  • In this paper, the behaviour of composite steel-CFRP members is studied experimentally and using FE-analysis. The use of advance composite materials in construction for repair and rehabilitation has become a frequent used method in the last decade. FRP composites have many advantages over the traditional technique of steel bonding for a number of reasons: 1. Composites add little or no additional weight to a building, eliminating the need for costly foundation strengthening. 2. FRP composites are very thin (1.2mm to 1.4mm). So there is no loss of floor space and negligible effect over the architectural aspect. 3. FRP composites do not corrode, this makes it long lasting. However, the method is yet to become a mainstream application due to a number of economical and design related issues. Brittle debonding failure, aging effect on bonding, broad based awareness and proper design guidelines are the main concern for future research works. This paper is focused on the ultimate load carrying capacity of the CFRP-strengthened beams and their effect on the deflection and failures modes by varying the amount of CFRP content.

  • A methodology is presented for the failure prediction of composite single-lap bonded joints considering both of composite adherend failure and bondline failure. An elastic-perfectly plastic model of adhesive and a delamination failure criterion are used in the methodology. The failure predictions have been performed using finite element method and the proposed methodology. The failure prediction results such as failure mode and strength have very good agreements with the test results of joint specimens with various bonding methods and parameters. The influence of variations in the effective strength (that is, adhesion performance) and plastic behavior of adhesive on the failure characteristics of composite bonded Joints are investigated numerically. The numerical results show that optimal joint strength is archived when adhesive and delamination failure occur in the same time.

  • The existing concrete beams can be retrofitted or reinforced by attaching carbon fiber or glass fiber sheet beneath the beams. Although diverse design methods and application techniques of the retrofitting are studied and developed, the testing method of examining retrofitted beams have not been put into practice yet. In this study, a bond delamination has been modeled and studied to provide a basis for the development of actual testing equipments. For this purpose, Gaussian and sinusoidal waves with 3GHz and 5GHz center frequency are used as an incident wave and 1mm and 3mm bond delamination under the reinforcement are modeled. In the modeling, Finite Difference-Time Domain algorithm is used to investigate the behavior of electromagnetic waves in concrete. The results have shown that 5GHz waves are suitable for the detection of delamination.

  • This paper presents a novel geometric modeling technique to predict the mechanical properties of an aircraft wing's skin-stringer integrated panel. Due to mechanical and adhesive fastening, this panel is vulnerable to stress concentration and debonding, so we designed it to integrate the skin and stringer using three-dimensional woven composites. Geometric modeling was conducted by measuring the geometric parameters of the specimen and defining the pattern of the yarns as functions. We used a weighted average model with iso-strain and iso-stress assumptions to predict the mechanical properties of the panel parts. We then compared the results of a finite element analysis with a compression test to verify the accuracy of our model. Our proposed technique proved to be more efficient than the traditional experimental method for predicting the mechanical properties of skin-stringer integrated panels.

  • Aging and severe environments are major causes of damage in reinforced concrete (RC) structures such as buildings and bridges. Deterioration such as concrete cracks, corrosion of steel, and deformation of structural members can significantly degrade the structural performance and safety. Therefore, effective and easy-to-use methods are desired for repairing and strengthening such concrete structures. Various methods for strengthening and rehabilitation of RC structures have been developed in the past several decades. Recently, FRP composite materials have emerged as a cost-effective alternative to the conventional materials for repairing, strengthening, and retrofitting deteriorating/deficient concrete structures, by externally bonding FRP laminates to concrete structural members. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in predicting behavior of circular type concrete column retrofitted with FRP. To construct training and testing dataset, experiment results for the specimens which have different retrofit profile are used. Retrofit ratio, strength of existing concrete, thickness, number of layer, stiffness, ultimate strength of fiber and size of specimens are selected as input parameters to predict strength, strain, and stiffness of post-yielding modulus. These proposed ANFIS models show reliable increased accuracy in predicting constitutive properties of concrete retrofitted by FRP, compared to the constitutive models suggested by other researchers.

  • Most connections for the glulam structural members consisted of connector and fastener. The mechanical behaviour of the connection can be occurred by the dowel bearing resistance and wood shear by the fastener. This study aims at the examination of the shear properties for the small specimen with lamination components and for the full-sized pin connection and the moment resisting property for the double shear full-sized pin connection using structural column and beam members. Small specimens including glue line shows greater density and shear strength by the lamination effect than other specimens. It is needed that estimations of double shear property and moment resistance for the pin connections should be adjusted in some degree. For the better and safe estimation of moment resistance strength for the column-beam pin connection, however, the shear strength of small specimens should be deducted by 10%.

  • It is required to accumulate experimental datum that make the theories easy to general technicians in order to use composite material widely on construction field. Therefore, we intend to present base technologies that evaluate static and fatigue performance according to the FRP deck section and offer the basis datum for FRP deck analyses and the design standards. As results of static tests, it can be shown that specimen with fabric direction has higher rigidity than that with normal to fabric direction and convergence for the datum. Due to this reason, it has more stable behavior by structural characteristics of matrix arrangement during destruction. For the fatigue tests, we found that by increasing the number of test repetition, test specimen with fabric direction had an crack just before the destruction, and the contact surface was detached.

  • Instead of metal connector generally used on the structural glued laminated timber rahmen joints, the GFRP reinforced laminated plates combining veneer and GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and bonded type GFRP rod were used as the connectors. As a result of moment resistance performance evaluation on the joint part applied with these connectors, the yield moment of specimen using the GFRP reinforced laminated plates and GFRP rod pin was measured 4 % lower in comparison to the specimen (Type-1) using the metal connectors, but the initial rotational stiffness was measured 29% higher. Also, the yield moment and rotational stiffness of the specimen using the GFRP-reinforced laminated plates and wood (Eucalyptus marginata) pin showed were measured 11% and 56% higher in comparison to the Type-1 specimen, showing the best performance. It was also confirmed through the failure shape and perfect elasto-plasticity analysis that it showed ductility behavior, not brittle fracture, from the shear resisting force by the pin and the bonding strength increased and the unification of member was carried out. On the other hand, in case of the specimen bonded with GFRP rod, it was impossible to measure the bonding performance or it was measured very low due to poor bonding.

  • This study is to develop a mulit-layer glued columns for construction of Korean-style houses by using domestic small diameter logs. Dried small square lumber glued each other to develop a multi-layer glued columns and evaluated its performance of strength. Then, predicted the design load of multi-layer glued columns and make a comparison between actual load and design load of multi-layer glued columns. In the results, allowable load by allowable stress of multi-layer glued columns was measured one-third of actual columns load and prediction load was measured less than 10~30% of the actual load. Therefore, muilt-layer glued member has a standard allowable stress of compressive of 13 MPa (Larix leptolepis) and 19 MPa (Chamaecyparis obtusa) when used as columns. Also, using compression strength of small diameter square logs could calculate maximum loads of multi-layer glued member as column.
