A Study on the Validity and Utility of Korean-Age and Stage Questionnaire for Children in Community (지역사회 아동의 Korean-Age and Stage Questionnaire 타당도와 효용성 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity and utility of the Korean-Ages and Stages Questionnaires(K-ASQ) as a screening tool for detecting developmental delay of preschool child in community. Informed consents from parents of 229 children were received for the process of the study. The subjects were 229 parents and the children of three to five years old who did not have reported genetic diseases or developmental delays. The result of this study, validity were calculated for the K-ASQ sensitivity 0.41%, specificity 0.76%, hyper-referral 0.14%, hypo-referral 0.21%. Predictive value of delayed development were K-ASQ 0.70% and that of normal development were K-ASQ 0.77%. K-ASQ can be feasibly used in the setting of health clinic and be the highly predictive criteria for delayed development and normal development.

Attentional Bias toward Angry Faces in Typically Developing Children and Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (정상 발달 아동과 자폐 스펙트럼 장애 아동의 분노 표정에 대한 주의 편향)

  • This study aimed to assess the attentional bias toward angry faces in typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A continuous performance task was employed, where a distractor appeared as a target letter ("T") and changed direction every 1,250 ms. Longer reaction times to the target in the presence of a distractor, compared to its absence, were considered as evidence of attentional bias toward the distractor. The task assessed the attentional bias toward angry faces in 14 boys with ASD and 17 TD boys, aged 6-12 years. A repeated-measures analysis of variance was conducted on reaction times with emotion, time, and group as independent variables. The three-way interaction effect approached significance. Group-specific analyses revealed that TD children exhibited significant attentional capture when angry faces first appeared, whereas those with ASD did not. Accuracy analysis revealed no significant differences between the groups, with both groups maintaining >85% accuracy, confirming the task's suitability for school-aged children. The absence of attentional bias toward angry faces in children with ASD indicates that these faces may not be perceived as particularly salient for children with ASD. These findings denote that interventions encouraging top-down processing of emotional cues, such as angry faces, may support the development of adaptive social skills in children with ASD.

  • For many years, a number of critical issues have been raised in relation to classification criteria. prevalence and clinical features as well as the concept of childhood depression itself. In order to achieve a better understanding of the childhood depression, empirical data on the prevalence and clinical features of depression in childhood and adolescence were reviewed and discussed from the developmental perspective. The developmental perspective proposes that maladaptive behaviors are products of the coping process to normal developmental tasks and it is necessary to make out the normative and adaptive developmental process in order to understand maladaptive behaviors. Age associated changes in depression symptomatology were discussed in relation to cognitive and socio-emotional development and directions for future research in childhood depression were suggested.

  • Objectives:One of the most common developmental problems is communication disorder in which a child appears normal in every way but who has failed to begin speaking or speaks very little. A few studies have examined the temperamental characteristics of children with communication disorders. This study was to investigate the temperamental characteristics of Korean children with communication disorders. Methods:The parents of 20 Korean children with communication disorders and the parents of 50 normal control children, the age of both groups ranges from 3 to 7, completed Korean version of Parental Temperamental Questionnaire developed by Thomas and Chess. Children with a pervasive developmental disorder, mental retardation, or speech-motor or sensory deficit were excluded. The scores of each temperamental scale of two groups and the diagnostic clusters of two groups were compared. Results:The children with communication disorders were characterized by lower mood scores and higher intensity of reaction scores than normal controls. The two groups showed no significant correlation in terms of the temperamental diagnostic clusters. Conclusion:This findings suggest the existence of a distinct temperamental profile of the children with communication disorders. Early detection of the profile may be of great value for parents in understanding the developmental characteristics of the children with communication disorders and in providing appropriate parenting approaches.

The Dif erence in language Development according to Childcare Type and Child Age (부모양육과 조부모 양육에서 연령에 따른 언어발달의 차이)

  • The study aimed to identify the differences in language development according to childcare type and child age. Specifically, the study aimed to confirm the difference in the language development between children whose language interactions with their parents are made normally and children whose language interactions with their parents are blocked. With this aim, the study conducted a language development test aimed at a total of 248 children consisting of 146 children raised by their parents and 102 children raised by their grandparents from among children at the age of 3 and of 4. The results obtained from the study include the following. First, the receptive language of children raised by their parents was found to be higher than that of children raised by their grandparents. Second, the expressive language of children raised by their parents was discovered to be higher than the expressive language of children raised by their grandparents. Third, the language development of children raised by their parents was shown to be higher than that of children raised by their grandparents.

Effects of Goal Management Training According to Bilateral Activities of Autism Spectrum Disorders: Pilot Study (자폐스펙트럼 장애 아동에게 목표관리 훈련이 양측활동에 미치는 영향: 예비연구)

  • The study has compared normally developed children and children who were diagnosed as autism spectrum in goal management training them to observe the effect. The research was conducted to four normally developed children and four children who were diagnosed as autism spectrum, and all subjects were provided with identical goal management training. The children and the caregivers have selected desired objectives activity, and all three activities were followed by goal management training. Intervention periods were conducted ten times in total, two times a week for five weeks, and eight subjects in the two groups were trained one on one by the researcher. The training time was 40 minutes for every session. The descriptive statistics and frequency analysis were used as the statistical method, and the Mann-Whitney test, the nonparametric statistical analysis, was conducted to compare the difference between the two groups. Goal management training for two groups did not show a statistically significant difference in terms of the performance status of Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (p>.05). In the summary of Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (2nd) which evaluates the motor skill, there was a statistically significant difference between the autism spectrum disorder group and normal group (p<.05). Additionally, the two groups showed a statistically significant difference in eye-hand coordination sub-test among Developmental Test of Visual Perception (2nd) which evaluates the visual perception performance (p<.05). The research has confirmed the applicability of goal management training to children with autism spectrum compared to the normally developed children, and it has confirmed the effectiveness of the training.

Food Behavior and Growth of Cerebral Palsy Children - A Study for the Development of Snack (간식 개발을 위한 뇌성마비 아동의 식품섭취 실태)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental information for snack development contributing to physical growth of children with cerebral palsy. The study was conducted on the children with cerebral palsy of age 1 to 7 by investigating their food behavior, physical growth development, nutritional status, and snack intake. As a result of assessing physical growth by WLI (Weight-Length Index), the proportions of the children with cerebral palsy were the following: underweight 45.5%, normal 45.5%, overweight 6.0%, and obesity 3.0%. The mothers of the children with cerebral palsy mainly bought milk and dairy products for their children's snacks (43.5%) as well as fruits (33.3%). They wanted development of new snacks that helped growth development (50.5%), and preferred more development of the following snacks: Korean rice cakes (47.5%), biscuits (24.2%), bread (22.3%). The result of dietary intake showed that the percentage of RI in zinc and folic acid did not reach the RI in every age categories. The proportion of subjects with less than 75% of RI was 76.8% for the zinc and folic acid, and 52.4% for the calcium and iron. These results indicate that children with cerebral palsy had slower physical development and lesser nutrition intake than normal children. Hence, this study provided the basis to develop the snack for the malnutrition state children with cerebral palsy which helped their physical development. The shape of new snack considered was a rice cake which included zinc and folic acid that were insufficient in RI in children with cerebral palsy.
