Deformation behavior and microcrack development due to uniaxial compressive cyclic loading in the Pocheon granite were investigated using the ultrasonic velocity measurements and the differential strain analysis(DSA). Most microcracks were developed along the direction parallel to the loading axis. Microcracks developed at the early stage of cyclic loading were formed by propagation of pre-existing cracks. Ultrasonic velocity measurement, DSA and measurement of permanent deformation are good tools to represent microcrack development in rock. Since results from each method are slightly different, microcrack development should be interpreted from all three methods. The magnitude of microcracks developed at the early stage of cyclic loading under 80% loading level is twice compared with those under 70% loading level. The highest volumetric crack strain is about 3000, indicating that the Pocheon granite will fail with 0.3% occupation of microcrack in volume.

Non-invasive liver fibrosis diagnosis is crucial for patients with chronic liver diseases. Many patients cannot undergo liver tissue biopsy, so predicting the degree of liver fibrosis early through meaningful methods can reduce complications related to chronic liver diseases, such as liver cell carcinoma and cirrhosis. This study compared and analyzed the quantitative measurement of liver fibrosis using shear wave elastography in conjunction with liver ultrasound findings and their associations with serum biomarkers (p<0.05). The results showed that the shear wave elastography measurement in the normal group was 4.55 ± 0.69 kPa, while the abnormal contrast group with echogenic patterns had a measurement of 8.27 ± 1.83 kPa. The hepatitis B carrier group exhibited higher shear wave elastography measurements, and among serum biomarkers, AST, ALT, GGT, and PT showed statistically significant positive correlations with fibrosis severity according to SWE categories (p<0.05), while ALP and TB did not demonstrate statistically significant differences (p=0.163, p=0.567). Conversely, Albumin and PLT showed significant negative correlations (p<0.05). Clinically, utilizing shear wave elastography measurements through liver ultrasound in the tracking and repeat testing of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B patients without cirrhosis can assist in achieving more objective diagnoses among healthcare providers.
In this in vivo study, correlations of lumbar and femoral bone mineral densities (BMDs) with calcaneal speed of sound (SOS) were investigated in 36 osteoporotic women. Areal BMDs of the L2-L4 lumbar spine and the right femoral neck were measured by using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). SOS of the right calcaneus was measured by using ultrasound bone densitometry. Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) and level of significance (p) were used to evaluate the correlations between measurements. Lumbar BMD was highly correlated with femoral BMD (r=0.81). Lumbar and femoral BMDs exhibited similar comparable negative correlations with age (r=-0.52 and r=-0.55). A moderate negative correlation was found between calcaneal SOS and age (r=-0.45). Calcaneal SOS was significantly correlated with lumbar and femoral BMDs, with a higher correlation with femoral BMD rather than with lumbar BMD (r=0.54 and r=0.62). However, calcaneal SOS may not be an optimum index for the estimation of BMD of the most important fracture sites, such as the lumbar and the femur, because it showed lower correlations with lumbar and femoral BMDs compared to that with calcaneal BMD. Therefore, the development of a quantitative ultrasound technology for the direct measurement of acoustic properties at the lumbar and the femur is required to estimate BMD of these sites more accurately.
In the present study, polyacetal bone mimics with circular cylindrical pores were used to investigate variations of speed of sound and attenuation coefficient with porosity and microarchitecture in bone. The speed of sound and attenuation coefficient of the 6 bone mimics with porosities from 0 % to 65.9 % were measured by a through-transmission method in water, using a pair of broadband, unfocused transducers with a diameter of 12.7 mm and a center frequency of 1.0 MHz. Independently of the structural properties of the bone mimics, the speed of sound decreased almost linearly with the increasing porosity. The attenuation coefficient measured at 1.0 MHz exhibited linear or nonlinear correlations with the porosity, depending on the structural properties of the bone mimics. These results are consistent with those previously published by other researchers using bone samples and mimics, and advances our understanding of the relationships of the ultrasonic parameters for the diagnosis of osteoporosis with the bone density and microarchitecture in human bones.

In case of tissue characterization from ultrasonic echo signal, it is difficult to evaluate an absolute physical quantity because of redundancy in the echo signal. For it, in this paper a possibility of characterization of ultrasonic velocity distribution in multilayered medium using dip points analysis method from the reflected echo spectrum is discussed. To prove the possibility of this method, effect of interference phenomenon, impedance difference, attenuation, and thickness is discussed by computer simulation, and then the results confirm the effectiveness. And results of simple experiment are presented.

Ultrasonography of benign prostatic hypertrophy(BPH) has been used a lot to determine the size of the prostate with a biopsy. In this study, we measured the size of the prostate in a proportion of the transition zone and the peripheral zone quantitatively, we propose a method that can be diagnosed with BPH automatically ultrasound image.

It was attempted to evaluate the microstructure and quality of various types of cast iron by ultrasonic velocity measurement. Three types of commercial gray cast iron and ductile cast iron were used for this investigation, respectively. One type of the ductile cast iron was heat-treated as a function of annealing time to produce different microstructure. Ultrasonic velocity measurement, microstructural analysis (pearlite area fraction, graphite length and nodularity), and hardness measurement were performed to find empirical correlations among these parameters. Ultrasonic velocity of ductile cast iron was markedly faster than that of gray cast iron. Ultrasonic velocity decreased with the decrease of fraction of pearlite structure. As a quality monitoring parameter of cast iron, potential of ultrasonic velocity was suggested.
In this paper, we have introduced the feature extraction for the ultrasonic signal analysis of the undamaged and damaged concrete specimens. Since the concrete has the heterogeneous nature by itself, it has been difficult to classify the feature with using ultrasonic signal which is acquired from the undamaged and damaged concrete specimens. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed the combinational analysis which is using both the damage coefficient and the number of zerocrossing for the feature extraction. And the pulse velocity method and the damage coefficient, which was proposed by Suaris, were reviewed. In this experiment, two types of concrete specimen have been considered: 180kg/㎠ and 240kg/㎠. The ultrasonic signals were acquired in normal direction. As a result, it has been that combinational analysis method, which is proposed in this paper, shows the better performance than the traditional ultrasonic pulse velocity method and the damage coefficient using maximum amplitude of the ultrasonic signal in the feature extraction.

Friction welding has emerged as a reliable process for high-production commercial application with significant economic and technical advantages. But nondestructive test in friction weld was not clearly developed. Therefore the experimental verification is necessary in order to understand the characteristics of the pulse echo effects according to various change in welding conditions. This paper presents a new attempt to detect the bond strength of friction welds by ultrasonic. Instead of looking for a flaw or cracks at the interface, the new approach evaluates the coefficient by reflection which provides a single quantitative indicator involving the acoustic energy reflected at the interface. The objective of this study is to find the relationship between the reflection coefficients and the weld strength. Results of the bar-to-bar friction welding of aluminum to copper and stainless steel and such relationship investigation are presented and interpreted.
