Synthesis and characterization of thermoelectric Zn1-xAgxSb compounds (열전재료 Zn1-xAgxSb의 제조와 특성)

  • Thermoelectric compounds of $Zn_{1-x}Ag_xSb$ with x = 0~0.2 were prepared by vacuum melting and quenching process and their crystal phases and thermoelectric properties were examined. It was found that free metallic Sb phases were formed in the compound with x = 0.05, leading to increasing the electrical conductivities. The power factors were significantly affected by the electrical conductivity rather than Seebeck coefficient. When x > 0.05, the peak intensities of $Ag_3Sb$ phases in XRD patterns were increased and those of free Sb phases were weakened. These changes of second phases resulted in decreasing the electrical conductivities and the power factors and became more obvious in the compound with x = 0.2.

  • In this paper, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and micro glass bubbles (GBs) have been incorporated into a polyamide6 (PA6) matrix to impart thermoelectric properties. The spaces created in the matrix by GBs allows the formation of "segregated" CNT network. The tightly bound CNT network, if controlled properly, can serve as a conductive path for electron transport, while prohibiting phonon transport, which would provide an ideal configuration for thermoelectric applications. The CNTs and GBs were dispersed in a nylon-formic acid solution using horn sonication followed by coagulation in deionized water, and nanocomposite panels were fabricated using a hot press. The performance of nanocomposite panels was evaluated from thermal and electrical conductivities and Seebeck coefficient, and a thermoelectric figure of merit as high as 0.016 was achieved.

An Experimental Study on the Supplemental Cooling and Heating Performance Using 1 kW Thermoelectric Module for Vehicle (열전모듈을 이용한 자동차용 1 kW급 보조 냉난방 시스템의 성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of supplemental cooling and heating system equipped with the 1 kW thermoelectric module. The system consist of 96 thermoelectric modules, heat sink with louver fin and water cooling jacket which is attached on the hot side of the thermoelectric module. The cooling and heating performance test of the thermoelectric system is conducted with various conditions, such as intake voltage, air inlet temperature, air flow volume, water inlet temperature and water flow rate at calorimeter chamber in consideration of environmental conditions in realistic vehicle drive. The experimental results of a thermoelectric system shows that the cooling capacity and COP is 1.03 kW, and 1.0, and heating capacity and COP is 1.53 kW, and 1.5 respectively.

PbTe-$Bi_2Te_3$계 열전소재의 계단식 냉각법에 따른 열전특성

  • 고효율의 열전특성을 갖는 나노 구조체 열전재료 연구의 일환으로 이종물질인 $Bi_2Te_3$-PbTe계 열전소재의 미세구조와 특성을 조사하였다. 계단식 냉각법(step cooling)를 통하여 시편을 제조 하였고, EPMA를 이용하여 시편의 미세구조를 관찰하였다. 열전소재의 상분리를 유도하기 위하여 $700^{\circ}C$에서 용융 후 3일 동안 $400^{\circ}C$로 유지시킨 후 상온까지 용융로에서 서냉하였다. EPMA를 이용하여 제조된 시편의 미세구조와 정량 분석을 하였고, 각 상의 결정구조 확인을 위하여 XRD 분석법을 이용하여 다결정의 PbTe와 $Bi_2Te_3$ 그리고 준안정상인 $PbBi_2Te_4$가 관찰 되었다. 계단식 냉각법을 통한 시편의 열전특성을 측정하였다. 이를 통하여 제조된 시편은 급속 냉각법으로 제조된 시편과 비교되었으며, 제벡계수는와 열전도도는 상온에서 각각 약 -100mV/K와 0.9W/mK로 약90%, 40%의 열전특성 향상을 확인하였다.

Experimental Study of Standalone Cooling and Heating System using Thermoelectric Element for Vehicles (열전소자를 이용한 차량용 독립 냉난방시스템에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the cooling and heating performance of a standalone-type thermoelectric system equipped with a thermoelectric module. The system consists of a blower and two thermoelectric modules with a fin, which is soldered onto both sides of the thermoelectric module and a courtesy light. The thermoelectric system experiment is conducted with the intake voltage to find the optimum cooling and heating performance of each. The results showed that the cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) were 22 W and 0.31, and the heating capacity and COP were 147 W and 1.1, respectively. In the vehicle cooling and heating performance test in a climate wind tunnel, the results showed that the standalone thermoelectric system's cooling performance was slightly better than the base system; and the heating performance of the standalone thermoelectric system was $54.1^{\circ}C$ and the COP was 1.3, compared to the base system.

Fabrication of the thermopile using SOI structure (SOI 구조를 이용한 열전쌍열(Thermopile) 제작)

  • In this paper, a thermopile which is applied to wide uses of temperature measuring was fabricated and its characteristic was improved by appling SOI structure to the fabrication. We improved characteristic of the thermopile by using single crystal silicon strips that has high seebeck coefficient and dielectric isolating the silicon strips from substrate with silicon dioxide film which dramatically decrease thermal conductivity between hot and cold junction compared to a silicon strip which was fabricated by ion implantation. The thermopile consists of 17 p-type single crystal silicon strips and 17 n-types by serial connection. The result of electromotive force measuring showed very good characteristic as 130mV/K when temperature difference between the two ends of the thermopile occurs by applying light on the thermopile fabricated with silicon strips of $1600{\mu}m$ length, $40{\mu}m$ width, $1{\mu}m$ thickness.
