  • The method for fatigue life prediction of ball bearing is proposed applying the algorithm of contact fatigue prediction based on stress analysis. In order to do this, a series of simulation such as initial surface stress analysis, EHL analysis, subsurface stress analysis and fatigue analysis are conducted from the loading at each ball location calculated for a bearing subjected to external bearing load and contact shape function. And uniaxial fatigue tests are performed to obtain fatigue parameter of AISI 52100 steel. It was found that since stress is usually higher at the inner raceway contact than at the outer raceway contact, fatigue failure occurs on the inner raceway first. When the fatigue life calculated in the stress-based method are compared with $L_{50}$ life of L-P model, Crossland criterion for the radial load increment is similar to $L_{50}$ life and Dang Van criterion for the axial load increment is similar. In the case of EHL contact. there is no difference of fatigue life between dry contact and EHL contact, when maximum Hertz pressure exceeds 2.5GPa.

  • Various heat treatment and surface coating methods have been applied to machine parts. Nowadays, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings are widely used because of their excellent tribological characteristics. Despite the numerous studies on DLC-coated engineering surfaces, the exact wear mechanisms related to the coating thickness and elastic modulus have not been fully examined. In this study, a sliding contact problem between a small spherical hard particle and a DLC-coated steel surface is analyzed using a nonlinear finite element code, MARC. The maximum principal stress distributions and deformed surfaces are compared for different coating thicknesses and Young's modulus values. Plastically deformed surface shapes such as a groove and torus indicate that the most dominant wear mechanism for a DLC-coated surface is abrasive wear. Fatigue wear can also play a role in a case where the coating thickness is relatively large and the elastic modulus is high.

  • Ion beam assisted deposition system was used to deposit CNx coatings with various thickness on the substrates of high-frequency induction hardened steels. Rolling contact fatigue tests were performed using Polymet RCF-1 machine with a constant supply of lubricant. Rolling contact fatigue life was substantially different in the steels with various thickness of CNx coatings. The optimum thickness of CNx coating was found to be $8.9{\mu}m$, showing the longest fatigue life, mainly caused by higher resistance to initiation of cracks and protective overcoat remaining to the surface failure during rolling contact fatigue. Cracks were initiated in the substrates under the surface of wear track and propagated to the surface, which eventually resulted in the failure. The reduction of fatigue life observed in the specimen with elimination of CNx coating during rolling contact fatigue was explained by the substrates deformation.

  • The history of illumination has been much long since the discovery of lamplight caused huge changes in human lives. However, the swift development of the illumination actually started with the invention of a carbon filament lamp by Thomas Edison in 1878. Generally, the illumination tools plays important roles in human lives such as reduction of fatigue, improvement of safety and working efficiency, and the creation of enjoyable atmosphere. But, the illumination tools can be an origin of the fire due to carelessness and lack of management. In this study, the principle and structure of the illumination lamp were dealt with. The possibility of the fire outbreak caused by the incandescent lamp and fluorescent lamp most used in home was investigated. The examples of the fire outbreaks by the incandescent and fluorescent lamps and by the contact between the inflammable materials and the distributing wires were mentioned and demonstrated by the experimental.

  • Effect of retained austenite on rolling contact fatigue of nitrocarburized high-carbon chromium bearing steel has been investigated to develop surface-hardened bearing steel with imprved resistance to rolling contact fatigue. Fatigue tests were conducted in elesto-hydrodynamic lubricating conditions at a shaft speed of 5,000rpm, under max, hertzian stress of $492kg/mm^2$. Volume fraction of retained austenite in austenitic nitrocarburized STB2 steel was controlled by tempering at various temperature, $200{\sim}250^{\circ}C$. It was observed using TEM that decomposition of retained austenite during tempering at $250^{\circ}C$ was the highest in quantity, resulted in formation of lower bainite. Rolling contact fatigue life of the specimens with lower bainite, formed by decomposition of retained austenite, was improved in comparison with there of specimens with more amount of retained austenite.

  • The authors performed a experimental study to evaluate the effects of masticatory muscle fatigue on tooth contact and masticatory muscle activity in 26 normal healthy women. The experimental masticatory muscle fatigue was induced by unilateral biting of 5kg force on mandibular first molar. The results were as follows : 1. The initial symptom related to muscle fatigue pain appeared in 85.19 seconds of isometric contraction and the endurance time of isometric contraction was 203.15 seconds. 2. The pain occurred more frequently in masseter region than in temporal region. In masseter pain the incidence was almost equal between both sides, whereas the temporal pain was more in contralateral side. 3. The spontaneity and the symmetry of tooth contact during maximum clenching were reduced after isometric unilateral biting. 4. After induction of experimental muscle fatigue, the EMG activities of masseter muscles of both sides and ipsilateral temporal muscle showed the tendency of decreasing activities. 5. The asymmetry indicies of masseter and temporal muscles were reduced after isometric bilateral biting.

  • Girth gears are applied in the mining, cement, and mineral processing industries and used in various types of horizontal mills, rotary dryers and kilns, and other heavy-gear ring applications. The large ring gears are normally fitted outside mills or kilns to provide the primary rotational drive. Recently, an external pinwheel gear set (e-PGS) was introduced to overcome manufacturing problems associated with girth gears. e-PGS is also suitable for low-speed, heavy-duty mechanical transmission and dusty and poor-lubrication conditions. This paper first presents a new profile modification of root relief for the e-PGS cam pinion. We then investigate load-stress factors to estimate the surface fatigue life by varying the shape design parameters. The results show that the contact fatigue life of an e-PGS can be extended significantly by increasing the profile shift coefficient. However, support bearing life of the pinwheel depends more on the contact force distribution than the profile shift coefficient.

  • The crack that occurs on the wheels of railroad cars can be categorized into a surface crack that starts from the surface or a subsurface crack that starts from the inside and can be detrimental to safe railroad operations. Therefore, estimating the growth life span of this type of crack is very important. In this research, the stress distributions, displacements, and the growth-life spans of both surface cracks and subsurface cracks have been studied. By using the finite element analysis, especially in the life span prediction process, the stress conditions and the stress intensity factors of the crack tip have been discovered. The Paris formula has been used to analyze the growth-life span prediction.

  • The purposes of this paper is to propose new techniques to reconstruct measured optical images by using the template matching and B-Spline interpolation method based on image processing technology. To do this, we detect the matching template and non-matching template from each optical image. And then, we match the overlaped images from base level by correcting roll, pitch, and yaw error of images. At last, the matching image is interpolated by B-Spline interpolation. Finally, we show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method through some experiments.
