  • This paper is the study on stress analysis of spur gear using a finite element method. Gear drives constitute very important mechanisms in transmitting mechanical power processes compromising several cost effective and engineering advantages. The load transmission occurred by the contacting surfaces arises variable elastic deformations which are being evaluated through finite element analysis. The automatic gear design program is developed to model gear shape precisely. This gear design system developed was used by pre-processor of FEM packages. The distribution of stresses at contacting surfaces was examined when a pair of gear contact.

  • In the analysis of impulsive response of plate, Lagrange's theory, Reissner's theory and Mindlin's theory are generally used. But, in applying these theories the impulsive stresses directly underneath the concentrated impact point cannot be analyzed because the solution fails to converge. In this paper, therefore, an attempt for a supported square plate is made by using three-dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity on the supposition that the uniform distributed load acts on the central part of it. In order to clarify the validity of theoretical analysis, the strain variations are measured experimentally for a square glass plate. Finally it is shown that these theoretical results are in close agreement with the experimental results.

  • This study evaluated the displacements of a Cu bar in the Y-direction and the relationship between swaging pressures and total contact forces to increase the productivity of the rotor core swaging process. Elastic-plastic numerical analyses of four different Cu bar shapes were performed with a constant swaging pressure to evaluate the displacements of the Cu bar in the Y-direction and the contact force distributions at the contact surfaces during the swaging process. Based on the numerical analysis results, the following conclusions were obtained. First, a simplified 2-dimensional cyclic symmetric analysis model was developed for the numerical analysis of the rotor core swaging process. Second, the final displacements of the Cu bar in the Y-direction were nearly the same as the change of the Cu bar size at a constant swaging pressure. Third, a linear relationship between the swaging pressures and the total contact forces, the so called resistance forces, was suggested.

  • This paper describes stress analysis and fatigue limit evaluation of plate with V-notch and hole-notch by lock-in infrared thermography. Temperature variation of a specimen under cyclic loading is negatively proportional to the sum of principle stress change and the surface temperature measured by infrared camera is calculated to the stress of notch specimens, based on thermoelastic equation. And also, fatigue limitation can be evaluated by the change of intrinsic energy dissipation. Fatigue limitation of two notch specimens is evaluated as 164 MPa and 185 MPa, respectively and the stress measured by Lock-in infrared Thermography show good agreement within 10% error.

  • This paper deals with a numerical study of the tribological contact stress distributions of elastomeric lip seals for oscillating shafts when the sealing interference and band width between the lip ease or contact seals and the shaft are present. Using the finite element method the contact stress and band width of scraper seals are analyzed for the sealing interference including some nonlinearities such as geometrical nonlinearity, material nonlinearity and nonlinear contact boundary condition. The FEM results showed that the contact stress concentrated on the contacting lip zone between the contacting edge of lip and the shaft for the increased interference. In double lip scraper seals, ole maximum contact stress of the dust lip, which is used to exclude foreign contaminants is six times higher than that of the primary sealing lip, which is used to contain lubricants.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate geometric effect on the contact stress at a lip seal. The geometries of interest were angle, thickness of lip seal and width of contact surface. The contact stress was calculated by using a coupled thermo-mechanical analysis method. The friction thermal load between lip seal and sleeve was adopted to design load. Based on the FEA results, design variables for controlling the maximum contact stress at the lip seal were identified.

  • The contact stress characteristics of the domestic CPF pin when inserted into the rigid PTH was analyzed using the finite element method. The model geometry was based on the shape of the existing pin and the two different PTH diameters were used in the analysis. The stress distributions with respect to the friction coefficients were compared and the stress variations of the compliant part of the pin, which have an influence on the performance, were displayed with the time and the arc length on complete connection.

  • In the shrink or press fitted shaft such as railway axle, fretting can occur by cyclic stress and micro-slippage due to local movement between the shaft and the hub. When the fretting occurs in the press fitted shaft, the fatigue strength remarkably decreases compared with that of without fretting. In this paper, the analysis of contact stresses in a press fitted shaft in contact with a hub was conducted by finite element method and the micro-slip according to the bending load was analyzed. It is found that the largest stress concentration and maximum slip amplitude of shrink fitted shaft are found at the edge of the interface and the distribution of contact stresses at the contact edge has largely influenced and coefficient of friction.

  • This paper presents the study on the contact stress analysis of a pair of mating spur gears during rotation. Contact stress analysis is performed between two spur gear teeth at different contact positions during rotation. An example is presented to investigate the variation of contact stress on a pair of mating gears with contact positions. The variation of contact stress during rotation is compared with the contact stress at lowest point of single tooth contact(LPSTC) and AGMA Equation for contact stress. The results show that contact stress varies along the contact position and gets maximum values in the beginning and end of the contact. In this study, the gear design considering the contact stress on a pair of mating gears is more severe than that of AGMA standard.
