  • A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Eye Ball' was developed from a cross between 'Rima' and 'Yen' followed by selections of seedlings and lines at the Flower Rearch Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 2002 to 2006. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2004 to 2006 under forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Eye Ball' was October 20th, but year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.1cm in diameter, and had 38.4 petals and 26.8 flowers per stem in autumn. Its petal was narrow (0.4 cm) and pink with green in color at the flower center. To flower in the short day condition, for 'Eye Ball' was about 47 days in spring, and 'Eye Ball' showed a vase life of 20.9 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for a commercialization in 2007. 'Eye Ball' would be cultured under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.

  • To investigate the characteristics of plant growth and flower quality of gerbera 'Sunny Lemon' by amount of nutrient solution, young seedling plants, 'Sunny Lemon' were transplanted to rock-wool and medium of peat moss and perlite mixed with 1 to 2 and they were acclimatized in greenhouse during about 1 month. Nutrient solution supplied to the plants is sonneveld solution of 1/2 concentration and treatments launched June 24, 2010 when average plant height was $20{\pm}1cm$. Nutrient contents as a standard for starting point of irrigation by time domain reflectometry (TDR) were determined with 60-65%, 70-75%, and 80-85%. Results of growth during vegetative growth, plant height, leaf width and leaf number increased by 10% in rockwool, but they were not significantly different. As for plant growth depending on nutrient content, 80-85% treatment showed the highest values. Leaf number increased by 60%, and leaf width and plant height had a about 40% increase than initial growth. Effectiveness for flower quality, yield and days to flowering were superior when nutrient content of media was higher than in the others. Especially, average days to flowering in 80-85% content was advanced by 7-10 days compared to the day in 60-65% treatment. The total amount of nutrient supply per plant was higher in mixed medium than in rockwool, but change patterns of EC and pH were enhanced in rockwool. Based on our results, we recommended that growth, cut flower, and yield of gerbera 'Sunny Lemon' were more effective when nutrient content of mixed medium was maintained at 80-85%.

  • Packaging of export cut lilies reduces physical damage during distribution like dropping, shock, vibration, compression and serves to protect from necrosis, microbial contamination and decomposition. Study on which packaging materials must be selected is necessary because it serves to direct effect maintaining quality and the degree of freshness. newspaper, perforated OPP film, Oriented Nylon film (ON), punched OPP film, OPP films are used in this study. Plant senescence of lilies was happened rapidly during storage at $25^{\circ}C$ rather than at $5^{\circ}C$. Also, water absorption, fresh weight at during storage $25^{\circ}C$ rather than at $5^{\circ}C$ In addition, fresh weight of lilies storage at $25^{\circ}C$ appears higher than at $5^{\circ}C$ all of the packaging materials except OPP because water absorption of lily storage at $5^{\circ}C$ appears higher than at $25^{\circ}C$, thereby suppressing the fresh weight reducing Also, effect on biological activity of lilies from shape of packaging material appears higher during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$. Compared with each packaging materials, newspaper packaging is the smallest effect on changes in biological activity of cut lilies during storage. Thus, the results demonstrate that flowering date are affected mainly by the storage temperature rather than packaging materials.

  • In order to seek more eco-friend, economic and safer quarantine method than current methyl bromide fumigation, the convergent treatment with 200 Gy of gamma irradiation and several chemicals such as nano-siver particles (NSS), sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) was tried on the cuttings of lily in the packing of catonnage box for export. With 6 independent experiments of gamma irradiation on the three lily cultivars, cvs. Siberia, Le reve and Sorbonne, incidence and severity of lily leaf blight was investigated on leaves and petals at 8-d after infection. 200 Gy of gamma irradiation decreased at 13-25% of severity on the leaf of Sorbonne, but it increased at 2-5% of severity on the leaf of Siberia and Le reve. Chemical substitutes such as NSS and NaDCC were not effective to control of lily blight on cuttings. By 200 Gy of gamma irradiation treatment, chlorophyll contents were statistically significantly decreased at 12-d after irradiation and the longevities vaselife of fully open flower of Siberia and Sorbonne were increased at 0.4 to 1.2 days. In addition, the relative fresh weights of the gamma irradiated cuttings were severely dried compared to the non-irradiated control. On the other hands, the symptoms of phyto-toxicity of high dose gamma irradiation at 1 or 2 kGy on cv. Siberia were to be blight at the tip of bloom, bent necks of flower, and delayed the process of flowering.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum hydroponic system and nutrient solution for promoting the growth and flowering of hydroponically grown carnation. DFT (deep flow technique) and NFT (nutrient film technique) systems were employed and four kinds of nutrient solution, which are Cooper solution, Yamasaki solution, balanced nutrient solution by Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station and PTG solution in the Netherlands were used and compared. pH was lowest in the PTG solution compared to the other nutrient solutions used. Plant height was highest in the DFT system in the plot of PTG solution as of 53.0 cm at 88 days after transplanting, while lowest in NFT system with Cooper solution. Stem diameter was more thickened in NFT system with PTG solution as of 7.2 mm at 88 days after transplanting. Days to flowering was shortened to 122.3 days in NFT system when PTG solution was used. This results suggested a combination of NFT system with PTG solution as optimum hydroponic system and nutrient solution for cut carnation production. Further trials as to the management of nutrient solution by glowing stages should be followed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of magnesium concentrations in fertilizer solution on growth and cut flower quality of chrysanthemum 'Biarritz'. The nutrient concentrations in plant tissue and soil solution of root media were also determined. Magnesium deficiency appeared on older leaves with interveinal yellow-green chlorosis. Marginal chlorosis and necrosis also developed on some of older leaves. Elevation of Mg concentration in fertilizer solution increased cut flower weight at harvesting stage resulting in the 8.84g in 1.5mM treatment. Dry weight of whole above ground plant tissue increased as Mg concentrations in fertilizer solution were elevated within the range from 0 to 15mM, but that of 20mM decreased compared to 15mM treatment. The dry weight of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5mM treatments were 8.42, 8.75 and 8.848 and tissue Mg contents of those based on the youngest fully expanded leaves at harvesting stage were 0.34, 0.53 and $0.71\%$, respectively. Based on dry weight and tissue Mg contents, Mg fertilization to maintain tissue contents higher than $0.64\%$ is necessary to ensure flower quality and yield. By considering the concentration in 15mM treatment, Mg concentration in soil solution of root media should be higher than $3.68mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at harvesting stage.

  • Objective of this Research was to determine the influence of foliar application of $CaCl_2$ or $K_2SI_2O_5$ and soil application of $CaCO_3$ or $SiO_2$ on growth and cut flower quality of Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Wedding March'. To achieve this, $CaCl_2$ or $K_2SI_2O_5$ were applied at six leaf stage with the concentration of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2% and $CaCO_3$ or $SiO_2$ were applied as basal fertilization with the amount of 100, 200, 400kg per 10a or 50, 100, 200, 400kg per 10a respectively. Plant material was used Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Wedding March'. Among calcium chloride($CaCl_2$) and calcium carbonate($CaCO_3$), calcium chloride foliar application was more effective than calcium carbonate with basal fertilization to growth of common calla 'Wedding March'. In the 0.1% solution foliar application of calcium chloride, plant height, leaf length and length of cut-flower was more longer than control. Length of leaf petiole was more longer and leaf fresh weight was more heavier than control. The degree of petiole hardness was more effective in the 0.1% solution calcium chloride foliar application than any other treatment. In the silicate fertilization treatment, plant height of 50kg per 10a treatment was most highest as 73.9cm. also its length of leaf petiole and leaf fresh weight was more effective than any other treatment. The hardness of petiole was better in the 50kg per 10a silicate fertilizer treatment. The cell shape of leaf petiole was round and tissue was regular in the treatment of 0.1% calcium chloride and 50kg per 10a silicate fertilizer but the cell of control was irregular round type. Macro element content of calcium was more amount in the treatment of silicate 50kg per 10a basal fertilization. The infected ratio of Erwinia was no relation with lime and silicate fertilizer treatment. Lime fertilizer treatment is effective for growth and flowering of Calla than silicate fertilizer and the suitable concentration was 0.1%.

  • A rose factory type is a system that enables year-round, planned and mass production of high quality cut-rose. Conversion of a conventional system to a rose factory is essential to increase cut-rose export. Controlling root Bone in culled rose production factory is very important for economic and efficient production of rose. This study was conducted to determine optimum root zone temperature of nutrient solution in single-stemmed rose production system. The optimum temperature of the nutrient solution for growth, photosynthetic and transpiration rates for 'Red Velvet' was $15\~20^{\circ}C$. Whereas the optimum temperature for 'Vital' was $10\~15^{\circ}C$. However, growth was almost sloped at $30^{\circ}C$, resulting in concluding the adaptation of 'Vital' to high temperature was poor as compared with 'Red Velvet'.

  • The greatest and major cost for cut rose production during winter seasons in Korea is cost of heating the greenhouse. A study was conducted on a cost-efficient heating system to reduce expenses of cut rose growers in times of high energy prices. An infrared heating system utilizing radiant energy has an obvious advantage over other heating methods in that the energy is first used to raise temperatures of plants and other objects and subsequently that of the atmosphere, resulting in faster reaching to desired plant temperatures at a reduced heating cost. In this study the heating effect and heating cost saving of a nano-carbon fiber infrared heating system (NCFIHS) installed in cut rose greenhouses in Gimhae, Gyeongnam Province were analyzed comparatively. In addition growth, quality, and vase life of 'Orange Fresh' roses grown in greenhouses heated by NCFIHS against those grown in greenhouses heated by so called an electrical heating system. In greenhouses with a NCFlHS with a set point air temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, plant temperature was maintained at $1{\sim}2^{\circ}C$ higher than the air temperature, and temperatures of growing bed surface and root zone were maintained at $17{\sim}19^{\circ}C$ throughout cold winter nights. The cost for heating in NCFIHS was about 25 and 51% of that of an electrical heating system and a hot water heating system heated by petroleum, respectively. Growth of roses harvested in greenhouses with a NCFIHS was similar to those grown in greenhouses with an electrical heating system. However, cut roses with more intense petal and leaf colors and a longer vase life (fresh weight and amount of water uptake) were harvested in greenhouses with a NCFIHS as compared to those harvested in greenhouses with an electrical heating system.
