Improved Correlation Noise Modeling for Transform-Domain Wyner-Ziv Coding (변환영역에서의 Wyner-Ziv 코딩을 위한 개선된 상관 잡음 모델)

  • 최근 센서네트워크와 같은 에너지 제한 환경을 위한 경량화 부호화 기술의 필요성이 대두됨에 따라 분산 소스 부호화 기술(Distributed Source Coding)의 응용기술로 비디오 부호화 복잡도의 대부분을 차지하는 움직임 예측/보상과정을 부호화기가 아닌 복호화기에서 수행하는 분산 비디오 부호화 기술(Distributed Video Coding)에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어져 왔다. 이에 가장 대표적인 기술인 Wyner-Ziv 코딩 기술은 채널 코드를 이용하여 원본 프레임과 이에 대한 복호화기의 예측영상인 보조정보 사이의 잡음을 제거하여 영상을 복원한다. 일반적으로 보조정보는 원본영상에 유사한 키 프레임간의 프레임 보간을 통하여 생성되며 채널 코드는 Shannon limit에 근접한 성능을 보이는 Turbo 코드나 LDPC 코드가 사용된다. 이와 같은 채널 코드의 복호화는 채널 잡음 모델에 기반하여 수행되어지며 Wyner-Ziv 코딩 기술에서는 이 채널 잡음 모델을 '상관 잡음 모델' (Correlation Noise Modeling)이라 하고 일반적으로 Laplacian이나 Gaussian으로 모델화 한다. 하지만 복호화기에는 원본 영상에 대한 정보가 없기 때문에 정확한 상관 잡음 모델을 알 수 없으며 잡음 모델에 대한 예측의 부정확성은 잡음 제거를 위한 패리티 비트의 증가를 야기해 부호화 기술의 압축 성능 저하를 가져온다. 이에 본 논문은 원본 프레임과 보조정보 사이의 잡음을 정확하게 예측하여 잡음을 정정할 수 있는 향상된 상관 잡음 모델을 제안한다. 제안 방법은 잘못된 잡음 예측에 의해 Laplacian 계수가 너무 커지는 것을 방지하면서 영상내의 잡음의 유무에 별다른 영향을 받지 않는 새로운 문턱값을 사용한다. 다양한 영상에 대한 제안 방법의 실험 결과는 평균적으로 약 0.35dB에 해당하는 율-왜곡 성능 향상을 보여주었다.

New stop criterion using the absolute mean value of LLR difference for Turbo Codes (LLR 차의 절대 평균값을 이용한 터보부호의 새로운 반복중단 알고리즘)

  • It is well known the fact that turbo codes has better performance as the number of iteration and the interleaver size increases in the AWGN channel environment. However, as the number of iteration and the interleaver size are increased, it is required much delay and computation for iterative decoding. Therefore, it is important to devise an efficient criterion to stop the iteration process and prevent unnecessary computations and decoding delay. In this paper, it proposes the efficient iterative decoding stop criterion using the absolute mean value of LLR difference. It is verifying that the proposal iterative decoding stop criterion can be reduced the average iterative decoding number compared to conventional schemes with a negligible degradation of the error performance.

Oceanographic Studies Related to the Tidal front in the Mid-Yellow Sea off Korea: Physical Aspects (황해 중부의 조석전선과 연관된 해양학적 연구 : 물리적 특성)

  • Observations by CTD castings, moored current meters and satellite imageries reveal some physical characteristics of the area around the tidal mixing front found in the mid-Yellow Sea off Korea. Tidal mixing is the greatest at the promontory of Taean Peninsula with a front around it. The front appears in April with the start of solar heating, becomes most clear in August and disappears in November with the start of surface cooling. In the north of the front, tidal fluctuations of temperature and salinity induced by tidal currents manifest the existence of the front, Differently from the usual tidal mixing front, the front in Kyunggi Bay is formed by presence of the water discharged from the Han River which meets the offshore water at the front. Near the surface cold center, vertically well-mixed zone extends to about 50 Km offshore from the coast, Farther south, this structure is generally retained but with lesser degree of vertical mixing. Within the relatively well-fixed coastal zone, the fresh water discharged from the Kum River makes another salinity front of smaller extent. At some places around this salinity front, an Upwelling-like feature is remarked.

Radiologic Evaluation for Differentiating Benign from Malignant Solitary Pulmonary Nodule (고립성 폐결절에서 양, 악성 감별을 위한 화상적 고찰)

  • We are now detecting an increasing number of solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) that are difficult to diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the useful radiologic findings for differentiating benign from malignant pulmonary nodules. Material and Method: The high-resolution CT (HRCT) findings of SPNs smaller than 3 cm in largest diameter were evaluated in 134 patients with malignant and benign nodules in regard to internal structures, margin characteristics, and surrounding parenchymal responses. Result: The nodules with the area of ground-glass attenuation (GGA) greater then 50% were noted in adenocarcinoma, inflammatory lesions and some of metastatic tumors, and the lesions greater than 90% were noted only in adenocarcinoma. The area of GGA in non-adenocarcinoma, benign tumors and tuberculomas were less than 50%, and mainly less than 10%. The findings of air bronchogram, spiculation, lobulation, vascular involvement, and pleural indentation were some noted at every types of malignant tumors, but especially high over than 30% in adenocarcinomas. Conclusion: Most peripheral lung adenocarcinomas form a characteristic radiologic findings especially in HRCT. Evaluation of these findings would be helpful in differentiating between lung cancer, especially adenocarcinoma, and other lesions.

Efficient DSP Architecture for Viterbi Algorithm (비터비 알고리즘의 효율적인 연산을 위한 DSP 구조 설계)

  • This paper presents specialized DSP instructions and their architecture for the Viterbi algorithm used in various wireless communication standards. The proposed architecture can significantly reduce the Trace Back (TB) latency. The proposed instructions perform the Add Compare Select (ACS) and TB operations in parallel and the architecture has special hardware, called the Offset Calculation Unit (OCU), which automatically calculates data addresses for the trellis butterfly computations. Logic synthesis has been Performed using the Samsung SEC 0.18 μm standard cell library. OCU consists of 1,460 gates and the maximum delay of OCU is about 5.75 ns. The BER performance of the ACS-TB parallel method increases about 0.00022dB at 6dB Eb/No compared with the typical TB method, which is negligible. When the constraint length K is 5, the proposed DSP architecture can reduce the decoding cycles about 17% compared with the Carmel DSP and about 45% compared with 7MS320c15x.

  • This paper presents a solution to error avalanche of deciphering where radio noise brings random bit errors in encrypted image data under ubiquitous environment. The image capturing module is to be made comprising data compression and encryption features to reduce data traffic volume and to protect privacy. Block cipher algorithms may experience error avalanche: multiple pixel defects due to single bit error in an encrypted message. The new fault tolerant scheme addresses error avalanche effect exploiting a three-dimensional data shuffling process, which disperses error bits on many frames resulting in sparsely isolated errors. Averaging or majority voting with neighboring pixels can tolerate prominent pixel defects without increase in data volume due to error correction. This scheme has 33% lower data traffic load with respect to the conventional Hamming code based approach.

  • We present Space-Time Trellis Coded Code Division Multiple Access systems, which maintain the full diversity and coding gain of Space-Time Trellis Codes(STTC) and have the immunity to performance degradation caused by multipath fading. These STTC CDMA systems are constructed by adding the spreading and despreading processes of PN codes to STTC systems. In multipath fading channels, delay spreaded signals are detected and combined, then decoded. According to the combining and decoding methods, there are four decoding methods. There are optimum ML decoding without combining, adding multipath signals in each receive antenna before decoding, combining multi path signals in each antenna before decoding, and combining all received signals before decoding. Performance of these methods is proportional to complexity. Besides, all methods are shown to compensate the irreducible error rate which appears in multipath fading channels.

  • Several HTPB/AP and HTPB/AP/HMX propellants were investigated experimentally for ignition characteristics in subatmospheric pressure. The threshold ignition pressure was 4psia for HTPB/AP composite propellant. The partial replacement of AP in HTPB/AP composite propellant by $5\sim15%$ of HMX, HNIW showed improvements in the threshold pressure was below 0.4psia. This appears to be due to the exothermic dissociation characteristics of HMX and HNIW at lower temperature $(\sim220^{\circ}C)$ than that of AP. The ignition substance B/KNO3 was coated thinly on the propellant surface for better ignition effect. As a result, ignition delay time of 15% was improved. NC is applied to $B/KNO_3$ ignition substance as a secondary binder and $NC-B/KNO-3$ suspension solution is coated to the propellant surface.

Estimation of soft decision channel gain for coded MIMO system (부호화된 MIMO 시스템에서 연판정 채널 이득값의 계산)

  • Modem digital communication systems are required to use forward error correction (FEC) codes to combat inevitable channel impairment. Turbo codes or low density parity check (LDPC) codes, using iterative decoding with soft decision detection (SDD) information, are the most common examples. The excellent performance of these codes should be conditioned on accurate estimation of soft decision detection information. In order to use FEC codes with iterative decoding for Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) system, reliable soft decision channel gain should be provided. In this paper, we investigate efficient SDD methods for turbo-coded MIMO system, and derive the corresponding formulas of SDD for various MIMO detection schemes. We present simulation results of the derived SDD schemes for turbo-coded MIMO systems, and show that the presented results almost approximate to maximum likelihood detection performance with much less computational load.

Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes using Superposition Matrices and Their Layered Decoders for Wibro Systems (Wibro 시스템에서 중첩 행렬을 이용한 준 순환 LDPC 부호의 설계 및 계층 복호기)

  • Most communication systems including Wibro use quasi-cyclic LDPC codes composed of circulants. However, it is very difficult to design quasi-cyclic(QC) LDPC codes with optimal degree distribution satisfying conditions on layered decoding and girth due to the restriction of the size of its base matrix. In this paper, we propose a good solution by introducing superposition matrices to QC LDPC codes. We derive the conditions on checking girth of QC LDPC codes with superposition matrices, and propose new decoder to support layered decoding both for original QC LDPC codes and their modifications with superposition matrices. Simulation results show considerable improvements to convergence speed and error-correcting performance of proposed scheme which adopts QC LDPC codes with superposition matrices.
