  • Mechanical joint and adhesive joint are two typical joining methods for structures. The adhesive joints distribute the load over a larger area than mechanical joints and have excellent fatigue properties. However, the strength of adhesive joint greatly depends on the environmental conditions and the skill of the operator. Therefore, there is a need for techniques to evaluate the quality of the adhesive joints. The electric resistance method is a very promising technique for detecting defects by measuring the electrical resistance of an adhesive joint in which CNTs are dispersed in an adhesive. In this study, Aluminium-Aluminium adhesive single lap joint specimens were fabricated by using the adhesive dispersing CNTs using a sonicator and a 3-roll mill, and the static strengths and defect detection capabilities of the joints using the electrical resistance method were evaluated according to the CNTs content.

  • This study was conducted to see the effect of TiN ion-plating on the bond strength of orthodontic bracket. Three stainless-steel brackets with different base types were chosen; when TiN ion-plated brackets and non iorrplated brackets were bonded to the teeth, initial and long-term bond strength were measured, The observations oi bonding surface and failure sites through the scanning electron microscope were analysed and compared. The summary of this study was as follows; ${\cdot}$ When TiN ion-plating was not applied, the Micro-Loc type was the highest in bond strength atter 24 hours as $5.89{\pm}1.77$ MPa, followed by $4,27{\pm}1.12MPa$ for Foil Mesh type and $2.64{\pm}0.58MPa$ for Undercut type(P<0.05). ${\cdot}$ Under TiN ion-plating, the bond strength after 24 hours showed: Micro-Loc type $-6.26{\pm}1.51MPa$, Foil Mesh type $-7.45{\pm}2.01MPa$, Undercut type $-2.93{\pm}0.84MPa$. Unlike in the case of non ion-plating, Foil Mesh type showed a higher strength than Micro-Loc type, with Undercut type still showing the lowest bond strength(P<0.05). The bond strength, after 24 hours, increased in case of ion-plated in all 3 types, but a significant increase was shown only in Foil Mesh type(P<0.001). ${\cdot}$ Under a long-term immersion, regardless of ion or non ion-plating, bond strength in general increased over the initial bond strength(one day), with more stability. ${\cdot}$ Through scanning electron microscopic observation of bonding surface, it was found that, regardless of the bracket base type or the application of ion-plating, the resin was thoroughly spreaded into bracket base to form a solid bonding surface between the bracket and the tooth. This was also true in case of a long-term immersion. ${\cdot}$ The scanning electron microscopic observation of failure sites revealed diverse failure patterns.

  • Adhesion strength of polyurethane adhesive for laminated metal plate was investigated. Also, the effect of laminating conditions on the adhesion strength was understood by measuring peel strength as a function of adhesion temperature and time. The amount of isocyanate appearing due to the unblocking of oxime in polyurethane adhesive affected the strength of adhesion with hydroxyl on the metal plate or aluminum foil and it was controlled by adhesion temperature and time. However, the excess of temperature and time in laminating process caused the lowering of adhesion strength because of the decrease of solvent content as well as thermal degradation of the adhesive.

  • Intuitively, higher bond strengths should result in less leakage. However, the relationship between bond strengths and microleakage value is complex and not clearly understood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between tensile bond strengths and microleakage values in the same restorations to understand the behavior of resin bonding to tooth structure. One-hundred and twenty enamel or dentin specimens from freshly extracted bovine mandibular incisors were used. The specimen was treated with 32% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds and rinsed for 20 seconds. the teeth were divided into four groups by means of wet bonding technique or dry bonding. One-Step$^{TM}$ adhesive were applied to the specimen. The specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 7 days, and tensile bond strength and microleakage were measured. The results were as follows: 1. Significant negative correlation was found between bond strengths and micro leakage values. Hence, higher bond strengths seem to be associated with lower microleakage, and vice versa (r=-0 50, p<0.05). 2. The Enamel/Wet group showed significantly higher bond strength than Enamel/Dry one, and Dentin/Wet group showed higher strength than Dentin/Dry one (p<0.05). 3. Microleakage was significantly less ill wet bonding than in dry one at dentin (p<0.05), however, there was no significant difference between wet and dry bonding at enamel (p>0.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of 4 self etching primers by measuring the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and examining the failure pattern of bracket-tooth interfaces. Methods: Seventy-five, defect-free, premolars were randomly assigned into five groups: control group (37% phosphoric acid + Transbond XT primer) and self etching primer treated groups (Transbond Plus self etching primer, Unifil bond, Clearfil SE bond, and Adhese). The shear bond strength was measured with a universal testing machine and the amount of residual adhesive remaining on the brackets after debonding was assessed by the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Results: The results showed that the groups conditioned with self etching primer had significantly lower shear bond strength than the control group (p < 0.05), although clinically acceptable. However, there were no significant differences in shear bond strength among the self etching primer groups (p > 0.05). Evaluation of the ARI scores indicated there was less resin remnant on the teeth in the groups conditioned with self etching primers, although not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that all four of the self etching primers have shown acceptable bond strength for clinical use.

  • Adherend samples were made from unsaturated polyester and woven and mat glass fibers by the hand layup and vacuum methods. The mechanical properties of the adhesive, composite adherends, and terminal-joint and secondary-joint specimens were determined experimentally. Combinations of the experiment results and the bonding theory were used in this study. The maximum and average shear stresses were calculated based on the maximum tensile force and geometry parameters of the joint specimens. The results of the maximum and average shear stresses were compared and evaluated for six joints. The results showed that the grinding and grind/acetone joint had the highest strength among three types of terminal-joints. Similarly, the mat-mat and mat-woven joints had the highest strength among three types of secondary-joints with the same value. Conversely, no treatment and woven-woven bonding had very low strength. In each case, failure occurred always at two ends and then moved toward the middle area of the overlap length.

  • Purpose: The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of a resin coating on the shear bond strength of indirect composite restoration bonded to dentin with a self adhesive resin cement and to compare the shear bond strength with that of a conventional resin cement. Materials and methods: The occlusal enamels of thirty six extracted noncarious human molars were removed until the dentin flat surfaces of the teeth were exposed. Then, they were divided into 3 groups. The dentin surfaces of group 1 and 3 were left without any conditioning, while the dentin surfaces of group 2 were resin-coated with Clearfil SE bond and a flowable resin composite, Metafil Flo. After all specimens were temporized for 24 hours, indirect composite resin blocks fabricated by Tescera were bonded to dentins by Unicem for group 1 and 2, and by Panavia F for group 3. After 48 hours of water storage, shear bond strengths were measured. The data was analyzed with one-way analysis of variance and multiple comparison test (Tukey method). Results: The shear bond strengths of Unicem applied to resin coated dentin surfaces were significantly higher than those of Unicem and Panavia F used to uncoated dentin surfaces (P<.0001). Conclusion: Application of a resin coating to the dentin surface significantly improved the shear bonding strength of a self adhesive resin cement in indirect restoration.

  • Long Fiber Prepreg Sheet (LFPS) has the advantages of excellent production efficiency and formability for complex shapes compared to conventional continuous fiber reinforced composites. When fibrous composites are used with different materials, joining method is important because strength of the joining part determines the strength of the hybrid structure. In this study, the adhesive joint strengths of co-cured LFPS and aluminum were evaluated under various surface treatment conditions and environmental conditions (temperature and moisture conditions). Mechanical abrasion and plasma exposure were used for the surface treatment. The adhesive joints experienced various surface treatments were tested by using single lap joint specimens. Adhesive strengths under various conditions were compared and the most appropriate condition was determined.
