solid solution. However, the carbides also seems to decrease the SDC.

Antibacterial activities of the trace elements in combination with the food additives were measured against 6 kinds of food-borne microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens. The difference of antibacterial activity was not shown among the kinds of food additives, such as dextrin, gelatin and collagen. Zn and Ge in combination with food additives had strong antibacterial effect. Especially, $1\%$ zinc acetate in combination with $1\%$ gelatin was more effective against P. fluorescens and S. aureus than against Bacillus sp., E. coli and V. parahaemolyticus. Minimum inhibitory concentration of zinc acetate in combination with $1\%$ gelatin appeared to be 0.5 mg/mL on S. aureus and P. fluorescens, and 1.0 mg/mL on E. coli, V. parahaemolyticus, B. cereus and B. subtilis. Minimum bactericidal concentration of zinc acetate in combination with $1\%$ gelatin appeared to be 0.5 mg/mL on P. fluorescens and 1.0 mg/mL on E. coli, V. parahaemolyticus, S. aureus, B. cereus and B. subtilis. The zinc acetate in combination with gelatin showed stronger inhibitory effect in acidic range below pH 6.0, and remained active even after heat treatment at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. In comparison with control, the viable cell counts of fish pastes, which were coated with the solution containing both $1\%$ zinc acetate and $3\%$ gelatin, were decreased by more than 100-fold until the storage of 7 days at $10^{\circ}C$. The results indicate that the combined use of zinc acetate and some food additives could prolong the shelf life of fish pastes by 8 days or more at $10^{\circ}C$.
The present experiment was conducted to investigate effects of soil conditioner applied on continuous cropping fields of red pepper from 1985 to 1986 in Imsil, Chunbuk province. 1. The ratios of bacteria/fungi (B/F) and actinomycetes/fungi (A/F) in the soils of continuous cultivation were increased with application of phytotoxin decomposers such as deep tillage (De), compost (Co), magnesium lime (Mg), gypsum silicate, and De + Co + Mg. 2. Degradation of phytotoxin (p-hydrohylenyons aeid) in the continuous soils was promoted with application of De, Co, Mg, gypsum, silicate and De + Co + Mg resulting in yield increase. 3. The infection rate plant by phytophthora were decreased with deep tillage and application of compost and magnesium lime and caused the increase of yield (22%) due to the increase of fruit per hill.
As the dispersants and the dispersant/oil mixtures are degraded naturally by the microorganisms in the seawater, the consumption of dissolved oxygen may cause marine organisms to be damaged especially in the waters where the dissolved oxygen level is low due to the pollution and the restriction of seawater flow. The biodegradation experiment, the TOD analysis and the element analysis for three dispersants(SG, GL and WC) and a nonionic surfactant(OA-5) were conducted for the purposes of evaluating the biodegradability of dispersants and studying the effect of dispersants on dissolved oxygen in the seawater. The results of biodegradation experiment showed 1mg of dispersants to be equivalent to $0.403{\sim}0.595mg$ of $BOD_5$ and to $0.703{\sim}0.855mg$ of $BOD_{20}$, and 1mg of nonionic surfactant to be equivalent to 0.50mg of $BOD_5$ and to 0.97mg of $BOD_{20}$ in the natural seawater. The results of TOD analysis showed 1mg of dispersants to be $2.37{\sim}2.80mg$ of TOD and 1mg of nonionic surfactant to be 2.45mg of TOD. The results of element analysis showed carbon content and hydrogen content to be $67.6{\sim}76.5\%$ and $10.2{\sim}12.2\%$ for dispersants, and $65.3\%$ and $10.3\%$ for nonionic surfactant, respectively. No nitrogen element was detected in dispersants and a nonionic surfactant. The biodegradability of dispersants shown as the ratio of $BOD_5/TOD$ was found to be in the range of $17{\sim}21\%$, and that of nonionic surfactant was found to be about $20\%$. This means that dispersants and nonionic surfactant belong in the organic matter group of middle-biodegradabilily. The deoxygenation rates($K_1$) and ultimate oxygen demands($L_o$) obtained through the biodegration experiment and Thomas slope method were found to be $0.121{\sim}0.171/day$ and $3.155{\sim}3.810mg/l$ for 4mg/l of dispersants and to be 0.181/day and 1.911mg/l for 2mg/l of nonionic surfactant in the seawater, respectively.

UV-screening agents have some adverse effects that raise consumers' concern. The organic agents often cause irritation and may penetrate into human body while the inorganic agents raise aesthetic issues because they often turn opaque. Organic agents with high molecular weights and nano-sized inorganic agents have been developed respectively to minimize transdermal intrusion into human body and suppress turning opaque. Recently, we reported preparation of powdery UV-screening agents made of polysilsesquioxane, an organic-inorganic hybrid material. Powders would not penetrate into epidermis and organic-inorganic hybrid nature would suppress the opaqueness problem. In this study, we continued our research on this powdery polysilsesquioxane UV-screening agent, SESQUV, regarding its chemical composition, its synergic UV-screening effects when mixed with other organic agents, and its applicability in practical formulation. Results showed SESQUV was promising UV-screening agents useful in sunscreen formulation.
