  • Organic materials reveal the remarkable absorption and high buffer capacity for nutrient. Hence, organic materials need some different nutrient management skill from inorganic one. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of EC level of nutrient solution on the yield and quality of cut rose grown in the mixed substrate of coir and perlite. 3 EC levels of nutrient solution was treated, which were 0.7, 1.0, 1.3 times of standard solution (Aichiken solution, Japan) for cut rose hydroponics. EC of the standard solution was changed by season following as 1.4 (Apr.~June), 1.0 (July~Aug.), 1.4 (Sep.~Oct.), and $1.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ (Nov.~Mar.) subsequently. The supply of nutrient solution was controlled by the signal of water potential at -5kPa using frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) sensor. As the results, marketable yield was similar for all treatments until 3rd harvest, but was decreased in high EC level from 4th harvest to 7th harvest as final. 0.7 times of standard solution decreased the ratio of unmarketable rose having short stem below 70cm and increased the ratio of high quality rose having long stem above 91cm. The flower weight and stem diameter of cut rose was higher in the low EC treatment than the others.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of pretreatment and shipping temperature on leaf chlorosis in cut Lilium Oriental hybrid 'Siberia'. Cut lilies were shipped under various temperatures (5, 10, 15, $25^{\circ}C$) for 5 days. When cut lilies were shipped at $25^{\circ}C$, leaf chlorosis was accelerated. However, chlorosis was significantly decreased by shipping at 5 to $15^{\circ}C$. In addition, leaf chlorosis was significantly decreased when the cut lilies were pretreated with a solution containing Promalin (BA + $GA_{4+7}$) as compared to the control. Promalin completely prevented postharvest leaf chlorosis, whereas $GA_3$ and Chrysal SVB were ineffective. Leaf chlorosis decreased more with Promalin dip treatment than with spray treatment. This pretreatment solution also extended the vase life of cut lilies. When cut lilies were pretreated with Promalin, yield (Fv/Fm) of chlorophyll fluorescence was highly maintained. Especially chlorophyll content was significant increased by Promalin treatment. Thus, shipping between 5 and $15^{\circ}C$ and Promalin dip pretreatment significantly decreased leaf chlorosis in cut 'Siberia' lilies.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the flower yield and quality of Lilium Oriental Hybrids as affected by planting date. In cut flower production experiments, effect of planting date and bulb source was studied in rain shelter houses with 30% shading. Four planting dates compared were May 15, June 5, June 25, and July 15. Bulbs used for cut flower production were either imported or produced domestically. The greatest cut flower yield and quality were obtained from bulbs planted either on May 15 or June 25. Bulbs planted on July 15 produced cut flowers of very poor quality and yield, due to high temperatures during the planting time. Therefore, for planting in July, means other than 30% shading have to be adapted to lower temperature during early growth stage. Although plants from imported bulbs had better growth and cut flower yield as compared to domestic bulbs, there was no significant difference.

  • Objective of this Research was to determine the influence of foliar application of $CaCl_2$ or $K_2SI_2O_5$ and soil application of $CaCO_3$ or $SiO_2$ on growth and cut flower quality of Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Wedding March'. To achieve this, $CaCl_2$ or $K_2SI_2O_5$ were applied at six leaf stage with the concentration of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2% and $CaCO_3$ or $SiO_2$ were applied as basal fertilization with the amount of 100, 200, 400kg per 10a or 50, 100, 200, 400kg per 10a respectively. Plant material was used Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Wedding March'. Among calcium chloride($CaCl_2$) and calcium carbonate($CaCO_3$), calcium chloride foliar application was more effective than calcium carbonate with basal fertilization to growth of common calla 'Wedding March'. In the 0.1% solution foliar application of calcium chloride, plant height, leaf length and length of cut-flower was more longer than control. Length of leaf petiole was more longer and leaf fresh weight was more heavier than control. The degree of petiole hardness was more effective in the 0.1% solution calcium chloride foliar application than any other treatment. In the silicate fertilization treatment, plant height of 50kg per 10a treatment was most highest as 73.9cm. also its length of leaf petiole and leaf fresh weight was more effective than any other treatment. The hardness of petiole was better in the 50kg per 10a silicate fertilizer treatment. The cell shape of leaf petiole was round and tissue was regular in the treatment of 0.1% calcium chloride and 50kg per 10a silicate fertilizer but the cell of control was irregular round type. Macro element content of calcium was more amount in the treatment of silicate 50kg per 10a basal fertilization. The infected ratio of Erwinia was no relation with lime and silicate fertilizer treatment. Lime fertilizer treatment is effective for growth and flowering of Calla than silicate fertilizer and the suitable concentration was 0.1%.

  • This experiment was conducted to improve postharvest quality and extended vase life of Korean native Aster koraiensis Nakai for use as cut flowers. Aster koraiensis Nakai cut flowers were treated with various pretreatment and holding solution. Postharvest pretreatment with 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA and 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ citric acid for 16 hours extended vase life of cut Aster koraiensis Nakai flowers by 1.4 times as compared with the control (distilled water). Holding solution of 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA and 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;GA_3$ extended vase life of cut Aster koraiensis Nakai flowers by1.6 and 1.7 times as compared with control (distilled water). Aster koraiensis Nakai.flowers held in this preservative solution increased fresh weight and were maintained positive water balance for a long vase period. It was suggested that the vase life of cut Aster koraiensis Nakai flowers was closely related to fresh weight and water balance of the cut flower.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of shading materials (aluminum specific-shading screen and polypropylene non-woven fabric) and shading ratio (50% and 70%) on climatic changes, cut-flower quality, and yield of spray rose cultivars for export during high temperature periods. The daily cumulative solar radiations were higher with the aluminum specific-shading screen, especially with 50% shading compared to polypropylene non-woven fabric. Air temperature and root zone temperature within rockwool media greatly decreased with the aluminum specific-shading screen, but relative air humidity was not different among shading methods. Chlorophyll contents (SPAD values) were slightly higher with aluminum-specific shading screen than with polypropylene non-woven fabric, and were higher with 50% than with 70% aluminum specific-shading screen. Except for 'Lovely Lydia', marketable and exportable yields of all cultivars were higher with 50% than with 70% aluminum shading treatment. In addition, flowers talk length, stem diameter, number of node and 7ea-leaflet, and floret number tended to be better with aluminum specific-shading screen. Flower stalk length was higher with 70% than with 50% aluminum shading treatment. Chromaticity of petals slightly increased, and vase life was 0.5-2.5 days longer for each cultivar with aluminum specific-shading screen than with polypropylene non-woven fabric.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of soil moisture content on cut flower quality of Gypsophila paniculata L. 'Bristol Fairy' in spring and autumn cultivations. The soil moisture potential (SMP) set point for irrigation was either -3.2 or -10.0kPa in the vegetative growth stage, and -10.0, -31.6, or -79.4kPa after the budding stage. When soil moisture reached at each set SMP point, 10 mm water was drip-irrigated. Tendency of flowering was earlier as SMP set point was lower in both vegetative growth and after budding stages. No other flower characteristics were found among other treatments. In both spring and autumn cultivations, as SMP set point was lower, the low primary branch length and upper internode length were decreased, the stem firmness was increased, and curvature of cut flower stem was decreased. Especially, in autumn, the higher the SMP set point, the higher the low primary branch than the apex, thus the paniculate inflorescence was deeply destroyed. Yield in spring cultivation was not significantly different among treatments, while that in autumn cultivation increased as the lower the SMP value. It is thought that optimal imgation points during vegetative growth and after budding stages to produce high quality cut flowers are -10.0 and -79.4kPa, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to observe the characteristics of mineral nutrient uptake of single-node cutting rose 'Versilla' and to determine optimal nutrient solution control method for soilless culture of 'Versilla' in a closed hydroponic system. Nutrient solution was managed by five different control methods: macro- and micro-element control in aeroponic system (M&M), macroelement control in aeroponic system (M), nutrient solution supplement in aeroponic system (S); electrical conductivity (EC) control in aeroponic system(EC-A); EC control in deep flow technique system(EC-D). The concentration of $NO_3$-N exceeds optimal range whereas P and Mg decreased at the later stage of plant growth with the EC control method, EC-A and EC-D. The overall mineral nutrient content increased with S. On the other hand the nutrient content at the root environment was maintained optimal with M&M and M. The nutrient solution control methods had significantly effect on the cut-flower quality. In the M&M and M, flower length, fresh weight and root activity were higher than those with the other mineral nutrients control methods. The maximal efficiency of photochemistry (Fv/Fm) was higher for M&M, M and S than that with EC-A and EC-D. Based on the above results, it is highly recommended to control nutrient solution by mineral nutrient control methods (M&M and M) in a closed hydroponic system for single-node cutting rose, 'Versillia'.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the effect of changes in the light environment caused by the daylight disturbance on the growth, flowering, and cut flower quality of spray chrysanthemums. The spray chrysanthemum 'Yellow Cap' and 'Pitch PangPang' cultivars for cut flowers were artificially shaded to interfere with 66% of sunlight compared to the non-shading, and then the growing and flowering characteristics, and cut flower yield were investigated accordingly. There was no significant difference in the cut flower yield per unit area between the shading and the non-shading treatments. However, the number of days to flowering was 72.1 days for the 'Yellow Cap' and 65.2 days for the 'Pitch PangPang', which were delayed by 14.1 and 8.9 days, respectively, compared to the non-shading light. In the shading treatment, the flower diameter and the number of flowers also decreased by 10% and 15%, and 30% and 28% for both 'Yellow Cap' and 'Pitch PangPang', respectively. The stem length also decreased by 10% and 20%, the stem diameter by 23% and 37%, and fresh weight by 32% and 33%, respectively. The shading treatment delayed the flowering of chrysanthemums and reduced the growth such as flower diameter, number of flowers, and the length and weight of cut flowers. Based on these results, the daylight disturbance by artificial buildings is expected to reduce the productivity and quality of cut flowers by limiting the light intensity needed for chrysanthemum growth, flower bud differentiation, and flower development. Therefore, further research is needed on the rate of decrease in yield and market value according to the degree of shading to relieve damage to chrysanthemum growers caused by the daylight disturbance.
