A study of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) was undertaken on Cretaceous granitic, volcanic and sedimentary rocks in the eastern region of the Yangsan fault, southeast Korea. A total of 542 independently oriented core samples collected form 77 sites were studied. The main magnetic mineral in granitic rocks is magnetite according to the magnitude of bulk susceptibility, high-temperature susceptibility variation and isothermal remanent magnetization. Both of magnetic lineation and foliation with NE-SW trends are revealed in the granitic rocks, while volcanic rocks show scattered directions and sedimentary rocks show only load foliation parallel to the bedding planes. The following evidences read to the conclusion that both magnetic fabrics in the granitic rocks have been obtained by a tectonic stress before full solidification of the magma: (i) A fully hardened granitic rocks would get hardly any fabric, (ii) Difference of the magnetic fabric trends with those of the geological structures in the granitic rocks themselves formed by brittle deformation after solidification (e.g. patterns of small-faults and joints), (iii) Kinking of biotite and undulose extinction in quartz observed under the polarizing microscope, (iv) Discordance of magnetic fabrics in the granitic rocks with those in the surrounding rocks. The NE-SW trend of the magnetic foliations suggests a NW-SE compressive stress of nearly contemporaneous with the emplacement of the granitic rocks. The compression should have caused a sinistral strike-slip movement of the Yangsan Fault considering the trend of the latter. As the age of the granitic rocks in the study area is reported to be around $60\sim70$ Ma, it is concluded that the Yangsan fault did the sinistral strike-slip movement during this time (L. Cretaceous Maastrichtian - Cenozoic Paleocene).

This study was conducted to interpret the landscape of Songge Byeoleop(Korean villa) garden at Jogyedong, Bukhansan near Seoul which was built in the mid 17C. to restore through the literature reviews and field surveys. The results were as follows; Songge Byeoleop garden was a royal villa, constructed at King Injo24(1646) of Joseon dynasty by prince Inpyeong(麟坪大君), Lee, Yo(李?, 1622~1658), the third son of King Injo who was a brother of King Hyojong. It was a royal villa, Seokyang-lu under Mt. Taracsan of Gyendeokbang, about 7km away in the straight line from main building. It was considered that the building system was a very gorgeous with timber coloring because of owner's special situation who was called the great prince. The place of Songge Byeoleop identity and key landscape of the place were consisted with Gucheon waterfall and the sound of the water with multi-layered waterfall which might be comparable to the waterfall of Yeosan in China. After the destruction of the building, the place was used for the royal tomb quarry, but there was a mark stone for forbidden quarry. The Inner part of Songge Beoleop, centered with Jogedongcheon, Chogye-dong, composted beautifully with the natural sceneries of Gucheon waterfall, Handam and Changbeok, and artificial structures, such as Bihong-bridge, Boheogak, Yeonghyudang and Gyedang. In addition, the existing Chinese characters, 'Songge Beoleop' and 'Gucheoneunpog' carved in the rocks are literary languages and place markings symbolizing with the contrast of the different forests and territories. They gave the names of scenery to the rock and gave meaning to them. Particularly, Gucheon waterfall which served as a visual terminal point, is a cascade type with multi-staged waterfall. and the lower part shows the topographical characteristics of the Horse Bowl-shaped jointed with port-holes. On the other hand, the outer part is divided into the spaces for the main entrance gate, a hanging bridge character, a bridge connecting the inside and the outside, and Yeonghyudang part for the purpose of living. Also in the Boheogak area, dual view frame structures are made to allow the view of the four sides including the width and the perimeter of the villa. In addition, at the view point in Bihong-bridge, the Gucheon water fall divides between the sacred and profane, and crosses the Bihong-bridge and climbs to the subterranean level.

The Gogunsan Archipelago is composed of two island groups; the first group includes Mal-do, Myeong-do, Gwangdae-do, and Bangchuk-do islands consisting of Neoproterozoic rocks, and the second group includes Yami-do, Sinsi-do, Muneo-do, Jangja-do, and Seonyu-do islands consisting of Cretaceous rocks. The first group mainly consists of the Bangchuk formation which can be divided into two layers; the lower layer was more deformed than the upper layer. The former was intruded by mafic and felsic volcanic rocks formed in the volcanic arc tectonic setting 930-890 Ma and the latter was deposited ca. 825-800 Ma. In these islands, large scale folds with east-west fold axes were beautifully formed; the Maldo island fold was designated as natural monument and large scale beautiful chevron fold was developed on the Gwangdae-do island. In addition, there are unique zebra-shaped outcrop formed by a mixing of basic and acidic magma and Independent Gate shaped outcrop formed by coastal erosion. On the other hand, the Yami-do, Sinsi-do, Muneo-do, Jangja-do and Seonyu-do islands consist of 92-91Ma Cretaceous volcanic rocks and, in Sinsi-do island, the Nanshan formation deposited ca. 92 Ma. These Cretaceous volcanic rocks formed by melting of the continental crust by the heat supplied from the uplifting mantle due to the extension caused by a retreat of subducting ocean slab. Yami-do and Sinsi-do islands are composed of rhyolite. In Yami-do island, bands with vertical joint formed by cooling of the bottom part of the lava, are shown. In Sinsi-do island, large-scale vertical joints formed by cooling of lava flow, were developed. The Jangja-bong of Jangja-do island and Mangju-bong of Seonyu-do island are composed of brecciated rhyolite and formed a ring shaped archipelago contributing to the development of marine culture by providing natural harbor condition. They also provide beautiful views including 'Seonyu 8 views' along with other islands. As mentioned above, the Gogunsan archipelago is rich in geoheritages and associated cultural and historical resources, making it worth as a National Geopark.

Since fractures may serve as major conduits of groundwater flow in crystalline rocks, characterization of conductive fractures is especially important for interpretation of flow system. In this study, characterization of fractures to investigate hydraulically conductive fractures in gneisses at an abandoned mine area was performed. The orientation, width, length, movement sense, infilling materials, spacing, aperture, roughness of both joints and faults and intersection and connectivity to other joints were measured on outcrops. In addition, characteristics of subsurface fractures were examined by core logging in five boreholes, of which the orientations were acquired by acoustic televiewer logging from three boreholes. The dominant fracture sets were grouped from outcrops; GSet 1: N50-82$^{\circ}$E/55-90$^{\circ}$SE, GSet 2: N2-8$^{\circ}$E/56-86$^{\circ}$SE, GSet 3: N46-72$^{\circ}$W/60-85$^{\circ}$NE, GSet 4:Nl2-38$^{\circ}$W/15-40$^{\circ}$SW and from subsurface; HSet 1: N50-90$^{\circ}$E/55-90$^{\circ}$SE, HSet 2: N10-30$^{\circ}$E/50-70$^{\circ}$SE, HSet 3: N20-60$^{\circ}$W/50-80$^{\circ}$NE, HSet 4: N10-50$^{\circ}$E/$\leq$40$^{\circ}$NW. Among them, GSet 1, GSet 3 and HSet 1, HSet 3 are the most intensely developed fracture sets in the study area. The mean fracture spacings of HSet 1 are 30-47cm and code 1 fractures, such as faults and open fractures, comprise 21.0-42.9 percent of the whole fractures in each borehole. HSet 3 shows the mean fracture spacings of 55-57cm and the ratio of code 1 fractures is 15.4-26.9 percent. In spite of the mean fracture spacing of 239cm, code 1 fractures of HSet 4 have the highest ratio of 54.5 percent. From the fact that faults or open fractures have high hydraulic conductivity, it can be inferred that the three fracture sets of N55-85$^{\circ}$E/50-80$^{\circ}$SE, N20-60$^{\circ}$W/50-75$^{\circ}$NE and N10-30$^{\circ}$E/$\leq$30$^{\circ}$NW from a fracture system of relatively high conductivity. It is indirectly verified with geophysical loggings and constant injection tests performed in the boreholes.
The generalized Hoek-Brown (H-B) function provides a unique failure condition for a jointed rock mass, in which the strength parameters of rock mass are deduced from the intact values by use of the GSI value. Since it is actually the only failure criterion which accounts for the rock mass conditions in a systematic manner, the generalized H-B criterion finds many applications to the various rock engineering projects. Its nonlinear character, however, limits more active usage of this criterion. Accordingly, many attempts have been made to understand the generalized H-B condition in the framework of the M-C function. This study presents the closed-form expression relating the tangential cohesion to the tangential friction angle, which is derived by the non-dimensional stress transformation of the generalized H-B criterion. By use of the derived equation, it is investigated how the relationship between the tangential cohesion and friction angle of the generalized H-B criterion varies with the quality of rock masses. When only the variation of GSI value is considered, it is found that the tangential friction angle decreases with the increase of GSI, while the tangential cohesion increases with GSI value.
Rock mass having discontinuous plane almost appear roughness which have a great effect on shear strength. Rocks of studied object choose granites (15 samples), gneisses (7 samples), and andesites (1 sample). The purpose of this study was to clarify shear strength of discontinuous planes as value of shear strength angle (${\Phi}_p$), critical stress of roughness (${\sigma}_r$) and shear failure strength (${\tau}_o$). 1. Roughness decrease from ${\Phi}_i=38.03^{\circ}$ to $33.21^{\circ}$ that is, friction angle has the highest value at first stage and has the lowest value at the last stage. 2. Critical angle of roughness distribution within $45^{\circ}$ (test max. $angle=43^{\circ}$), JRC(Joint Roughness Coefficient) is less than 14 and lies distribution range of boundary is following: $JRC=-4.63Ln{\sigma}n+5.63$. 3. When the roughness critical stress(${\sigma}_T) is from 0.1 to 3 .56Mpa, shear failure strength of roughness (${\tau}_o$) is from 0.01 to 0.46Mpa, shear strength(${\tau}$) of discontinuous plane is from 3.65 to 39.11 Mpa. If loading is higher than these values, collapse and sliding will occur on the rock mass.
Petrographical and petrochemical analyses for late Miocene basalts in Goseong-gun area. Gangwon province, were carried out to interpret the characteristics and the origin of magma. The basaltic rocks occurred as plug-dome in the summit of several small mountain and developed columnar jointing with pyroxene-megacryst bearing porphyritic texture. And the basalt contains xenoliths of biotite granite (basement rocks), gabbro (lower crustal origin) and Iherzolite(upper mantle origin). The basalts belong to the alkaline basalt field in TAS diagram and partly belong to picrobasalt and trachybasalt field. On the tectonomagmatic discrimination diagram f3r basalt in the Goseong-gun area. they fall into the fields for the within plate and oceanic island basalt. The characteristics of trace elements and REEs shows that primary magma for the basalt magma would have been derived from partial melting of garnet-peridotite mantle. This late Miocene basalt volcanism is related to the hot spot within the palte.
To verify the characteristics of groundwater inflow accompanied by the tunnel excavation, the flow rate was measured before and after primary grouting. The relationship between the flow rate and fracture system was also analyzed. The initial flow rate was estimated as 120,990 m$^3$/day through six zones, which were characterized by a large amount of inflow before the primary grouting. After the primary grouting, although considerable amount of inflow was still recognized at the six zones, the flow rate was greatly reduced as 42,844 m$^3$/day. However, great recovery of water levels was not observed. Groundwater flow into the tunnel by excavation of the tunnel is mainly controlled by the fracture system that include faults and joints developed in the host rocks. Four sets of discontinuities affecting on the network of grondwater inflow in the study area were identified as follows: N60-85$^{\circ}C$ W.25$^{\circ}$SW/80$^{\circ}$SW(TSet 1), N40-50$^{\circ}$E.85$^{\circ}$SE/85$^{\circ}$NE(TSet 2), N10-20$^{\circ}$E.85$^{\circ}$SE(TSet 3), and N70-80$^{\circ}$E.80SE(TSet 4).

Weathered foliation could act as a critical failure plane because this type of plane tend to have low roughness and long extensions. A big constructed slope at $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ road construction site was failed due to the block movement along a fault zone which is parallel to foliation. Tectonic activity reactivated a fault zone parallel to foliation, and the fault clay within the shear zone metamorphosed retrogressively to chrolite. The failed block moved when the block weigh lost the balancing with the resisting force of the retrogressively metamorphosed chrolite. Evaluating the three dimensional distribution of the foliation was critical for establishing a plan for the stabilization of the slope. For this purpose, 10 boreholes were drilled as a lattice distribution, and the BIPS analyses are performed at each boreholes. The fractures measured in the boreholes are projected into 15 cross sections and their distributions are analysed, using Fracjection software. The projection analyse show that the strike of the foliation gets dipper towards left side of the slope. This geometry indicates that there are more failure block geometry at left side of the slope. Potential failure planes are searched using the projection method, and these information are provided for further support design.
Sulawesi island, as a global producer of nickel resources, is leading the rapid growth of nickel industry of Indonesia. Nickel laterite deposits in Sulawesi was formed by lateritization of the world-scale East Sulawesi Ophiolite (ESO) under the active tectonic setting and tropical rainforest climate. In this paper, exploration cases for nickel laterite deposits in five regions of Sulawesi are reported. Regional characteristics on nickel laterite deposits in Sulawesi are understood based on various exploration activities such as outcrop, trench and pit survey, petrological observation, geochemical analysis, and interpretation of drilling data, etc.. In the northeastern part of 'Southeast-Arm', which is a strategic location for nickel industry of Indonesia, ESO is extensively exposed to the surface. In the Morombo and Morowali regions, typical high-grade saprolite-type orebodies with a thickness of 10 to 20 m occur. The cases showed that topographic relief tends to regulate Ni-grade distribution and orebody thickness, and that high grade intervals tend to occur in places where joints and garnierite veins are dense. In the Tinanggea and South Palangga regions in the southern part of the Southeast-Arm, overburden composed of Neogene to Quaternary deposits is a major factor affecting the preservation and profitability of nickel laterite deposits. Despite the overburden, high-grade saprolite-type orebodies composed of Ni-bearing serpentine with garnierite veins occur in a thickness of around 10 m to secure economic feasibility. In contrast, in the Ampana region in the northern part of 'East-Arm', low-grade nickel laterite deposits with immature laterite profile was identified, which is thought to be the result of active denudation due to tectonic uplift. Exploration cases in this paper will help to understand characteristics and controlling factors on nickel laterite deposits in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
