  • We evaluated the stress-reduction effect for different shapes of a composite adherend with or without a spew fillet. Six different single-lap joint specimens were modeled and assessed using nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, we investigated the effect of the stiffness ratio of the adherend and adhesive. The single-lap joint with normal tapering had the highest stress values, and the single-lap joint with reverse tapering and a spew fillet had the lowest stress values. The composite adherends with higher stiffness had lower stress values, and the adhesives with lower stiffness had lower stress values.

  • In this study, the stress reduction effect was evaluated for GFRP/Mg single lap bonded joints according to six different adherend shapes. Six different types of the single lap joint specimen were modeled and assessed using geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, three dimensional effect of stress distribution for the different adherend shapes was investigated. From the analysis, the dissimilar single lap bonded joint with the normal tapering and without the spew fillet (model 2) showed the highest stress values. In contrast, the peel stress values of both the square ended adherends with the spew fillet (model 3) and the reverse tapered adherends with the spew fillet (model 5) were 65.8% and 65.5% lower than the reference model.

  • As the need for R&D for high reliability cameras, such as satellite cameras, increases, the reliability of the bonding strength properties between an opto-mechanical structure and an optical component has been secured through specimen tests. However, the widely used specimen shape is not suitable for the application of glass and glass-ceramic material, which is fragile, making it difficult to obtain accurate bonding properties due to stress concentration in glass parts before reaching the bonding strength limit. In this study, the stress distribution characteristics in the shear test condition for various specimen shapes were studied analytically, based on the test results of the glass material's own fracture. Through this, the shape characteristics capable of relieving the stress concentration of the glass part were derived, and the range of the bonding shear strength verifiable by the specimen test was improved.

  • Adhesive-bonded joints are widely used in the industry. Recently, applications of adhesive bonding joints have been increased extensively in automobile and aircraft industry. The strength of adhesive joints is influenced by the surface roughness, adhesive shape, stress distribution, and etc. However, the magnitude of the influence has not yet been clarified because of the complexity of the phenomena. In this study, as the fundamental research of adhesive bonding joints, the effects of adhesive shape and loading speed on bonding strength properties and durability of aluminum to polycarbonate single-lap joints were studied. To evaluate the effect of adhesive shape, several modified shapes were used, and loading speeds were varied from 0.05 to 5 mm/min. As a result, the load-displacement distribution was shown a brittle fracture tendency. The trigonal edged single lap and bevelled lap joints showed the higher strength than the plain single lap, trigonal single lap, joggle lap and double lap joints in same adhesive area. The fractures of trigonal single lap and trigonal edged single lap joints that had the higher strength level were shown as the mixture type of the cohesive and interfacial-failure, mostly joggle lap joints that had the lower strength level were shown as the adhesive-failure.

  • Gecko adhesion system consists of beam-shaped seta and spatula which has the role of adhesive pad. In this paper, adhesion mechanism of gecko adhesion system is performed by using adhesive beam contact model. this model has a feature of non-uniform stress profile on the contact surface and adhesion/detachment mechanism is determined by the tensile stress of the contact region. a spatula tip pad has the role of reduction of maximum tensile stress and adhesive force is increased due to this effect. As for a reverse loading case, maximum compressive stress drops by the spatula effect and this cause unsymmetric loading conditions between adhesion and detachment forces. In this study, finite element method is used for the analysis of adhesive beam contact model and the results for spatula effect are presented.

  • In this study, the micro- and nano-particles were used and their shapes were transferred into the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film to fabricate the dry adhesives and their properties were investigated. The Cu nanoparticles of the sizes of 20 nm, 40 nm and 70 nm and the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads of the size of $5{\mu}m$ were used to transfer their images and the resultant properties of the dry adhesives were compared. The effects of particle size and materials on the mechanical property, tensile adhesion strength, light transmittance, surface morphology, water contact angle were studied. The dry adhesives obtained from the transfer process of Cu nanoparticles with the size of 20 nm resulted in the enhancement of tensile adhesion strength more than 300% compared to that of the bare PDMS. The formation of nanostructure of large surface area on the surface of the PDMS film by the Cu nanoparticles may responsible for the improvement. This study suggests that the use of nanoparticles during the fabrication of PDMS dry adhesives is easy and effective and could be applied to the fabrication of the medical patch.

  • In this study, the strength of magnesium-GFRP/epoxy single-lap bonded joints are experimentally evaluated with different end shapes. In order to achieve this, four different single-lap joints with different end shapes are fabricated and the failure load is measured under tensile loading tests. From the test results, the single-lap joint with a square end exhibits the lowest failure load while the single-lap joint with reverse tapering and a spew fillet has the highest stress values. It has 11.1% higher failure strength than the single-lap joint with a square end.
