  • Linear cutting test is known to be very effective to determine machine parameters (i.e. thrust force and torque) and to estimate penetration rate of TBM and other operation conditions. Although the linear cutting test has significant advantages, the test is expensive and time-consuming because it requires large size specimen and high load capacity of the testing machine. Therefore, a few empirical prediction models (e.g. CSM, NTNU and QTBM) alternatively adopt laboratory index tests to estimate design parameters of TBM. This study discusses the estimation method of TBM machine parameters and disc cutter consumption using punch penetration test and Cerchar abrasion test of which the researches are rare. The cutter forces and cutter consumption can be estimated by the empirical models derived from the relationship between laboratory test result with field data and linear cutting test data. In addition, the estimation process was programmed through which the design parameters of TBM (e.g. thrust, torque, penetration rate, and cutter consumption) are automatically estimated using laboratory test results.

  • This paper presents a machining parameter selection approach using an evolutionary computation (EC). In order to perform a successful material cutting process, the engineer is to select suitable machining parameters. Until now, it has been mostly done by the handbook look-up or solving optimization equations which is inconvenient when not in handy. The main thrust of the paper is to provide a handy machining parameter selection approach. The EC is applied to rapidly find optimal machining parameters for the user\\`s specific machining conditions. The EC is basically a combination of genetic a1gorithm and microcanonical stochastic simulated annealing method. The approach is described in detail with an application example. The paper concludes with a discussion on the potential of the proposed approach.

  • Waterjet has been comprehensively used in urban areas owing to a suitable technique for cutting concrete and rock, and low noise and vibration. Recently, the abrasive waterjet technique has been adopted and applied by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute to demolish concrete plugging without disturbing and damaging In-situ Demonstration of Engineered Barrier System in the disposal research tunnel. In this study, the use of abrasive waterjet in the tunnel was evaluated for practical applicability and the existing cutting model was compared with the experimental results. As a variable for waterjet cutting, multi-cutting, water flow rate, abrasive flow rate, and standoff distance were selected for the diversity of analysis. As regarding the practical application, the waterjet facilitated path selection for cutting the concrete plugging and prevented additional disturbances in the periphery. The pump's noise at idling was 64.9 dB which is satisfied with the noise regulatory standard, but it exceeded the standard at ejection to air and target concrete because the experiment was performed in the tunnel space. The experimental result showed that the error between the predicted and measured cutting volume was 12~13% for the first cut and 16% for second cut. The standoff distance had a significant influence on the cutting depth and width, and the error tended to decrease with decrement of standoff distance.

  • The cutting mechanism of ultrasonic vibration machining is characterized as two phases, that is, an impact at the cutting edge and a reduction of cutting force due to non-contact interval between tool and workpiece. In this paper, in order to identify cutting dynamics of a system with ultrasonically vibrated cutting tool, an ARMA modeling is performed on experimental cutting force signals which have a dominant effect on cutting dynamics. The aim of this study is, through Dynamic Date System methodology, to find the inherent characteristics of an ultrasonic vibration cutting process by considering natural frequency and damping coefficient. Surface roughness and stability of cutting process under ultrasonic vibration are also considered

  • One of the most important technology in Factory Automation and Unmanned Automation is to construct the diagnostic system for manufacturing process. To improve the productivity in cutting process, the state of tools such as bite, drill, endmill should be monitored continuously. In this study, fuzzy logic was used to check the wear of drill in drilling process. The input variables to construct the fuzzy rules are cutting force and the rate of cutting force's change. The experiment was done with the fixed spindle speed and feed rate in cutting condition. The proposed algorithm is verified by comparing Fuzzy wear with real wear measured.

  • To overcome the limitation of conventional rock excavation methods, the excavation with abrasive waterjet has been actively developed. The abrasive waterjet excavation method has the effect of reducing blasting vibration and enhancing the excavation efficiency by forming a continuous free surface on the rock. However, the waterjet cutting performance varies with rock fracturing characteristics. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the cutting performance for various rocks in order to effectively utilize the waterjet excavation. In this study, cutting experiments with the high pressure waterjet system were performed for basalt and granite specimens. Water pressure, standoff distance, and traverse speed were determined as effective parameters for the abrasive waterjet cutting. The cutting depth and width of basalt specimens were analyzed to compare with granite results. The averaged cutting depth of basalt was shown in 41% deeper than granite; in addition, the averaged cutting width of basalt was formed by 18.5% narrower than granite. The results of this study are expected to be useful basic data for applying rock excavation site with low strength and high porosity such as basalt.

  • Laser cutting tests were conducted to investigate the laser cutting characteristics of solid woods such as 25mm-thick white oak(Quercus acutissima) and maple(Acer mono), and wood-based panels such as 15mm-thick medium density fiberboard and particleboard. Test variables were laser power, cutting speed, grain direction, and moisture content. Specific cutting energy was measured and the qualities of cut surface were estimated in constant laser power. Specific cutting energy of white oak was larger than that of maple, and specific cutting energy of medium density fiberboard was smaller than that of particleboard. For both white oak and maple, specific cutting energy of green wood was smaller than that of air-dried wood because weight loss of moisture evaporation in green wood was larger than that in air-dried wood. In laser-cut surface, wood cells were not deformed and damaged, but in circular saw-cut surface fibers were pushed out and cut, and wood cells were deformed severely. However, mechanical surface roughness of saw-cut surface was smoother than that of laser-cut surface because of the existence of undeformed cell cavity in laser-cut surface.

  • The optimum cutting condition for rake angle in turning was investigated in (6-4) Brass and Al alloy. Results of experiments in (6-4) Brass and Al alloy are as follow. Specific cutting resistance becames higher as the depth of cutting, feed or cutting velocity decreases at same rake angle and resistance appear low value 20.deg., 25.deg.(6-4)brass, 0.deg. 20.deg.(Al alloy). The optimum cutting condition for(6-4) Brass is depth of cutting 0.5mm, rake angle 25.deg., cutting velocity 80m/min, feed 0.1mm/rev and for Al alloy is depth of cutting 0.1mm, rake angle 0.deg., cutting velocity 200m/min, feed 0.5mm/rev. The rake angle for good roughness is 20.deg. at (6-4) Brass, and that for Al alloy is 15.deg. The roughness is influenced by feed and it has the lowest value at 0.1mm/rev and the cutting condition is influenced by rake angle only.

Test variables were laser power, cutting speed, grain direction, and moisture content. Cutting depths, kerf widths and the maximum cutting speed were measured. Cutting depths were increased as focus of laser beam was moving from above the workpiece to on the surface of workpiece, and also to below the workpiece. Kerf widths were decreased as focus of laser beam was moving from above the workpiece to on the surface of workpiece, but were increased as focus of laser beam was moving from on the surface of workpiece to below the workpiece. Minimum kerf widths were obtained when focus of laser beam was positioned on the surface of workpiece. Cutting depths and kerf widths were decreased with increase in moisture content, and cutting depths and kerf widths of more dense white oak were smaller than those of maple. And also cutting depths and kerf widths of particleboard were smaller than those of medium density fiberboard.
