Strut-and-tie models for noncontact lap splices are presented and parameters affecting the effective lap length $(l_p)$ and the splice strength are discussed in this paper. The effective lap length along which bond stress is developed is shorter than the whole lap length. The effective lap length depends on the transverse reinforcement ratio $({\Phi})$ and the ratio of spacing to lap length $({\alpha})$. As the splice-bar spacing becomes wider, the effective lap length decreases and, therefore, the splice strength decreases. The influence of the ratio ${\alpha}$ on the effective lap length becomes more effective when the transverse reinforcement ratio is low. Because the slope of the strut developed between splice-bars becomes steeper as the ratio ${\Phi}$ becomes lower, the splice-bar spacing significantly affects the effective lap length. The proposed strut-and-tie models for noncontact lap splices are capable of considering material and geometric properties and, hence, providing the optimal design for detailing of reinforcements. The proposed strut-and-tie model can explain the experimental results including cracking patterns and the influence of transverse reinforcements on the splice strength reported in the literature. From the comparison with the test results of 25 specimens, the model can predict the splice strengths with 11.1% of coefficient of variation.

The object of this study is to develop new examination techniques for measuring the O-ring deformation behavior under the pressure condition. The extrusion lengths measured from the computed tomography were in good agreement with the results that measured from non-contact laser displacement sensor. The deformed shapes of O-ring measured by the computed tomography and evaluated by the FEM agreed well with the extrusion length and the expanded diameter. But the contact widths of the O-ring and steel measured by the computed tomography were a little larger than the results of the FEM.
This paper focuses on the conformal contact problem. A typical example of conformal contact is the contact between a pin and hole. In particular, this paper focuses on the condition for assuming a contact stress field to be a Hertzian pressure profile by using well-known classical solutions associated with Hertzian contact. Persson first developed the conformal contact analysis method around half a century ago, but there have been no significant improvements since then. The present research also adopted this method, but developed new solutions from the viewpoint of application to structural design. The analysis began with a comparison between Persson°Øs conformal contact stress and the Hertzian stress fields. The next step was to check the differences in the normalized stress values of both. This study used the tolerance for the difference in the peak stresses of Persson°Øs solution and the Hertz solution to validate the Hertzian assumption. This gave the range for the difference in radii of the pin and hole when the contact force and mechanical properties of the material are specified. The results showed that, at a tolerance of 5%, the Hertzian assumption is valid if half of the contact angle is less than 35°ý. In addition, the Hertzian assumption holds even for a relatively long contact length, in contrast to the general incomplete contact problem. This paper discusses these results along with other aspects of the application to the design.
The general characteristics of the elder gait are to show a tendency that stride length and cycle decrease compared with those of adult, then walk velocity decreases. Despite differences by age in design of elder footwear, the study on characteristics of elderly gait is few. This study aims to compare pressure distributions of elderly foot with those of young students by using EMED. The ground contact time on foot was longer than that of university students in Result. Elderly males and females have 1.12 times and 1.20 times greater maximum force over the whole areas on the foot during walking than that of younger males and females, respectively. The elderly have long ground contact time at the middle foot. The guidelines which should be considered in designing shoes for the elderly are proposed. The results can be applied to design of the elder footwear on the basis of ergonomics.
In the present study, measurements of thermal contact resistance (TCR) were conducted for joints of brass and aluminium cylinders of 30 mm in diameter, 45 mm in length, when their interfaces were; ⅰ) under vacuum, ⅱ) charged with a pure silicone grease and ⅲ) charged with a mixture of silicone grease and powder of aluminium (#325). Also the data were compared with analytical calculations using Fouche's model. The data of TCR for joints under vacuum state varied in the range of (2∼100)${\times}$10$\^$-5/(㎡$^{\circ}C$/W) depending on their surface roughness. When the contact surfaces were carefully ground, a reduction of 30∼50% in TCR was obtained. But the surface treatment with silicone grease gave rise to a reduction of about 5∼10 times more than that of vacuum state. The analytical prediction by Fouche's model showed a good agreement within 10~30%, for the case of contact surface charged with silicone grease.

A theoretical study of spray and combustion characteristics due to coaxial twin-fluid injection is conducted to investigate the effects of liquid jet property, droplet size, contact length and liquid jet velocity. Model is properly validated with measurements and shows good agreement. Prediction of jet contact length, droplet size, liquid jet velocity reflects genuine features of coaxial injection in physical and practical aspects. Both the jet contact length and tile droplet size are reduced in a linear manner with an increase of injector diameter. Cross sectional area of liquid intact core is reduced with augmented jet splitting rate, thus the jet is accelerated to maintain the mass continuity and with an assistant of momentum diffusion by burnt gas.
