Purpose: This study investigated the differences between technetium-99m ethyl cysteinate dimer (Tc-99m ECD) and technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (Tc-99m HMPAO) uptake in the normal brain by means of statistical parametric mapping (SPM) analysis. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed age and sex matched 53 cases of normal brain SPECT. Thirty-two cases were obtained with Tc-99m ECD and 21 cases with Tc-99m HMPAO. There were no abnormal findings on brain MRIs. All of the SPECT images were spatially transformed to standard space, smoothed and globally normalized. The differences between the Tc-99m ECD and Tc-99m HMPAO SPECT images were statistically analyzed using statistical parametric mapping (SPM'99) software. The differences bgetween the two groups were considered significant ant a threshold of corrected P values less than 0.05. Results: SPM analysis revealed significantly different uptakes of Tc-99m ECD and Tc-99m HMPAO in the normal brains. On the Tc-99m ECD SPECT images, relatively higher uptake was observed in the frontal, parietal and occipital lobes, in the basal ganglia and thalamus, and in the superior region of the cerebellum. On the Tc-99m HMPAO SPECT images, relatively higher uptakes was observed in subcortical areas of the frontal region, temporal lobe, and posterior portion of inferior cerebellum. Conclusion: Uptake of Tc-99m ECD and Tc-99m HMPO in the normallooking brain was significantly different on SPM analysis. The selective use of Tc-99m ECD of Tc-99m HMPAO in brain SPECT imaging appears especially valuable for the interpretation of cerebral perfusion. Further investigation is necessary to determine which tracer is more accurate for diagnosing different clinical conditions.

Purpose: A various find of radiotherapy treatment plans have been made to determine appropriate doses for breasts, chest walls and loco-regional lymphatics in the radiotherapy of breast cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the optimum radiotherapy plan technique method by analyzing dose distributions qualitatively and quantitatively. Materials and Methods: To evaluate the optimum breast cancer radiotherapy plan technique, the traditional method(two dimensional method) and computed tomography image are adopted to get breast volume, and they are compared with the three-dimensional conformal radiography (3DCRT) and the intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). For this, the regions of interest (ROI) such as breasts, chest walls, loco-regional lymphatics and lungs were marked on the humanoid phantom, and the computed tomography(Volume, Siemens, USA) was conducted. Using the computed tomography image obtained, radiotherapy treatment plans (XiO 5.2.1, FOCUS, USA) were made and compared with the traditional methods by applying 3DCRT and IMRT. The comparison and analysis were made by analyzing and conducting radiation dose distribution and dose-volume histogram (DVH) based upon radiotherapy techniques (2D, 3DCRT, IMRT) and point doses for the regions of interest. Again, treatment efficiency was evaluated based upon time-labor. Results: It was found that the case of using 3DCRT plan techniques by getting breast volume is more useful than the traditional methods in terms of tumor delineation, beam direction and confirmation of field boundary. Conclusion: It was possible to present the optimum radiotherapy plan techniques through qualitative and quantitative analyses based upon radiotherapy plan techniques in case of breast cancer radiotherapy. However, further studies are required for the problems with patient setup reproducibility arising from the difficulties of planning target volume (PVT) and breast immobilization in case of three-dimensional radiotherapy planning.
To image diagnosis in neurovascular diseases using Multi-Detector Computed Tomography(MDCT), injected the same contrast material when inspecting Brain Computed Tomography Angiography(BCTA) to examine radiation dose and Image quality on changing Cerebral Artery CT number by tube voltage. Executed an examination with same condition[Beam Collimation $128{\times}0.6mm$, Pitch 0.6, Rotation Time 0.5s, Slice Thickness 5.0mm, Increment 5.0mm, Delay Time 3.0sec, Care Dose 4D(Demension ; D)] except for tube voltage on 50 call patients for BCTA and divided them into two groups (25 people for a group, group A: 80, group B: 120kVp). From all the acquired images, set a ROI(Region of Interest) on four spots such as left cerebral artery, right cerebral artery, posterior cerebral artery and cerebral parenchyma to compare quantitative evaluation, qualitative evaluation and effective dose after measuring CT number value from Picture Archiving Communications System(PACS). Evaluating images with CT number acquired from BCTA examination, images with 80 kVp was 18% higher in Signal to Noise Ratio and 19% in Contrast to Noise Ratio than those with 120 kVp. It was seen that expose dose was decreased by over 50% with tube voltage 80 kVp than with 120 kVp. Group A (25 patients) was examination with tube voltage 80kVp while group B with 120 kVp to examine radiation dose and Image quality. It is considered effective to inspect with lower tube voltage than with conventional high kVp, which can reduce radiation dose without any affect on diagnosis.
We intended to evaluate the Young's modulus of trabecular bone of a human distal femur by spherical Indentation test and CT images and to quantify relationships between the direction of load, density. and Young's modulus. The specimens were scanned at 1 mm intervals on CT scanner After scanning the bones were sectioned with diamond saw. producing 8mm cubes of trabecular bone. The tubes were mechanically tested in inferior-superior(IS), anterior-posterior(AP). and medial-lateral(ML) direction with custom-made device. After testing, the real apparent density of specimens were measured. The results of this study showed that the IS modulus was significant1y greater than both the AP and ML modulus and the AP modulus was also greater than ML modulus significantly(p〈0.01) A significant Power relationship between the apparent density and the modulus was also found.
One of the typical methods for lowering radiation dose while maintaining image quality of computed tomography (CT) is the use of model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR). This study is to evaluate the image quality by adjusting the strength of the advanced modeled iterative reconstruction (ADMIRE), which is well known as a representative model of MBIR. The study was conducted using phantom, and CT images were obtained while adjusting the strength of ADMIRE in units of 1 to 5. Quantitative evaluation includes noise levels using coefficient of variation (COV) and contrast to noise ratio (CNR), as well as natural image quality evaluation (NIQE) and blind/referenceless image spatial quality evaluator (BRISQUE). As a result, in both noise level and blind quality evaluation results, the higher the strength of ADMIRE, the better the results were derived. In particular, it was confirmed that COV and CNR were improved 1.89 and 1.75 times at ADMIRE 5 compared to ADMIRE 1, respectively, and NIQE and BRISQUE were proved to be improved 1.35 and 1.22 times at ADMIRE 5 compared to ADMIRE 1, respectively. In conclusion, this study was proved that the reconstruction strength of ADMIRE had a great influence on the noise level and overall image quality evaluation of CT images.
Purpose : The Dual-Energy Quantitative Computed Tomography(DEQCT) was compared with bone equivalent $K_2HPO_4$ standard solution and ash weight of animal cadaveric trabecular bone in the measurement of bone mineral contents(BMC). Method and Materials : The attenuation coefficient of tissues highly depends on the radiation energy density and effective atomic number of composition, The bone mineral content of DEQCT in this experiments was determined from empirical constants and mass attenuation coefficients of bone, fat and soft tissue equivalent solution in two photon spectra. In this experiments, the BMC of DEQCT with 80 and $120kV_p$ X rays was compared to ash weight of animal trabecular bone. Results : We obtained the mass attenuation coefficient of 0.2409 0.5608 and 0.2206 in $80kV_p$, and 0.2046, 0.3273 and $0.1971cm^2/g$ in $120kV_p$ X-ray spectra for water bone and fat equivalent materials, respectively. The BMC with DEQCT was acomplished with empirical constants $K_1=0.3232,\;K_2$=0.2450 and mass attenuation coefficients has very closed to ash weight of animal trabecular bone The BMC of empirical DEQCT and that of manufacturing DEQCT were correlated with ash weight as a correlation r= 0.998 and r= 0.996, respectively. Conclusion : The BMC of empirical DEQCT using the experimental mass attenuation coefficients and that of manufacture have showed very close to ash weight of animal trabecular bone.
In this study, texture feature analysis (TFA) algorithm to automatic recognition of liver disease suggests by utilizing computed tomography (CT), by applying the algorithm computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) design. Proposed the performance of each algorithm was to comparison and evaluation. In the HCC image, set up region of analysis (ROA, window size was $40{\times}40$ pixels) and by calculating the figures for TFA algorithm of the six parameters (average gray level, average contrast, measure of smoothness, skewness, measure of uniformity, entropy) HCC recognition rate were calculated. As a result, TFA was found to be significant as a measure of HCC recognition rate. Measure of uniformity was the most recognition. Average contrast, measure of smoothness, and skewness were relatively high, and average gray level, entropy showed a relatively low recognition rate of the parameters. In this regard, showed high recognition algorithms (a maximum of 97.14%, a minimum of 82.86%) use the determining HCC imaging lesions and assist early diagnosis of clinic. If this use to therapy, the diagnostic efficiency of clinical early diagnosis better than before. Later, after add the effective and quantitative analysis, criteria research for generalized of disease recognition is needed to be considered.
Sparse-view computed tomography (CT) imaging technique is able to reduce radiation dose, ensure the uniformity of image characteristics among projections and suppress noise. However, the reconstructed images obtained by the sparse-view CT imaging technique suffer from severe artifacts, resulting in the distortion of image quality and internal structures. In this study, we proposed a convolutional neural network (CNN) with wavelet transformation and residual learning for reducing artifacts in sparse-view CT image, and the performance of the trained model was quantitatively analyzed. The CNN consisted of wavelet transformation, convolutional and inverse wavelet transformation layers, and input and output images were configured as sparse-view CT images and residual images, respectively. For training the CNN, the loss function was calculated by using mean squared error (MSE), and the Adam function was used as an optimizer. Result images were obtained by subtracting the residual images, which were predicted by the trained model, from sparse-view CT images. The quantitative accuracy of the result images were measured in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM). The results showed that the trained model is able to improve the spatial resolution of the result images as well as reduce artifacts in sparse-view CT images effectively. Also, the trained model increased the PSNR and SSIM by 8.18% and 19.71% in comparison to the imaging model trained without wavelet transformation and residual learning, respectively. Therefore, the imaging model proposed in this study can restore the image quality of sparse-view CT image by reducing artifacts, improving spatial resolution and quantitative accuracy.
The use of tin filters as a way to reduce the medical radiation in computed tomography (CT). However, due to the changed X-ray spectrum with the use of tin filters, disease diagnosis could be affected because it appears as images of different impressions from previous images. Therefore, this study evaluates the changes in images when using tin filter and high pitch in chest low-dose CT. In this study, images were acquired in groups of three for comparison. Group 1 did not apply to tin filter, and used the existing pitch 0.8. Group 2 used a tin filter, pitch 0.8, Group 3 used a tin filter, and pitch 2.5. To compare the image quality, the natural image quality evaluator (NIQE) and the blind/referenceless image quality evaluator (BRISQUE) were used among the blind quality evaluation factors depended on a no-reference basis. As a result, the NIQE values were low in the order of Group 1, Group 3, and Group 2. BRISQUE values were low in the order of Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This study confirms the superiority of images of tin filter and high pitch techniques in chest low-dose CT, which is considered to be a fundamental study for acquiring accurate images of patients with difficult breathing control.
Iterative reconstruction methods have played a prominent role in emission computed tomography due to their remarkable advantages over the conventional filtered backprojection method. However, since iterative reconstructions typically are comprised of repeatedly projecting and backprojecting the data, the computational load required for reconstructing an image depends highly on the performance of the projector-backprojector pair used in the algorithm. In this work we compare quantitative performance of representative methods for implementing projector-backprojector pairs. To reduce the overall cost for the projection-backprojection operations for each method, we investigate how previously computed results can be reused so that the number of redundant calculations can be minimized. Our experimental results demonstrate that the ray tracing method not only outperforms other methods in computation time, but also provides improved reconstructions with good accuracy.
