Monitoring of Grinding Processes by Using On-the-machine Measurement of Surface Roughness (기상에서의 표면 거칠기 측정에 의한 연삭 공정 모니터링)

  • This paper presents results of monitoring grinding processes with on-the-machine measurement of surface roughness by using nux ratios of scattered lights. A compact, on-the-machine surface roughness sensor. which consists of a diodelaser and several optic units. is developed. The control unit is also developed. The developed sensor together with the controller is applied for monitoring grinding processes of two different grinding machines. Experimental results show that the nux ratios and their standard deviations measured by the developed sensor over the entire ground surface are useful for monitoring grinding conditions. In particular, the sensor and the control unit are proved to be useful for monitoring grinding processes in order to detect abnormal grinding conditions and dressing time.

3D Modeling of Ground Surface with Statistical Method (통계적방법을 이용한 연삭표면의 3차원모델링)

  • This paper simulated surface grinding process with statistically simulated grinding wheel topography, considering ridge formation phenomenon when grain scratch workpiece. Wheel grain is modeled as hybrid sphere and cone. Grinding wheel characteristic was evaluated with stylus by expanding the scanning region of the profilometer from a straight line to a plane. Each grain's diameter and semi-angle are assumed as normal distribution, each grain's protrusion height from wheel plane is assumed gamma distribution. So grinding wheel is simulated with grain's position randomly distributed without overlapping. Ground surface is 3-dimensionally simulated considering ridge formation of workpiece by each grain's cutting, and then surface profile and surface roughness parameters are compared with real ground workpiece.

  • In this paper, machining characteristics of glass for HDD media are researched. Nowadays HDD media are used globally as a data storage device. In generally, it is machined by the lapping. But the lapping process time is long and the productivity is low. In this reason, 1 examined the possibility of ELID grinding of glass fur HDD media. If the machining process of HDD media can be changed to ELID grinding, a product cost will be largely saved. The machines used in this experiment were a special rotary type grinder and a normal rotary grinder. The one has an air bearing spindle, the other has not. Experimental results show the possibility of highly efficient grinding and mirror surface can be achieved by the ELID grinding.

  • This paper describes the characteristic of die finishing to obtain smooth surface using electro-chemical grinding after cutting process. Electro-chemical grinding is possible under lower load and tool wear comparing with those in the mechanical grinding. Conventionally, if the metal bonding material of the grinding wheel is directly t contacted with workpiece, the current is circulated without electrolytic phenomena. Sometimes, electrical discharge is occurred between tool and workpiece. To cope with this problem, the metal-resin bonded pellet was used in this study. This pellet is composed of optimal volume of metal and resin powders and its characteristics are changable with the each volume of powders. Finally, high efficient die finishing is realized using metal resin bonded pellet in electro-chemical grinding.

  • Surface roughness is one of the most important characteristics in machining processes. This study presents probabilistic models to estimate surface roughness experimentally in multi-pass horizontal surface grinding operations from three independent distributions such as the initial surface roughness distributions of workpiece, the distributions of the wheel radius, and the distributions of distances between major active grains. To specify the model characteristics from surface roughness measurements, either the probability satisfying a given surface roughness or the range of surface roughness satisfying a given probability have been estimated while grinding conditions are fixed. Finally, the relationship between grinding conditions satisfying surface roughness range under a given probability can be established.

  • This study reports the grinding characteristics of quartz. Grinding experiments were performed at various grinding conditions including wheel mesh, table speed and depth of cut. The grinding forces and specific grinding energies were measured. Surface roughness was also measured with tracer and the ground surfaces were observed with SEM. A new parameter SDR(Surface roughness Direction Ratio) is proposed to characterize the grinding mechanisms of quartz. A set of experiments was performed to verify the effectiveness of the suggested parameter. The experimental results indicate that the ductile mode is the dominant material removal mode at the grinding conditions which show the higher value of SDR whereas the material is removed by brittle fracture in a lower value of SDR value increases with wheel mesh size.

  • Although structural ceramics have excellent mectanical properties, it is very difficult to grind with high efficiency and high quality because of their high strength, hardness, and brittleness. Unfortunately machined ceramics often contain surface damages such as micro fracture and crack on account of brittle fracture. Therefore, is is important to minimize the brittle fracture. The present paper examines grinding characteristics of representative structural ceramics,such as Al /sab 2/O /sab 3/, SiC, Si /sab 3/ N /sab 4/. Effects of grinding variables including table speed and depth of cut on the grinding performance were investigated. Experimental results show that the surface quality is related to the specific grindings energy. The higher specific energy results in the better surface quality.

  • The thermal deformation of a workpiece during grinding is one of the most important factors that affect a flatness of a grinding surface. The heat generated in one-pass surface grinding causes the convex deformation of a workpiece. Therefore, the ground durfae represents a concave profile. In the analysis a simple model of the temperature distribution, based on the results of a finite element method, is applied. Theanalyzed results are compared with experimental results in surface grinding. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) The temperature distribution of a workpiece by FEM has a good agreement with the experimental results. (2) The bending moment by generated heat causes a convex deformation of the workpiece and it leads to a concave profile of the grinding surface.

  • A cone-shaped active magnetic bearing spindle system for high speed internal grinding is designed and tested. The cone-shaped AMB system consists of only 4 couples of magnet, it can be smaller and lighter than conventional radial-axial-type AMB system. In this paper, the cone-shaped electromagnets are designed by magnetic circuit theory, and de-coupled direct feedback PID controller is applied to control the coupled magnetic bearings. The designed cone-shaped AMB spindle system is built and constructed with a digital control system, and tested its stbility and dynamic performances. As the results of the tests, this spindle runs up to 40,000 rpm with about 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of runout, and the AMB system provides high damping ratio eliminating overshoot and resonance speed.

  • The special purposed materials, such as ceramics and stainless steel, are widely used in the various industrial area. They have properties of the higher strength of material, the wear-resistance, and the corrosion proof. But ceramics is a difficult-to-grind material which possesses the higher level of a strength and a brittleness. In this study, the theoretical investigation of a grinding force and of a surface roughness was conducted. The evaluations of grinding characteristics on the hardened-brittle and difficult-to-grind materials were experimentally carried out.
