  • In this paper, firstly we have derived and presented the specific heat jump as a function of the critical temperature. Secondly, we have analyzed the sign and magnitude of the derived specific heat jump and predicted the expected experimental results. And lastly, we have compared the expected experimental results with the real experimental results. Theoretically derived specific heat jump is considerably compatible with the specific heat jump up and down phenomena of the $YNi_2B_2C$ crystal. Especially, the remarkable theoretical prediction-hat the specific heat would jump down during the normal state-to-superconducting state transition at extremely low temperatures-have been confirmed by the experimental results.

  • We consider a correlated discrete-time random walk in which the current jump size depends on the previous jump size and a noncorrelated discrete-time random walk where the jump size is determined independently. By using the strong law of large numbers of Markov chains we derive the formula for the asymptotic means of the random mixture and the periodic pattern of these two random walks and then we show that there exists Parrondo's paradox where each random walk has mean 0 but their random mixture and periodic pattern have negative or positive means. We describe the parameter sets at which Parrondo's paradox holds in each case.

  • We report a direct observation of Barkhausen avalanches in 50-nm Fe film, using a magneto-optical microscope magnetometer, capable of time-resolved domain observation. The time-resolved domain-evolution patterns exhibit that the occurrence of Barkhausen jump is random with respect to interval, size, and location. From the repetitive measurements more than 1000 times, we found that the probability distribution of Barkhausen jump size follows a power-law distribution and the critical exponent reveals the value of 1.14 $\pm$ 0.03.

  • One of the undesirable nonlinear phenomena in feedback control systems is called 'wind up', which is characterized by large overshoot, slow response, and even instability. It is caused by interaction between the integrator in the controller and the saturating actuator. Limit cycle and jump resonance are another nonlinear characteristrics of systems with saturating actuators. Several 'anti-windup' compensators have been developed to prevent some of the aforementioned nonlinear characteristics such as instability and limit cycle, but none has studied the effect of anti-windup compensator on the jump resonance. In this paper, we developed an analytical method to design the compensator to prevent not only limit cycle but also jump resonance. An illustrative example is included to show the compensator eliminates jump resonance effectively.

  • This paper tries to investigate the relationships among stock return volatility, time-varying risk premium and Korea Discount. Using Korean Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) return from January 4, 1980 to August 31, 2005, this study finds possible links between time-varying risk premium and Korea Discount. First of all, this study classifies Korean stock returns during the sample period by three regime-switching volatility period that is to say, low-volatile period medium-volatile period and highly-volatile period by estimating Markov-Switching ARCH model. During the highly volatile period of Korean stock return (09/01/1997-05/31/2001), the estimated time-varying unit risk premium from the jump-diffusion GARCH model was 0.3625, where as during the low volatile period (01/04/1980-l1/30/1985), the time-varying unit risk premium was estimated 0.0284 from the jump diffusion GARCH model, which was about thirteen times less than that. This study seems to find the evidence that highly volatile Korean stock market may induce large time-varying risk premium from the investors and this may lead to Korea discount.

  • We have investigated the magnetization reversal behavior in ferromagnetic $Co_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}$ alloy films using the magneto-optical Kerr microscope capable of the direct observation of time-resolved domain patterns. Interestingly enough, as the sample thickness increases the magnetization reversal behavior becomes changed from a single domain wall motion to the random nucleations of domains. Also, from the stochastic analysis of the domain jump sizes during the domain wall motion, it was found that the magnetization reversal behavior in the samples shows the critical scaling behavior with the critical exponent of ${\tau}{\sim}1.33$.

  • The main objectives of this study are to examine the random response of a vibration absorber system with autoparametric coupling in the neighborhood of internal resonance by Gaussian closure and to compare the results with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. The numerical simulation is found to support the main features of the nonlinear modal interaction in the neighborhood of internal resonance conditions. While the Gaussian closure exhibits regions of multiple solutions in the neighborhood of internal resonance, the numerical simulation gives only one solution depending on the assigned initial conditions. The on-off intermittency phenomena of the cantilever mode is observed in the Monte Carlo simulation over a small range of parameter.

  • A numerical analysis is carried out for the nonlinear phenomena of the bubble oscillator. The model is based on the Keller's formulation for the bubble dynamics. Interpretation of the bubble interior is based on the formulation by Prosperetti. His formulation adopts the energy equation for the analysis of the bubble interior. The numerical simulation Shows typical nonlinear phenomena in its frequency response. Among such nonlinear aspects are the jump phenomenon, the shift of natural frequency of the system, and the appearance of superharmonic resonances. It is deduced that the nonlinear frequency response is dependent upon the initial condition of the bubble oscillator and some multi-valued frequency region can appear in the response curve. Nonlinear phenomena appeared in the bubble oscillator is compared with those of the Duffing equation and it may be said that the bubble dynamic equation has similar nonlinear aspects to the Duffing equation.

  • In the present study, to investigate flows around space launch vehicles at mid-high altitudes efficiently, a three-dimensional unstructured mesh Navier-Stokes solver employing a Maxwell slip boundary condition was developed. Validation of the present flow solver was made for a blunted cone-tip configuration by comparing the results with those of the DSMC simulation and experiment. It was found that the present flow solver works well by capturing the velocity slip and the temperature jump on the solid surface more efficiently than the DSMC simulation. Flow simulations of space launch vehicles were conducted by using the flow solver. Mach number of 6 at the mid-high altitude around 86km was considered, and the flow phenomena at the mid-high altitude was discussed.

  • The bubble model by Keller and Prosperetti is adapted to solve the nonlinear oscillation of a gas bubble. This formulation leads to accurate results since it introduces the energy equation instead of the polytropic assumption for the bubble interior. The numerical method used in this study is stable enough to handle large amplitude of bubble oscillation. The numerical results show some interesting nonlinear phenomena fur the bubble oscillator. The excitation changes the natural frequency of the bubble and makes some harmonic resonances at $f/f_0=1/2, 1/3$ and so on. The natural frequency of a bubble oscillator decreases compared with the linear case result, which means that the nonlinear bubble oscillation system is a "softening"system. In addition, the frequency response curve jumps up or down at a certain frequency. It is also found that there exist multi-valued regions in the frequency response curve depending on the initial conditions of bubble. The dependency of the bubble motion on the initial condition can generate extremely large pressure and temperature which might be the cause of the acoustic cavitation and the sonoluminescence.inescence.
