Cyclic Seismic Testing of Cruciform Concrete-Filled U-Shape Steel Beam-to-H Column Composite Connections (콘크리트채움 U형합성보-H형강기둥 십자형 합성접합부의 내진성능)

  • In this research, the seismic connection details for two concrete-filled U-shape steel beam-to-H columns were proposed and cyclically tested under a full-scale cruciform configuration. The key connecting components included the U-shape steel section (450 and 550 mm deep for specimens A and B, respectively), a concrete floor slab with a ribbed deck (165 mm deep for both specimens), welded couplers and rebars for negative moment transfer, and shear studs for full composite action and strengthening plates. Considering the unique constructional nature of the proposed connection, the critical limit states, such as the weld fracture, anchorage failure of the welded coupler, local buckling, concrete crushing, and rebar buckling, were carefully addressed in the specimen design. The test results showed that the connection details and design methods proposed in this study can well control the critical limit states mentioned above. Especially, the proposed connection according to the strengthening strategy successfully pushed the plastic hinge to the tip of the strengthened zone, as intended in the design, and was very effective in protecting the more vulnerable beam-to-column welded joint. The maximum story drift capacities of 6.0 and 6.8% radians were achieved in specimens A and B, respectively, thus far exceeding the minimumlimit of 4% radians required of special moment frames. Low-cycle fatigue fracture across the beam bottom flange at a 6% drift level was the final failure mode of specimen A. Specimen B failed through the fracture of the top splice plate of the bolted splice at a very high drift ratio of 8.0% radian.

  • BIM(Building Information Modeling) enables 3D model-base management for all information produced by construction project during its life cycle. Also as a national policy, BIM has been institutionalized as design criteria. But, on the matter of 2D drawing using BIM software (Revit Architecture), it has been recognized as difficult to realize the same quality drawing drawn by CAD. The purpose of this study is verifying the possibility of printable design drawing implemented by BIM software at the same quality of 2D shop drawing drawn by 2D CAD. Through the analysis of basic design elements of 3D BIM software and 2D CAD software, with the case of partial cross sectional drawing which is most faithful representation of the basic design elements, this study find out that the 3D BIM software can produce the same quality 2D printable drawing utilizing its implicit function.

Experimental Study on Double Skin Composite Walls Subjected to Cyclic Loading (주기하중을 받는 이중강판합성벽의 실험연구)

  • Double skin composite (DSC) wall is a structural wall that is filed with concrete between two steel plate skins connected by tie bars. This type of wall was developed to enhance the structural performance of wall, to reduce wall thickness, and to enhance constructibility, eliminating the use of formwork and re-bars. In this study, cyclic tests were performed to investigate the inelastic behavior and earthquake resistance of isolated and coupled DSC walls with rectangular and T-shapedcross-sections. The DSC walls showed stable cyclic behaviors, exhibiting excellent energy dissipation capacity. The te st specimens failed by the tensile fracture of welded joints at the wall base and coupling beam and by the severe local buckling of the steel plate. The deformation capacity of the walls varied with the connection details at the wall base and their cross-sectional shapes. The specimens with well-detailed connections at the wall base showed relatively god deformation capacity ranging from 2.0% to 3.7% drift ratio. The load-carrying capacities of the isolated and coupled wall specimens were evaluated considering their inelastic behavior. The results were compared with the test results.

Cyclic Seismic Testing of Steel Moment Connections Reinforced with Welded Straight Haunch (용접 수평헌치로 보강된 철골 모멘트 접합부의 반복재하 내진실험)

  • Recently a simplified design procedure as well as load transfer model for seismic steel moment connections with welded straight haunch have been proposed by Lee and Uang. Cyclic seismic testing was conducted to verify the proposed design procedure and to develop the details that will prevent the cracking at the haunch tip, where stress concentration was the highest. All the specimens thus designed effectively pushed plastic hinging away from the haunch tip and were able to develop satisfactory plastic rotation capacity of 0.04 radian with no fracture. A sloped edge combined with drilling a hole near the haunch tip or a pair of stiffeners(partially or fully) extended from the beam web successfully prevented the crack initiation at the haunch tip. The strut action of the haunch web, which had been predicted from the previous analytical study, was also experimentally identified through the strain gage readings.

Verification of Reinforcing Arrangement Error in Precast Concrete Shear Walls Using BIM and Presentation of Flexural Ductility Model (BIM을 이용한 프리캐스트 콘크리트 전단벽의 배근 오류 검증 및 휨 연성 모델 제시)

  • This study established a BIM procedure considering manufacturing errors in the production process, and evaluated the flexural ductility of precast all-lightweight aggregate concrete special shear walls (PLASWs) with spliced sleeve technique. In the production process, the concrete cover thickness of PALSW was on average 1.28 times greater than the cross-sectional details of the specimen modeled with Revit BIM program. In particular, the bending inner radius of the hoop and inner-cross tie were greater than the designed details. Consequently, the confinement effect of core concrete reduced from 64% to 54% due to the manufacturing errors in the transverse reinforcing bars, resulting in a decrease in the ductility of PALSW by approximately 4.91%. Considering these findings, the BIM of PLASW with spliced sleeve technique should compliment the bending inner radius of the transverse reinforcing bars, and the defined brittleness increase coefficient reflecting the decreased core concrete confining pressure in the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete should be evaluated as 1.8.

  • In this study, seismic resistance of concrete encased U-shaped steel beam-to-steel H-shaped column connections was evaluated. Three specimens of the beam-to-column connection were tested under cyclic loading. The composite beam was integrated with concrete slab using studs. Re-bars for negative moment were placed in the slab. The primary test parameter was the details of the connections, which are strengthening and weakening strategies for the beam end and the degree of composite action. The depth of the composite beams was 600mm including the slab thickness. The steel beam and the re-bars in the slab were weld-connected to the steel column. For the strengthening strategy, cover plates were weld-connected to the bottom and top flanges of the steel beam. For the weakening strategy, a void using styrofoam box was located inside the core concrete at the potential plastic hinge zone. The test results showed that the fully composite specimens exhibited good strength, deformation, and energy dissipation capacities. The deformation capacity of the beam exceeded 4% rotation angle, which is the requirement for the Special Moment Frame.

Cyclic Loading Test for TSC Beam - PSRC Column Connections (TSC 합성보 - PSRC 합성기둥 접합부에 대한 주기하중 실험)

  • In the present study, details of the TSC beam-to-PSRC column connection for low and middle seismic zones were developed. For ease construction, the top and bottom flanges of the steel section of the TSC beam were discontinuous at the joint face on purpose, while the web passes through the joint. Thus, tensile resistance of the top and bottom flanges is not considered in the calculation of nominal strength of the connection. Cyclic loading tests on two interior connections and an exterior connection were performed to verify the seismic performance. The test parameter for two interior connections was the depth of the TSC beams: 600 and 700 mm including the slab depth. The test results showed that the nominal strength of the connections predicted by KBC 2009 correlated well with the test results. The connection specimens exhibited relatively good deformation and energy dissipation capacities, greater than the requirements for the ordinary and intermediate moment frames. Ultimately, the connection specimens were failed at the story drift ratios of 3.0 to 4.0 % due to local buckling and tensile fracture of the web of the TSC beam passing through the joint. By modifying the existing provisions of ASCE, the joint shear strength of the TSC beam-PSRC column connection was evaluated.

Cyclic Testing of Bracket and WUF-B Type Weak-Axis Steel Moment Connections (브라켓 및 WUF-B 형식 철골모멘트골조 약축접합부 내진성능평가)

  • There has been much focus on the strong axis steel moment connections after the Northridge earthquake in 1994. However, research studieson the seismic behavior of weak axis moment connections could be hardly found despite the fact that these connection details have been frequently used as seismic details of MRF in Korea. Therefore, the objective of this research is to provide better knowledge on the seismic behavior of weak-axis steel moment connections, which can be widely applicable to many structures with similar characteristics. For this purpose, an experimental program was designed and performed with twotypes of weak-axis steel moment connections, namely the bracket type and WUF-B type, based on the survey of existing field data and literatures. Using the experimental results obtained from the quasi-static cyclic testing of these specimens, structural performances of the joints such as hysteretic curves, maximum strength capacities and the strain of reinforced bars were investigated. From the test results, the bracket-type connection was shown to have more than a 5% story drift capacity, compared with the WUF-B type connection's 4%. These specimens were also shown to have higher strength capacities than the nominal design strength. The bracket-type connection showed a slow strength degradation after maximum strength was researched. However,the WUF-B type connection showed a rapid strength degradation that caused brittle behavior.

  • This paper describes new analytical modeling for steel moment connections with welded straight haunch. Among a variety of new details for seismic steel moment connections proposed after the 1994 Northridge and the 1995 Hyogo-Ken Nanbu earthquake, one viable solution was to strengthen the connection by adding a triangular haunch on the bottom side of the beam. However, a simpler design has been called for because of the increased labor associated with fitting the triangular haunch. Adding a straight haunch is one alternative. But a mathematical model that forms the design basis is not available. A simplified analytical model that considers the force interaction and deformation compatibility between the beam and haunch is developed in this study. The proposed modeling predicted quite reasonably the interaction forces at the beam-haunch interface and the flexural stresses in the beam and haunch flange groove welds.

  • Recently, an urgent issue of the global environment in the 21st century is the well-established paradigm of a sustainable and circulatory system. In the field of construction, it is important to approach sustainablity issues from a structural engineering point of view. The reusable steel structural system, which can adapt to changes in socio-economic conditions and varied demands, realized that the consumption of natural resources was minimized, the environmental load was reduced as much as possible. In order to reuse and recombinant the structural members, removable PC slab connection was introduced. This paper investigates the structural performance and serviceability by the dynamic characteristics of the steel beam to concrete slab connection.
